FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
At this week’s Assembly, Janene Thompson recog-
nised those students who have established a terrific
home-reading routine and have read for 50 or 75
nights already this year. A considerable portion of
the student population were recognised, which was
fantastic to see. We continue to encourage students
to read at home as often as possible, as we know
this can have a significant impact on their reading
development, not to mention development in other
key areas.
We look forward to seeing families at our Science
Night tonight! Our Science Teacher, Bruce Stevens,
along with Year 4 Teacher, Penee Laughlin have
been busy organising fun and engaging activities for
tonight. Janene Thompson has also helped with the
organisation of this special event. Fun for the whole
family!
Mothers and significant others are welcome to
come and have lunch at school this Friday 11th for
Mothers’ Day – we thank you for the wonderful role
you play in the lives of our students.
Enjoy the week.

AUSTRALIAN EARLY DEVELOPMENT CENSUS
Playing our part to build a national picture of
child health
In early 2018, our school, along with thousands of others across the country will begin preparations for the fourth
Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).
The AEDC measures five key areas of development in
children during their first year of full-time school to build a
national picture of health and wellbeing. Since 2009, the
census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and target support for children
and families.
Teachers are trained to assess each child and answer
questions. Children don’t need to be present so no class
time is missed, and parents/carers don’t need to supply
schools with any new information for the census. Teachers’
individual assessments are then analysed by the AEDC and
reported as anonymous groups of children in the final
report. In other communities across the country, census results
have helped communities to plan new playgrounds and parental services; schools are seeing improved student
performance through new literacy programmes; and governments are using the results as evidence to develop
better policies for children.
Teachers have also noticed practical benefits in the
classroom. Some said in previous years that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of
individual children and the class as a whole. Others
reported that the census results are useful in planning for
transitions to Year 1 and for developing class programs.
Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t
need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.
To find out more about the census and how communities
are using the data to help children and families visit the
AEDC website: www.aedc.gov.au.
All prep students will be given a letter early next week.

This term we are focusing on Character. Character is the aspects of a person’s personality that makes them unique. This week we are learning about character strengths. Character strengths are the type of person you are: the way you think, feel, and behave. Everyone has strengths. There are some great videos online which can help us to un-derstand values. This one is about honesty. https://www.passiton.com/inspirational-stories-tv-spots/112-purse Some strengths are: curiosity, love, forgiveness and humour.

VISITING PERFORMANCE PLANET RHYTHM
Tuesday 29 May, $5 per student
Planet Rhythm is a large & loud production.
The students will be amazed at the
magnificent collection of world drums & percussion
instruments sourced from the four corners of the
globe. Guided on a musically evolutionary journey, the
children will gain an insight into how rhythm
& instruments originated. They will also begin to
understand & appreciate the significance of drumming on
many cultures throughout the ages. Most importantly,
the workshops are all about the children; in front of their
peers, they take the stage to become the 'Stars' of their
own show.

ATTITUDE TO SCHOOL SURVEY That time of year again where:
WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK!
We value student voice as a means to improving student
engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction.
We are conducting the annual survey with students from
Year 4-6 from Monday 7 May to Monday 28 May.
The Attitudes to School Survey is offered by the
Department of Education and Training to assist schools in
gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and
experience of school. Our school will use the survey results
to plan programs and activities to improve your child's
schooling experience.
The survey takes 20 minutes to complete and occurs during
your child's class time. Each child will be provided with a
unique login. Confidentiality and anonymity of your child’s
responses is protected at all times through a purpose built,
secure, online survey tool.
The survey results will be reported back to the school
before the end of term 2. All survey data reports are
available for groups of students, no individual student can
be identified. The survey results are shared to parents
through the newsletter and made public through the
school annual reporting.
Last year we used the survey results to plan and resource
our wellbeing and teaching and learning goals in our
Annual Implementation Plan. Staff action teams, staff
training, respectful relationships lessons across the school,
improved lunchtime activity choices including the Ga Ga pit
and an ongoing focus on quality instruction are all
examples of how the survey data helps us make Swan Hill
Primary a quality educational setting.
