From the Assistant Principal’s desk….

Last Thursday we were all blessed with a beautiful winters day at Barden Park for the annual School Athletics Carnival. The day was a great success with all of the students participating and showing great sportsmanship throughout the day. Thank you to Miss Bolton and Mrs Sampson who coordinated the events and ran the con-trol room, great job ladies. Well done to the St John’s Primary School band that competed last Wednesday and were awarded 2nd place. Great work all of you and big thank you to Mrs Lindsay and Mrs Clifford for helping to coordinate.

Fantastic effort from Kindergarten in the Schools Choral groups section to be highly commended whilst competing against older students in year 1 & 2. Thank you Mrs King and Mrs Brice, excellent result.

This week we have dance groups and the string ensemble going to the eisteddfod—good luck everybody.

Sunday June the 9th was Pentecost Sunday. The gospel tells us that on the day of the Pentecost Jesus’ Disciples were huddled together in fear in what had become very uncertain times for them as friends and followers of Jesus. On the Pentecost the coming of the Holy Spirit transformed the disciples, they revered God before them and accepted God within them giving them the courage to face the uncertain world and proclaim the word of

God to all and among all the nations of the earth.

Religious Education News: Term 2, Week 7

Masses with Fr Greg: This Wednesday our Years 4 and 5 classes will celebrate Mass with Fr

Greg. Year 5 @ 10:20 and Year 4 @ 11:30. Parents, you are more than welcome to celebrate

with your children. Please save these times on your calendar if you would like to attend the

Mass.

Catholic Studies Visits with St. John's College: Last week our Kindergarten classes were fortunate to be

led by very capable SJC Catholic Studies students and their teacher Mrs Jacinta New in an interesting ses-

sion on Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy and St John the Baptist De La Salle and the La Sallean

Brothers. This session was designed to inform our students about both SJC and SJP celebrating their semi-

centenary years this year. (See last week’s newsletter for more information). Kinder thoroughly enjoyed

their visit to the College’s newly established reflection spaces that have been dedicated to Catherine

McAuley and St John the Baptist. Next week our Year 1 class will benefit from this session. A big thankyou

to Mrs New for the effort and dedication towards the very informative and productive nature of these

visits.

First Holy Communion Enrolment Weekends: For all parents of our Year 3 students who will receive the

Sacrament of First Holy Communion this year, please ensure you have penciled in

the following dates to attend an enrolment Mass at St. Brigid’s: 22nd and 23rd

June OR 29th and 30th June. More details regarding First Holy Communion will

be emailed to you by Rosie Hosking: St Brigid’s Parish Sacramental Coordinator.

Year 6 RE Test: Over recent years, our Year 6 students have sat a Religious

Education Assessment based on a Sydney developed program. This year, our Diocese decided that we will no

longer be involved in the Sydney RE Test however the Diocesan Catholic Education Council recommended and

endorsed the decision that Catholic Education Diocese of Bathurst (CEDB) Staff develop our own test. As

such, over the past few months, the CEDB, with a small group of RECs, worked to develop a bank of questions

that will best suit our diocesan context and will be administered via google forms which students will com-

plete on their Chromebooks. The questions will no longer include large amounts of text but rather be more

focused at assessing students' religious knowledge across the strands of our curriculum. Parents, please be

assured that this test will be based on the curriculum that is being taught here at St. John’s Primary

School. There will be no need to study for this test. Please be aware that the test will take place on

Tuesday 18th June.

Take care,

Paula Clifford

St. John’s Primary School Vinnies Winter Appeal 2019

Over the next 4 weeks SJP will be coordinating an appeal for our local St Vincent de Paul Store.

And yes... we could take the easy option and ask for a gold coin donation, however due to so many coin donations over the past weeks and last term’s ex-ceptional Project Compassion fundraiser we have decided to donate in a different way.

Recently I have spoken to Carole O’Connor from Vinnies and Carole has advised that during the winter, they are ALWAYS seeking donations of goods. Goods that are par-ticularly sought after are:

Blankets

Shoes and slippers

Jackets

Scarfs

Beanies

Gloves

Hoodies

Basic kitchen utensils eg saucepans for heating food during cold winter months

I am confident that most households within the SJP community would be able to contribute at least 1 item from the above list. If we were able to do that, we would be donating almost 300 items.

Below are some relevant details from the St. Vincent de Paul Society website:

“Decided it’s time to declutter? Or the kids have outgrown their clothes but they’re still in excellent condition? By donating your pre-loved items to Vinnies they will get a new life, support Australians doing it tough and reduce landfill and the impact on the envi-

ronment. Vinnies shops need your good quality items to help fund Vinnies programs across the country that support 1.3 million vulnerable Australians each year.

What can I donate?: When considering whether something can be donated to Vinnies, our rule of thumb is if you’d give it to a friend, then it’s ok to give to Vinnies. What can’t I donate?: It takes a lot of money and volunteer hours for the thousands of tonnes of items we get that aren’t sellable. Please do not donate any of the following: Ripped, torn, soiled or stained clothing/blankets, cracked or broken homewares”

So how can you donate your items? Please send all items to Mrs Clifford’s classroom (first room in the blue block) with your child. Items will then be pooled together and a drop off to Vinnies organised. Please ensure your items have been donated by: 28th June (Friday, Week 9) AND please can I stress that all items are in good condition. Many thanks for your support and generosity, Paula Clifford Religious Education Coordinator

Anthony Riley from the NSW AECG local office. Wiradjuri is the language of the Aboriginal people local to

our Dubbo and surrounding areas. It was exciting for everyone to start this new venture teaching language

to our students and our aim at St John’s Primary is to have all students participate in these language lessons

in the near future.

All classes learnt how to say “Good Day” and introduce themselves. Kinder learnt some numbers and Year 6

will learn how to do an Acknowledgement to Country in language!
