Term 2, Week 5 Wednesday 30 May 2018 Kia ora families We had a very successful week last week. We had four teams at the EPro8 technology at Opawa School. One of our teams finished first, and the others in the top half of the field. This is quite amazing as this is the second year in a row for Waitākiri School to win this title. Our Zone Cross Country team performed with great heart last Wednesday. I was so proud of all our runners. We have a number of students through to the Canterbury event, please see below in the newsletter for more details. You would have noticed our smart new fence around the front of our school. It is due to be completed in approx. one weeks’ time. The reason for the fence is student health and safety. It means that students will not be able to exit the school grounds easily. This also means some younger children will have trouble entering the school grounds if they arrive after school has started. If your child is going to be late, please inform the school office or escort them into the school grounds. We are very fortunate that QEIl is opening again at the end of the week. Our year 6 students had the opportunity for a free swim and hydroslide on Monday, they absolutely loved the experience. Congratulations to those students who have put their hands up and are playing winter sport for a Waitākiri team. All have made a really successful start to the winter season. Thank you for your ongoing support. REAL CHALLENGE

Many students have chosen to participate in this year’s World Vision 40 Hour Famine. They have been given booklets to bring home and collect sponsorship, and then complete the famine from 8 – 10 June (primary aged children can complete the 20 Hour Famine). Once they have completed the famine and collected their fundraising, please return the booklet AND the money to the drop box in the school foyer.

Below is some information about the famine this year:

Are you giving up food? Furniture? Technology? Talking? And can you go the distance?

This June 8-10 you’re invited to take up a 40 Hour Famine challenge and give up something you love while fundraising to make a difference to children who need it. Your fundraising will support children from South Sudan who have fled their homes because of famine, drought and conflict, with life-saving essentials like food and water as well as education and a safe place to live.

By signing up they are joining hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders from around the country who have participated in the event over the past 43 years and made real change for those who need it!

EPro8 Challenge Four teams were selected to represent Rangi Community in the Year 5 and 6 EPro8 inter-school science and technology competition, held at Opawa School. The teams had to compete against other schools to finish a variety of science and technology based challenges.

They had to work together to: build large sized structures solve practical problems engineer using pulleys, motors, gears, wheels and axles invent machines that can complete simple tasks undertake unusual and fun experiments. construct basic electronic circuits. solve interesting problems using practical maths

The children in the teams were: Lucas, Hunter, Helena, Sophie, Lincoln, Lashay, Ihaka and Malena from Korimako. The other two teams were Nova, Finn, Riley, Ben, JJ, Jed, Daisy and Taylor from Ruru.

Congratulations to the Wai-Z-Ones (Nova, Finn, Riley, Ben) who won the competition and will now compete in the Christchurch semi finals later in the year.

Mr Barker was impressed with how well the teams collaborated together.

THANK YOU LION FOUNDATION! Big thanks to The Lion Foundation for providing funding for ipads and covers for our school. The students love completing their learning on their new devices. Your support is very much appreciated.

PUBLIC HEALTH MESSAGE

Recently there was a case of the measles in a local Christchurch school. Public health and school staff worked together to limit the spread of this highly contagious illness in the school. The schools immunisation records were checked to identify high risk children (those not immunised or those with partial vaccination or incomplete records). There were many children who had to be excluded from school because written immunisation records had not been provided to the school.

This is a timely reminder to parents and caregivers that when enrolling your child, if they are immunised to please provide the school with their immunisation records.

If you have enrolled your child and you are unsure whether you have provided your child’s immunisation record or not, please contact Kim Hillson in the school office on 383 2736 or email [email protected] to check. We can quickly tell you if we still need their written immunisation record.

For children enrolling, we will be enforcing the need to provide up to date immunisation records before we can confirm the child’s enrolment. This is for the health and safety of all children at Waitākiri.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

SCHOOL DISCO TIME!!! We need volunteers. 1hour (plus a little hand to clean up between sessions) to sell drinks/food and glow sticks. 8 parents for each session will make this fun and easy AND ensure your children are SAFELY supervised until you come to take them home. It's been a couple of years since the last one, and to make this a success we need you. Simply put if we can't find the numbers to help then we won't be running that session. Please call/txt Carole-Ann and like us (Waitākiri School PTA) on Facebook to stay up to date with what's happening.

Chisnallwood Intermediate New School Uniform and School Logo The Chisnallwood Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the introduction of our new school uniform and school logo. The process of reaching this stage has taken over a year and we are confident that our new uniform will serve us well as a strong identity for who we are for the next 50 years.

Our new logo represents a more holistic view of a modern school representing our culture, our place & our aspiration for our tamariki. It also closely aligns with our school vision- “challenge the margins of time and explore what is beyond”. Again as an identity it will, we believe serve us well for the next 50 years and beyond.

The new uniform will be ready for our new Year 7 learners of 2019. Our Year 8 learners of 2019 will still be wearing their current uniform. We are lucky as an Intermediate School, our transition phase will only take a period of a year.

As it is with our current uniform, the Schooltex branch of the Warehouse group will be sourcing and selling our uniform.

Our new uniform and new school logo will be revealed at the Open Night – Wednesday July 4th from 6pm to 8pm.
