Term 2 Week 3

Phase 1 Return to School One Day per Week

Yesterday we began our planned phased return of students to school. It is delightful to see so many happy faces, and I’d like to extend my warmest welcome to all students who have returned to face-to-face learning this week. This week we are working on having approximately 25% of our student population attending school on any given day, to achieve this, it is important that students attend only on their allocated days.

Having said this we are making some changes to next weeks attendance. Starting next week (week4) in addition to having Year 11 and 12 back fulltime we are recommending K-2 also resume fulltime attendance. Students from Years 3- 10 will continue to follow the Phase 1 return to school plan (see over page for details). This phase follows an absolutely heroic effort to move to learning from home – an achievement which cannot be underestimated. I want to thank

our teachers, non-teaching staff and school leadership team for ensuring education continuity and wellbeing across the last five weeks, where most of our students were learning from home.

Please ensure you download our SkoolBag app where I will keep you up to date with information about HCS’s plans. Please do not hesitate to contact staff if you are uncertain about anything or what is expected. Stay Safe

SCHOOL NEWS Expectations to ensure health and safety of all students and staff

Safety is a priority during the COVID 19 pandemic. Students will be expected to behave in a responsible way, which recognises the importance of protecting the health of themselves, their peers, and staff, who are at higher risk of COVID 19.

Students will be expected to:

Stay home when unwell. Parents must not send students to school if they are feeling unwell. If a student is unwell during the school day, they will not be able to remain in Sick Bay. Parents will be expected to collect unwell students from school.

Bring all their own equipment, laptop or tablet with charger (as we have lent out most of our devices), pencil cases and anything else needed as there will be NO sharing amongst students or provided by staff.

Bring any and all paper copies of work both completed and not completed.

Assist in keeping classroom desks and school equipment clean as directed by the teacher

Engage in regular handwashing, especially before eating during breaks

Not share drinks or food – bring a water bottle as bubblers will be out of action and only bottle refill stations operating.

Remain 1.5 m apart from other students wherever possible. All efforts to maximise distance will be made and we appreciate parents’ cooperation through this phased return to school period.

Maintain social distancing when lining up for class and in the playground during breaks.

Cough or sneeze into their elbows if necessary to avoid spreading infection. Avoid touching face.

Use soap, sanitisers and other health items in a responsible manner – ideal to bring own hand sanitiser

Come directly to school each morning, and after school go directly home

If we all adhere to these guidelines we can be confident in this phased return to school. In addition, we have hand sanitisers in each classroom. Furthermore, additional cleaning is being undertaken with special attention to cleaning of desks, doorknobs, bathrooms and other surfaces.

Students who do not adhere to these health and safety requirements will be reminded of our expectations and the school discipline procedures will be implemented.

Transport

School buses will be running at normal times before and after school.

Uniform

Students are expected to wear their full school sports uniform on the day they attend. In the colder weather make sure you purchase items to keep you warm that are part of the uniform (eg school pants/tracksuits and jackets/jumpers – no hoodies, navy scarf & beanie).

Canteen

At this stage the canteen will remain closed Your Q and A Do I have to send my child back to school or do I have the

option to continue Home Learning

The government and Department of Education are encouraging students to return according to each school’s Phase 1 Plan. We believe it is in the interests of students’ learning and wellbeing. However, it is not compulsory. Please notify the school if you intend for them not to return on their allocated day. Can I change my child’s day of attending school? Generally NO, to enable us to manage a complex and challenging variation of routine. We have only approved a couple of requests based on very particular circumstances such as accessing learning support. Can you clarify how students learning will proceed? In Phase 1 all classes are still set up on online learning platforms. Whether at school or at home, students in Years K to 12 will be engaging in the online work in class time. On their designated day, students can seek clarification and assistance in class time directly from the teacher. I have been sending my child to school full time as an essential worker. Can I continue to do this? Yes – this has always been an option for essential workers or students who are vulnerable. What about camps, excursions, assemblies and band rehearsals? At this stage everything additional to classroom teaching and learning is on hold.
