This term we welcome back Ms Ami Russ in the role of Adnyamathanha teacher and as part of the Aboriginal Educaon Team. Ami will be working closely with Leaha Coulthard and Aune Mona Jackson to deliver the Adnaymathanha program across the school from Tuesday to Thursdays. Aendance Being present at school every day is important to learning. We know from research that frequent absences and lateness to school can take a toll on a student’s progress, causing them to struggle throughout their schooling years and in some cases drop out of school. Already, in the first two weeks of this term, we have noced a number of students arriving late as well as a number of absences. We understand your child may be sick and there are somemes family emergencies however, a regular paern of absence tells us your child is missing school for other reasons. For us to make a difference in your child’s learning, students need to be on me and aending school every day. If this applies to your children we encourage you to role model as much as possible to ensure your children come regularly and on me to school to assist with their success in the future. Changes to Preschool This term has begun with excing changes to our preschool and Early Years wet area. The preschool eang area has moved into the preschool classroom which has allowed the wet area to be transformed into a visual arts space. This space will be ulised by all classrooms in the teaching block. The preschool classroom area has also been decluered and opened up, allowing children to move between indoor and outdoor areas easily. If you visit the preschool you will also noce children playing with real world materials such as glass, wood and ceramics, along with materials that are open-ended”. The intenon is to promote curiosity and engage children in play where they use creavity, innovaon to design, plan and build things that they are interested in. Lifelong skills such as problem-solving, thinking crically, developing independence, taking risks and persevering at tasks will be developed as children control the direcon of their learning. The purpose is to empower children with endless ways to discover and express themselves. Opportunies will be provided for children to parcipate in rich mathemacal learning and literacy experiences, however looking very different from what you may be used to seeing in the preschool. NAPLAN Next week is NAPLAN for students in Year 3, 5 & 7. If you have children in these year levels the best way to prepare your children is to reassure them that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day. It is also important to ensure that they have a good night sleep ready to tackle the day ahead. Uniform This term students are not required to wear their hats whilst playing outside however we encourage students to keep their hats in a safe place in case they are required to wear on an excursion or if they are out in the yard for an extended period of me. Remember with the cooler weather students need to be wearing the school hooded jacket or windcheater. Students may choose to wear a black or white long sleeved top underneath their t-shirts. These can be purchased from Big W or Target. If your child has misplaced their school jacket please feel free to visit the Aboriginal Educaon Room as we have a number in lost property. NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS ON THESE DATES

Dear Families,

Welcome Back! This term we welcome back Ms Ami Russ in the role of Adnyamathanha teacher and as part of the Aboriginal Education Team. Ami will be working closely with Leaha Coulthard and Auntie Mona Jackson to deliver the Adnaymathanha program across the school from Tuesday to Thursdays.

Attendance Being present at school every day is important to learning. We know from research that frequent absences and lateness to school can take a toll on a student’s progress, causing them to struggle throughout their schooling years and in some cases drop out of school. Already, in the first two weeks of this term, we have noticed a number of students arriving late as well as a number of absences. We understand your child may be sick and there are sometimes family emergencies however, a regular pattern of absence tells us your child is missing school for other reasons. For us to make a difference in your child’s learning, students need to be on time and attending school every day. If this applies to your children we encourage you to role model as much as possible to ensure your children come regularly and on time to school to assist with their success in the future.

Changes to Preschool This term has begun with exciting changes to our preschool and Early Years wet area. The preschool eating area has moved into the preschool classroom which has allowed the wet area to be transformed into a visual arts space. This space will be utilised by all classrooms in the teaching block. The preschool classroom area has also been decluttered and opened up, allowing children to move between indoor and outdoor areas easily. If you visit the preschool you will also notice children playing with real world materials such as glass, wood and ceramics, along with materials that are “open-ended”. The intention is to promote curiosity and engage children in play where they use creativity, innovation to design, plan and build things that they are interested in. Lifelong skills such as problem-solving, thinking critically, developing independence, taking risks and persevering at tasks will be developed as children control the direction of their learning. The purpose is to empower children with endless ways to discover and express themselves. Opportunities will be provided for children to participate in rich mathematical learning and literacy experiences, however looking very different from what you may be used to seeing in the preschool.

Uniform This term students are not required to wear their hats whilst playing outside however we encourage students to keep their hats in a safe place in case they are required to wear on an excursion or if they are out in the yard for an extended period of time. Remember with the cooler weather students need to be wearing the school hooded jacket or windcheater. Students may choose to wear a black or white long sleeved top underneath their t-shirts. These can be purchased from Big W or Target. If your child has misplaced their school jacket please feel free to visit the Aboriginal Education Room as we have a number in lost property.

From the Impact Coach…

NAPLaN

Dear Families,

As you may be aware, NAPLaN (National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy) will be starting again

soon. This is a long week of assessments for our students in Year 3, 5 and 7. There is often a lot of emphasis on

NAPLaN in the news and through the media, but we wanted our students and families to know and remember…

This test does not assess all of which makes your child unique and exceptional!

The people who score these tests do not know that some of our students like to sing, are good at drawing, or

can teach others how to use a computer program. They have not seen the way some of our students shine in

their chosen sports, representing our State, or that some of our students can speak confidently in a second

language.

The assessors do not know that some of our students may help Mum and Dad, or look after little brothers,

sisters or cousins. They do not measure how caring, thoughtful or kind your child is, or that they may try their

best everyday. These attributes cannot be tested.

The scores they get from this test, will tell you how they did on that day, but they will not tell you everthing.

They can’t tell you that your child has improved on something they once found difficult. And they cannot tell

your children how amazingly special they are.

Please encourage your children to come to school to do their very best for the NAPLaN Test, but please

remember, there is no one way to ‘test’ all of the wonderful things that make your child who they are.

This term, Miss Millbank’s and Miss Koejemans’ classes have combined to learn about “How living things adapt to change in Port Augusta”.

This learning encompasses Maths, Geography, History, Design and Technology/ Digital Technology, Visual Art and Music subjects.

Students will learn how to design and plant seedlings that flourish in an arid climate as well as about past and present people who have made a positive change to

Australia and Port Augusta. They will also engage in designing a musical instrument related to other Indigenous musical

instruments. So far students are really enjoying working together and listening to what each class

member has to say about the learning presented.
