Social Science Faculty Report Year 7 Culture and Language:

In Term 2, our Year 7 Cohort has been working toward preparing and presenting an itinerary to our island neighbour of Indonesia, incorporating topics they have covered across the whole year so far. Using their knowledge and imagination, our students used language and geography skills to develop an exciting and interesting 10+ day trip to many of the incredible cities, island culture and natural features that Indonesia has to offer.

Using a generous budget of $8000 students chose to include many exciting activities, such as ethical Elephant Safari Parks and snorkelling with manta rays to hot springs and water adventure parks. Developing their knowledge of overseas travel, international foods and travel safety tips, students immersed themselves and their peers in the life-changing experiences that are possible with all our Indo-Pacific neighbours.

All together our lessons have exposed our students to the incredible environments, perspectives, cultures, and cuisines from around the world and within our local community, leading to students that are truly global citizens.

Year 8

During Week 8 this term, Year 8 Geography students participated in an online Geography Challenge run by NSW Education and Communities. Students were presented with an issue, which may impact on the delicate ecosystem of Narawang Wetland (Sydney Olympic Park), and they were challenged to examine past and present environmental issues, conduct virtual fieldwork, and propose action through the development of a brief Research Action Plan. Tasks that students were challenged with completing during the virtual fieldwork included measuring air temperature, wind speed, relative humidity, light intensity, and cloud cover. Students were also required to carry out a number of abiotic water quality tests and biotic tests as well as observations. Students worked extremely well in pairs to complete all tasks and gain valuable information and skills along the way.

Year 9

This semester, Year 9 students have been completing units on Changing Places and Sustainable Biomes.

In Term 1, students had the opportunity to put their geographical skills into action by complete a site study on the cultural diversity of the Albury CBD. Students observed, recorded and analysed the benefits of diversity within our community.

Year 9 students on their Cultural Diversity Task of the Albury CBD.

In Term 2, students examined the characteristics and sustainability of biomes. They examined the challenges people around the world face while trying to secure food. The Food Security Game required students to assume a new identity and occupation to explore how food insecurity impacts people around the world in different ways.

Year 9 students finished off the semester in Geography by creating their own board games, which were designed to demonstrate their understanding of food security and enhance the knowledge of game players.

Year 11 Geography and Business Studies - Thankyou: an Australian Enterprise

Senior Geography and Business Studies students were invited to take part in a presentation from Thankyou.

This opportunity was funded by Charles Sturt University ‘AgriTech Incubator’ and saw Mr Kalvin Hart, the brother of founding member Justine Flynn, come and present regarding the social changes Thankyou strive to make in our global community and how they have grown their Australian company since its establishment in 2008.

Thankyou has come a long way since the founders googled ‘how to start a bottled water company’ while studying at university. Ten years later, Thankyou sells 55 products through major supermarkets and retailers in Australia and now also in New Zealand.

During sessions students shared in the Thankyou journey, including the challenges they faced and the approach they used to break the status-quo, which included social media campaigns to get their bottled water into 7/11 stores and flying helicopters around Coles and Woolworths headquarters to expand their distribution.

Thankyou the shared lessons they learned around perseverance, “thinking big” and getting outside of their comfort zone. This session aimed to inspire students into believing that changing the world is totally possible.

Year 11 CAFS

As part of their Individual and Groups unit of work, year 11 CAFS students have been analysing how teamwork qualities and leadership skills combine to achieve goals. Students were asked to employ what they learnt in class by participating in a team challenge to create an outfit using newspaper and sticky tape. By implementing the teamwork skills and leadership qualities students produced some outstanding outfits.

Year 12 Aboriginal Studies

Year 12 Aboriginal Studies students rejoiced this term when their Major Projects were finally submitted. This task was a culmination of two terms worth of work where the students were able to choose their research topic and how they presented their project. They should be immensely proud of their efforts! The class celebrated the end of a great term with breakfast, which has become a tradition in the class.

Year 12 CAFS

Our Year 12 CAFS class has been studying the topic ‘parenting and caring’ and as a part of this unit, we decided to reach out to a local organisation that supports these people in our community. Tots To Teens provide clothing, toys, and basic necessities to those who have experienced trauma, or for children who have been placed in the care of another. A big thank you to this group of students for being so generous, and for our school staff who also donated to this awesome charity.

JFHS Sports Wrap!

After an extremely busy start to the year both Miss Dibben and I thought that Term Two would be a bit more relaxed, how wrong we were!

JFHS students have been busy on the sporting field this term. We knocked over all of our school sporting carnivals in week 2 with the Athletics carnival. Since then we have also had the zone cross country, Riverina cross country and more recently the zone athletics carnival with our students producing some very pleasing results, such as:

• Savannah Johnson – 12yrs girls age champion at the zone cross country carnival • Lenny Foard – 15yrs boys age champion at the zone cross country carnival • 14 JFHS students qualify and represent JFHS at the Riverina cross country carnival in Gundagai • Five JFHS students – Destinee Richards, Lenny Foard, Noah Nyombe, Josh O’Connor and David

Hassan qualifying for the NSW CHS cross country carnival at Western Creek in Term Three • JFHS coming a close 2nd in the overall points to AHS at the zone athletics carnival • Over 40 students from JFHS qualifying for the Riverina athletics carnival in week 2, Term Three in

Albury. Including 7 relay teams! • Letisha Chand – 15yrs girls age champion at the zone athletics carnival • Alesha Willcox – 17yrs girls age champion at the zone athletics carnival

Now onto the sporting field! We have had hockey gala days, table tennis competitions and soccer games galore! We have also had JFHS students represent Riverina at CHS carnivals this term in hockey, golf, soccer and AFL to name a few!

JFHS has experienced some pleasing results particularly with the Open Boys Soccer Team who are down to the final 16 schools in the state. The boys will take on their next competitor in the first few weeks back next term. We are extremely proud of their efforts and would like to wish Mr Mills and his squad the best of luck in the upcoming game!

CHS Hockey Gala Day

Friday of week eight, Miss Dibben, Mrs Morrison and twenty hockey superstars braved the cold, foggy morning to participate in the CHS hockey gala day. James Fallon entered both a girl’s and boys’ team into the competition but unfortunately couldn’t field a full girls’ team on the day.

Despite this, our girls played throughout the day undefeated when coming up against the forces of Xavier High, Trinity Anglican College and Albury High. The girls played incredibly well calling up new recruits from year seven Lana hook-Hodgkinson, Savannah Somerfield and Stephanie Adams (after she had spent the week in Moorebank representing Riverina in hockey). Our halves were unstoppable with Piper Lockley-Hinschen and Alissa Rahaley proving themselves as key players on the field both in offensive and defensive plays. Our senior players, Rylee Pontt and Casey Hartley dictated the play on the field and made every effort to make the games as inclusive and as fun as they could be. An incredibly huge and special mention to one of the most committed hockey players James Fallon High has seen in some time, Simone Walker was not only a key player being goal keeper for the girls team, but, ran between the two hockey fields and played six games on the day between the boys and girls. Well done Simone and congratulations to all the girls and their fantastic efforts representing James Fallon.

The boys’ team remained incredibly competitive throughout the day, staying in the running for the title up until the very last game of the day. The boys (and Simone) came up against Corowa High, Xavier High and Albury High. James Fallon has been lucky enough to have some strong hockey players over the past few years with many of our players making the Riverina team. It was a bitter sweet day having some of these players on the field with us, including Branden Lowe, Tyson Williams and Declan McQuellin as it was their final gala day wearing the James Fallon colours. The final game for the day proved too much for our stronghold in spite of the valiant defensive efforts of Kurtis Somerfield, Brodie Hamilton and Liam Schofield. It was very obvious from the side lines that Connor Vermolen and Kipp Reeve were not giving up on any ball that came their way and Josh O’Connor was not letting any player past on his watch. Regardless of being one of the youngest players on the team, Seth Russell showed uniqueness, nerve and talent when up against boys twice his height and double his age. Jay Blanes took on advice and developed his skills for the game throughout the day. With a flair for sportsmanship and a give-it-a-go attitude Blair Mclean-Boyer took the field and was the fresh legs the team needed when faced with fatigue. Congratulations to all the boys and their honourable efforts representing James Fallon.

A final congratulations to Mrs Morrison who not only coached the boy’s team but organised and ran the entire CHS gala day. It was such a wonderfully run event that was enjoyed by all. Well Done!

Miles Hemann-Petersen Miles is an avid sportsman and a Year 10 student at JFHS. Recently Miles was part of the U15’s Riverina boys AFL team and coached by our very own JFHS staff member, Mr Richard Leahy. Richard and the boys achieved success at the CHS U15’s boys AFL carnival by winning the carnival and we would like to congratulate them on an outstanding team effort. Now not only has Miles had an extremely successful few weeks on the footy field, but he has also been selected in the Riverina U16’s First XI boy’s cricket team to play in a tour of India in the Term Three school holidays. An unbelievable experience Miles will no doubt have on this tour!

Year 9 Drama

This term, Year 9 Drama studied ‘Issues-Based Playbuilding’. As a group, they devised their own performance on the issue of Global Warming and the environment. The class brainstormed, researched and workshopped their topic and created a performance from scratch. They performed for Year 10 and will present their piece again at the CAPA Showcase in Term 3.

Ms Williams

EAL/D Workshop

This term Daisy Franz from Personnel Employment has been running careers workshops with many of the older EALD students. She has been assisted by Diana Elliot of the Albury Wodonga Volunteer Resource Bureau.

These workshops have covered targeting jobs based on existing skills and interests, learning about requirements for jobs and the development of fantastic resumes.

The Importance of Attendance

HIGH ATTENDANCE = MORE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES = MORE QUALIFICATIONS = MORE CHOICE

Ways for parents to encourage attendance:

Regularly check your child’s attendance record at the school to see if it matches with your own record.

Talk regularly with your child about school and how they feel about it. They are more likely to attend if they feel supported and their anxieties are acknowledged.

Only grant days at home for genuine illness.

Avoid taking holidays in school time.

Praise and reward good attendance and punctuality in the mornings.

If you have concerns, ring the school and ask to talk to your child’s Year Advisor.
