Physical Literacy is defined as "the motivation, confidence, physical competence, understanding and knowledge to maintain physical activity at an individually appropriate level, throughout life" (Whitehead, 2006).

“Many teachers lack the confidence and skills to create purposeful learning experiences for students in physical activity settings”.

“The focus on purposeful learning, active participation and skill development should be central to both PDHPE and School Sport”. Renee West (PDHPE Advisor). Would you like to learn more about how to plan and deliver successful Physical Activity Opportunities?Later this year we will look to deliver a PDHPE Network Meeting that covers this topic.

“Fruit and Friend Break” at OLMC

Our Lady of Mount Carmel have a unique and fantastic take on the Crunch and Sip® break. Each day at

10am the children at the school partake in “Fruit and Friend”.

The idea of the break is that each child must befriend someone new each day and chat to them. The

idea has been a huge success and has helped the children find new friends and increase confidence and

social skills.

Below is what some of the children had to say:

Peter: I like it because we talk to our friends

CASE STUDY – OLMC WENTWORTHVILLE

Peter: I like it because we talk to our friends and meet

different people each time. I enjoy eating fruit.

James: I feel relaxed because I am with my friends.

Elisha: You get to talk to different people about different

things. You find out things about people.

Jacinta: It’s good because you get to know what other

people like and you talk about different topics.

Morris: it’s really good because you get to talk about

things you know.

Tana: I like it because sometimes you don’t get to talk to

other people cause you can’t find them on the

playground. You get to share your life stories with them.

Mia: I like it because you talk to people you haven’t

spoken to for a long time and you get to talk about

different topics.

Violet: I like fruit and friend break because you get to

talk to a friend and eat your fruit at the same time.

Participate in Vegetable Week &/ or the Big Vegie Crunch this May!

What is Vegetable Week?

Vegetable Week, is a quick, easy and FREE school-based health promotion event that aims to increase

students’ knowledge, exposure and positive attitudes towards vegetables. It is also a great way to

promote Crunch&Sip® in your school after the holiday break.

What is The Big Vegie Crunch?

This is part of Vegetable Week. It is a time for students from all different schools to stop and eat

vegetables at the same time.

In last year’s Big Vegie Crunch event, 13,000 students in 61 NSW primary schools crunched together to

break the record for the most kids eating vegetables simultaneously. In 2017 we want to smash these

numbers!

When is it being held?

Vegetable Week: Monday 22 May to Friday 26 May 2017

The Big Vegie Crunch: 10am on Thursday 25 May.

Note: If your school or class can't crunch at 10am on Thursday 25 May, you can make another time

during the week that suits your school better.

What will registered schools receive?

Your school may want to do more than just a one-off crunch to promote vegetables. So you will also be

provided with plenty of educational and fun ideas for additional activities you may choose to do over

Vegetable Week to encourage your students (and staff!) to eat more vegetables.

Registered schools will also receive resources to help with planning, preparation and communication.

How do schools register?

Registration is free and schools can complete the easy online registration form found at: www.healthy-

kids.com.au/vegetable-week-the-big-vegie-crunch/

Want more information?

Take a look at the Vegetable Week & The Big Vegie Crunch webpage (www.healthy-

NEWSLETTER SNIPPETS

Turn off, Tune in and Get Active!

Last term, the LLW@S team were promoting the benefits of

reducing the amount of time children spend in front of

screens. This was timely after the holiday period.

Did you miss our Term 1 Newsletter Snippet?

Contact your Support officer to receive a PDF or JPEG copy

of our A5 newsletter snippet that can easily fit one of your

weekly or fortnightly newsletters. They contain lots of

pictures to help make them visually appealing and

encourage families to read the information.

When do we send our Newsletter Snippets?

These should arrive in your inbox in week 4 of every school term. We also send a copy to your school

administration. So double check that they are receiving the snippets and are able to include them in

your next newsletter.

Why do we encourage schools to include newsletter snippets with health tips?

We encourage schools to provide health information to families about a range of topics: reducing

small screen recreation, eating healthier foods and being more active. This is so they can learn a few

health tips, and hopefully adopt some of these into their daily routines. Our newsletter snippets are

just a sample. You can use these or make your own.
