Term 2 Week 10 Term 2 Newsletter 2017 MARY BROOKSBANK SCHOOL Independence and Acceptance Dear Parents and Carers Staff Changes The last day of this term will be a sad day for our school. We are losing three very valued and respected staff members. Sandi Sutherland has accepted the posion of Assistant Principal at Passfield Park School, she will be replaced by Sacha Kennedy in the short term whilst a permanent replacement is decided upon. Carol Properzi who has been working at the school for 28 years, much of this me as our relief from face to face (RFF) teacher is rering and moving to Perth to be closer to her family, Naomi Pugh will be replacing Carol for the remainder of this year. Kylie Glover, our School Administraon Officer has accepted a posion at Spring Farm School, a replacement has yet to be decided upon. All three of these staff members have had an enormous impact on the school and more importantly, the students. I want to thank them personally for devong so much me and effort to our students and for advocang relessly for the school. Step Challenge As part of the Premier’s Sporng Challenge, all staff were given a wrist band ‘fit bit’ that counted the number of steps taken over a 24 hour period. Our most energec staff members were Chris Wagner, Jacquie Rebeira and Erin Wightman. For their efforts, they were relieved of their playground dues for a day with Holly or myself covering for them. Dot (our cleaner) also parcipated in the challenge and was the winner on several occasions. This meant that I had to do half hour of cleaning on Monday mornings for a few weeks. If you think the front foyer windows look clean, the staff toilet is clean and the foyer carpet nicely vacuumed, you can thank me. If you don’t think I’ve done the job as well as Dot does, I’m sorry! She has very high standards to meet! S.E.A.T The school is being recognised for its work on the S.E.A.T project and the Naonal Project Manager is working with Holly and Mandy to get more schools in our local area to introduce the program to their students. Our school’s story has been added to the S.E.A.T website: hp://seatproject.org/. Please take the me to look at this website and really appreciate the determinaon shown by our students in producing the seats and using their me and effort to supporng others. Funds raised from the sale of the seat at the Court Tavern will go to an organisaon in Samoa that supports people with a disability.

Dear Parents and Carers Staff Changes The last day of this term will be a sad day for our school. We are losing three very valued and respected staff members. Seesaw: Staff have undertaken professional learning this term around Seesaw. It will be rolled out across the school next term when the permission notes will be sent home. Once the permission note has been signed, families will be invited to join Seesaw and be part of their child’s learning by receiving photos, videos and notes to parents. Education Week and Scholastic Book Fair: The Scholastic book fair will be held on Tuesday 1st August as part of the school’s open day for Education Week. The book fair will enable families to purchase books for their child and / or as a donation to the school library. A percentage of al l sales will come to the school. More information will be sent home early next term about the day. Please keep this date free as it is an opportunity for you to see what happens in your child’s classroom and to celebrate public education. Shining Stars: Over the term, Sharisse and Megan have taken a group of talented students to a number of dance practice sessions which culminated in a performance at the Seymour Centre in week 9. Monica, Moonlight, Emma, Zachary and Mitchell were outstanding ambassadors for our school as they travelled to the city on the train, performed late into the night and travelled back home by bus. Not only did they excel in their dancing, but they had a great time in the city eating and hanging out as a group of friends do. Fundraising: During the term, we have been very lucky to have had two amazing fundraisers, Court Tavern Wine Appreciation Night in conjunction with Peter Osman who climbed Mt Kilimanjaro & the McDonalds Fundraiser. These events were both well supported by staff, families and community members. We raised a combined total of $15,379 which will go towards the upgrade of the infants playground. Many thanks to the Bruce Family for your continued support each year.

Enjoy a safe and restful break over the holidays and we look forward to seeing all our families and students back next term.

Students return on Tuesday 18th July.

Principal

On Tuesday 13 June, Goziem, Jackson, Wayne, Tim, Tama, Emma B, Emma M, Christine and Marlene set out for 3 nights, 4 days camp to Stewart House at Curl Curl.

We travelled by train to Central and then Stewart House picked us up in their bus. We all were very excited to travel over the bridge and to see how beautiful the view of the ocean was when we arrived at Stewart House.

We won’t tell you everything now but we will say it was one of the best camps ever.

We went to the zoo and saw the baby elephant, rode in a chair lift, watched a seal and a bird show. After the zoo we went to this unreal park by the ocean and watched as lots of fire brigades went by as there was a fire in the distance.

Nick our carer for the day said that it was at Simon’s house (as Simon was our night carer for the next night) he was at home cooking, this was not true but we did see Channel 7 news helicopter. We also went to Olympic Park Aquatic Centre for a swim and rapid ride.

We walked over the bridge and looked at Vivid and spent an afternoon at Manly beach having an ice cream from Yogurtland yum yum. The food was also great at camp – the only thing there was lots and lots of walking.

From the happy campers

Melissa recently received the Sir Walter Leonard Memorial Trophy for her achievements in life saving by

a person with a disability or working with people with a disability as well as an Associate Award for her

length of service. She is the sole recipient of this award in 2017.

Melissa has over 20 years experience and we are extremely lucky to have her teaching our children

swimming during Wednesday swimming lessons.

We are very proud school community of Melisssa’s achievements and grateful to have her as part of the

staff here at MBS.

Dear Parents and Carers,

Firstly, the P&C would like to say farewell and wish Sandi, Carol & Kylie the best of luck on their new

adventures.

The Annual Bingo & Silent Auction Fundraiser Night is on again. The date has been set for Friday 15th

September 2017 at Campbelltown Catholic Club at 6:30pm.

Thankyou to parents who have already donated items over during the term. Don’t forget to still keep an

eye out for theme donation letters coming home. It certainly not to late to still send in any items that

you are able to donate. It is always greatly appreciated and helps make our Bingo night successful. All

proceeds that are raised goes directly back to the school to assist with the improvements of the Infants

playground.

Please contact Melanie in the office on 4628-4555 to book a seat for the night. Tables are selling quickly

so don’t waste anytime in obtaining your tickets. Tickets are $20ea and we have tables of 10.

We are also after helpers to help set up on the day, so if you have a couple of hours free please feel free

to come along and lend a hand, it would be very much appreciated.

In celebration of the school’s 30th Anniversary in August the P&C are holding a Tea Towel fundraiser.

Printed on the tea towel will be each student’s name or hand print along with the school’s logo and 30th

Anniversary. More details about our pre-order will be available shortly.

Our next P&C meeting will take place on Monday 14th August 2017 in the library at 9.30am. Please come

along and we are still asking for any parent or carer to consider joining our P&C . Its not only a great way

to meet other parents and carers but it also allows you to see how we operate to support every student

at MBS.

Lastly we wish all families a safe and well earned break and look forward to seeing you all in Term 3
