PALS—SELECTED SENIOR STUDENTS
On Friday 12th February a selected group of seniors
attended a PALS session
with Sport Hawke’s Bay at
the Pettigrew Arena. The
programme is an initiative
to encourage physical
activity and develop
leadership through sports.
―It was an amazing experience and we were able to bring back what we had learned and teach the kids
new games, which they seem to love.‖ —Jack Ralph (Sports Captain)
―The PALS was a fun experience, seeing all the different schools involved and meeting new people. We learnt leadership skills and fun games that we
brought back to school.‖ —Kristyn Elliott (School Ambassador)

FARADAY TRIP
On Thursday 10th March all students have the opportunity to go to the Faraday Centre in Napier.
Napier’s Faraday Centre is an Aladdin’s cave of technological treasures from days gone by. Faraday Favourites is a fun, educational session incorporating
students’ favourite activities from some of the Faraday Centre’s most popular education programmes.
During the visit the children will get to explore; electricity, energy, simple machines, inventions, technology of the olden days, sounds, light and
weather.
Cost - $4.50 per student – it is free for accompanying
adults. (no toddlers please)
To enable us to go we need your support. We require adults to come and work with children in groups of 4 or
5. We also need transport to and from the Faraday Centre. The Junior School (Waitio, Kiwirua, Matapiro)
will be going first, leaving school at 9.30am and the Senior School (Oreka and Okawa) will be going second,
leaving school at 11.30am.
Permission forms went home on Monday and are due
back this Friday 26th February so we can arrange
transport.
Payment will be required by Friday 4th March if the
trip is to go ahead.

TECHNOLOGY ROTATION—2016
To parents of those children who are year 7 or 8; Taradale Intermediate have changed the way
technology runs this year and instead of it being once a week they will now attend it in week-long blocks.
Classes will be from 9:45am-2pm allowing no disruption to our buses and will now be once a term.
Term 1: Week 7 (March 14th-18th)
Term 2: Week 3 (May 16th-20th)
Term 3: Week 7 (September 5th-9th)
Term 4: Week 6 (November 14th-18th)
Triathlon We are looking forward to you all attending our Triathlon and cheering on our athletes. We want all students to attempt this and encourage them to give all three disciplines a go. There will be spot prizes handed out by teachers at the end, and we would like all children to stay until the end please so that we can give these out. It will be a hot day and we will be erecting the Sun Shade for the day, all students will be
told to ensure they keep in the shade and that they have sun block on.
Beginning of Year Assessment By now all of our teachers have finished doing some pre testing and profiling their classrooms and setting concrete plans based on data from last year and their observations this year. I encourage you to contact your classroom teachers if you have any concerns to ensure you are
informed on their plans for your children this year. We pride ourselves on being open and transparent with you and want to ensure we do the best for all of our students at Puke.
Assembly This week Matapiro will be show casing what they have been doing over the last four weeks. We do encourage you all to attend to support children in public speaking and presenting. All assemblies start at 2:15pm and we aim to finish by 2:45pm. A great turn out last week of parents, thank you—Sean Moore

INTERESTING FACTS
Yesterday, as part of our staff Professional Development, we attended an online course with Karen Boyes. She is a leading educator who has researched brain development, modern learning
environments and teaching practices. In the presentation she quoted that ―40% of our 5 year
olds today will leave school and be self employed.‖ The impact on our learning environment
about this fact is, how are we preparing our children to be ―self motivated, self monitoring, self pacing‖ learners? It raised a number of interesting questions about our styles of teaching and about
what we are doing in class. One element of practice we are working on is making our children aware of their next steps and ensuring they know what they
are doing next in their learning.
CLUSTER SWIMMING—24th MARCH
As our cluster swimming event approaches, the classroom teachers will be utilising their PE time to train in the pool (especially the middle and senior
school). Please ensure all children have a towel and suitable swim wear for the weeks leading up to this
event. If your child needs to be excused for any reason, please provide a note excusing them.
