Congratulations to all the students who competed in the area swimming carnival last week. Being eligible to swim at that level is a huge achievement and as a school, we are extremely proud of you. Greenway Park students went out of their way to look after each other and support one another in all of the races. As usual their behaviour was reported to be exemplary. Unfortunately due to other commitments I was unable to visit this year but a huge thank you also to the parents who attended to support our students.

After the Annual General Meeting last Tuesday we are pleased to introduce our P&C executive for 2019. The committee will continue the hard work they started last year in supporting the school and raising money to help fund school initiatives and resources. Once again they would love to see more of our community come along to future meetings. Meetings will be held in Week 3 and Week 7 of each school term. So please do not be shy! The P&C is a great way to meet other parents and community members and to become authentic partners in the education process.

Thursday 7th March marked the official opening of our newest outdoor learning area - our Yarning Circle. We were very fortunate to have Uncle Brad and Jestyn perform a cleansing ceremony to prepare our yarning circle for use and welcome positive energy and experiences. Our school leaders, Aboriginal students and parents, our P&C and some school staff were also present at the ceremony. A huge thank you must go to our amazing P & C who contributed $10000 towards the construction and to our talent ed landscape designer Cameron who puts his heart and soul into everything he does. We look forward to the next stage of the project being finalised over the next few months.

Just a reminder that on Tuesday 26th March 2019 from 9am-10am and 6.30am-7.30pm we will be holding our first school focus group for 2019. This is a great opportunity for parents to authentically engage with the school executive and be informed about some of the decision-making processes in the school. The focus of this meeting will be on possible changes to our school reporting system in 2020, our new student reward system and PBL. Light refreshments including coffee, tea and juice will be available on the day. We are looking forward to seeing you there.

School photos will take place TOMORROW (Wednesday 20th March). All students are expected to come to school in their full school uniform which includes black shoes and the correct coloured socks. Please do not send students to school in their sports clothes. Every student participates in the class photo and individual photos even if they are not purchasing them. Therefore it is important that students come prepared. Students are to hand their payment envelope to their class teacher, however, sibling photo payment envelopes are to be handed to the front office. Please enclose the correct money as change cannot be given by the photographer.

On Thursday 21th March, the students will celebrate Harmony Day with their class. Traditionally on this day students come to school dressed in orange. Students will need to bring a gold coin donation if they are NOT wearing their school uniform. Money raised will support our struggling farmers. Classes will discuss the meaning of Harmony day in their classes.

How do we achieve positive and practical change in our schools? We listen to what students, teachers and parents have to say. Providing valuable insight for our school planning, The Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Survey is a complete evaluation system for measuring student engagement, wellbeing and classroom climate, and other factors known to affect learning outcomes. Information is captured from students in Years 4-6, parents and teachers, to guide decision-making for school planning and ultimately increase student achievement. Students in Years 4, 5 and 6 will participate in the survey over the next 3 weeks. Individual notes have been sent home for parents who do not wish for their child to participate in the survey.

Students in Year 3 and 5 will participate in a practice online assessment beginning the 25th March to the 5th April. This will involve a 45 minute Omnibus test that includes Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy test items. Writing will NOT be included. The practice tests provides students in Year 3 and 5 with an opportunity to become familiar with the types of questions they will experience in NAPLAN online If you would like to discuss NAPLAN further or would like to withdraw your child from the assessment, please contact the class teacher and arrange a meeting.

School Banking Day will be Tuesday, commencing on 19th March 2019. School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for students to learn about money and develop good savings habits. For each weekly deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once they collect 10 tokens, they can redeem them for a School Banking reward. If your child has previously participated in School Banking, or has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youth Saver Account, they can start banking straight away by bringing their Dollarmites deposit wallet to school on School Banking day. If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on School Banking day and we will issue them with a replacement book. Our School Banking program is made possible because of parent volunteers. Thank you to those volunteers for donating their time to run School Banking for our students. If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2019 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who took them time to fill in the survey regarding student reports. We had 72 responses which has provided us with insights of what you value and what you would like to see as parents and community members. There were varying views on a lot of things but also some common trends that we will continue to explore as we progress further into improving our reporting systems. Next, we aim to survey our staff and explore some of the concerns and beliefs of our teachers. After that, we will correlate the responses and explore some possible changes for 2020 that align with policies and procedures from the Department of Education. We still have a long road ahead but we want to ensure you - our community, that your voices have been heard. Thank you again for your continued support.

If you have any uniforms that your children have outgrown, the P&C ane in desperate need of your help. Please send uniforms to the front office where they will be passed on to the P&C. Please only send in uniforms that have the logo, not items that have been purchased elsewhere. With the cooler weather approaching, this is a reminder that the uniform shop is selling trousers for girls, in the stretchy fabric. Girls are encouraged NOT to wear leggings as a part of their uniform. We need our students to be Proud of the uniform they wear and this can be achieved when students correctly wear the school uniform, including black shoes.

In the recent storms, some of our classrooms were damaged by the extreme weather. The damage varied from excess water under doors to broken skylights and leaks. We have put all appropriate measures in place to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone in our care. We have advised the maintenance section of the Department of Education and will work with them through the insurance process. In the meantime, we will continue to work at a school level to make classrooms a comfortable and safe space to learn.

The Online Safety, Start the Chat campaign is about helping everyone in a child’s life to have a conversation about online safety. The youngest generation of children are the first to grow up in a fully connected digital world – for them, the online world is now just as much a part of their lives as the offline world. With technology changing so fast, it’s important to be proactive and talk about online safety early and often. Everybody can play an important role in helping children and young people to have positive and safe online experiences – including parents, teachers, carers, siblings, grandparents, mentors and sports coaches. If you feel unsure about how to talk to kids about online safety, you’re not alone. eSafety has a range of tools, tips and resources to help have that conversation – whether it’s today, tomorrow or in the future. For more information, go to https://www.esafety.gov.au/start-the-chat
