A very proud Amelia ourInaugural
recipient of the Aunty Kaumoana
Trophy she received at our Prizegiving
last year.
Who will it be this year??
Over the holidays Libby decided to cut her long hair and donate it to Freedom Wigs - they make wigs for people who lose their hair due to illness / long term extensive hair loss. Libby also used the opportunity to raise funds for Bear Cottage, a children’s hospice in Sydney which is a place very close to her family’s heart. Libby managed to raise nearly $1500 and would like to thank all her Pirongia friends who supported her.
Before
After
A very warm welcome back to the new school year!
This is our first newsletter of the year and it contains a lot of information for you! Please
use the newsletter as your main source of information about the day to day what’s what
at school. It will be emailed to you and you can access through the Skool Loop App.
There are also some hardcopies at the office for those who require them.
We are pleased to be back and loving the fact that our new classrooms are finished and
everyone and everything is back in the right place. Our Pōwhiri and formal opening and
blessing of the new classrooms were very positive and affirming ways to start the new
year.
Kawaka team are loving the new spaces to learn and teach in and the Y7/8s are enjoying
having their own space in the school. Sandra-Lee has made a beautiful job of creating our
STEM room for Science, Technology , Engineering and Mathematics. It will spark curiosity
and excitement for our learners. Whaea Kathie has used the temporary classroom (room
16 last year) to create a wonderful whānau room for Te Reo, Kapa Haka, and for our
whānau to meet in.
Please feel welcome to come in and see what has been achieved over the past year, if you
haven’t already. We could not be happier!
Have a great week, nga mihi
Jan
Picking up and dropping off on BELCHER STREET
This year we have a teacher on duty at one of the back gates after school. Wendy has been there last week and this week to make sure children who are walking and biking, cross safely, following many concerns express by you as parents. We are asking that if you pick up and drop off here that you ensure your child crosses safely by meet-ing them on the school side of the road. We have had a parent volunteer to help watch children cross at the other gate and we are asking for more volunteers to help us with this please. We will make a roster. Please phone the office if you can help.
Also if you have concerns and would like a kea crossing there, could you please email/write/send these concerns to me which I will add to mine and pass on to NZ Police and Waipa District Council. Con-stable Brenton Irwin has asked the Council to look into this but we need to follow up if we are to expect any action in the near future.
Pool help needed!
We are looking for someone to help us out with the
pool in the weekends. At present Leanne gets no let
up from the job and we would like to train someone
as a back up.
If you are interested, please phone the office to speak
to me, come in or email me
Also, please stick to the rules outlined
in your contract to have a pool key.
Children must be accompanied by an
adult if under 12 and please no BOMBING into the
pool.
Staffing
Over the holidays we have
employed 2 new staff for our
Tech Arts programme.
Ali Ruthe will take

We look forward
to them joining
our staff in their
respective roles.

CHILDREN’S FAIR
Raising funds for the Pirongia Junior
Playground Project
The school has been approached to help out with the
running of this event on Sunday March the 3rd.
We have asked our senior students to give some time
to this event by running the fundraiser stalls. A
wonderful day has been planned, so if you can spare
some time to help, it would be appreciated.
Commsafe Ambrose Charity Golf Tournament
If you are a golfer you might like to get a team together to support this very worthwhile charity. Commsafe is the engine room behind Community Patrols and Neighbourhood Support. They have also sponsored our
Junior Neighbourhood Support initiative here at school. All details and entry forms are here at the office.

Kia ora e te whānau He mihi mahana ki a koutou katoa. A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of our Pōwhiri last Monday, it was a beautiful, authentic ceremony and every participant made it so. He mihi aroha. We are loving the new ‘Whānau Room’. Feel free to come by and have a look, or hang out. See photo below. Te Reo Māori and Kapahaka has commenced. We are introducing an additional Reo session this year - Te Whakaoho (The Awakening). This will run on Tuesdays from 2pm - 2:50 and is a class specifically intended to raise Māori cultural identity and extend Te Reo Māori further. The Friday sessions will continue as they were last year. Te Kakano (The Seed) - for students who would like to extend their reo beyond what they might be receiving in the classroom - 9:30-10:10; followed by Te Puawai (The Blossoming) - for students who want further extension from the morning session - 10:15-10:55. These sessions are open to students year 3 and above. All Te Reo sessions are also open to adult whānau members and staff (probably the Te Puawai session - during school singing - may be a possible option for staff). If there is enough interest from staff and the community, I may also look at offering an evening Te Reo Class. Kapahaka will run at the same time as last year, so in the middle block from 11:25 - 12:40. Kapahaka is open to students year 4 and above, however some year 3 students will be considered if they have an aptitude for Kapahaka, and are able to manage the workload and the commitment level that is required. All classes will be run from the Whānau Room, as will our Whānau Hui which will be on the Thursday, 21st at 7pm. Please come and join us for a meeting and supper. This will also be an initial planning meeting for Kapahaka Festival which we are hosting this year—25 October 2019. Ngā mihi, Kathie
