Junior AECG—HARMONY DAY On behalf of our AEO and the Junior AECG representatives, we would like thank Burnside Uniting for allowing their traditional dancers time out to come and help us celebrate HARMONY DAY, and for assisting us in promoting our culture. After performing the Wiradjuri welcome to country dance, these guys were great throughout the afternoon as they performed many other traditional dances. The dancers kept students interested and remained focused on the importance of Harmony Day. We would also like to express our appreciation to the ladies from Burnside who held a “My Jar” activity. The activity involved filling a small clear glass container with components, which reflected our individual journeys in life so far . This activity was very engaging for many students.

Creating mature and responsible citizens

Term 1 7 April 2017

ICAS 2017—SCIENCE NEWS ICAS is an independent, skills-based assessment program which recognises and rewards student achievement. This is unique test, being the most comprehensive generally available suite of academic assessments for primary and secondary school students. The assessments comprise eight Digital Technologies tests, eleven English tests, eleven Maths tests, eleven Science tests, six Spelling tests and ten Writing tests. Over one million student entries are accepted from over 6,300 schools in Australia and New Zealand annually. In addition, students from over 20 countries including Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa and the USA participate in ICAS each year. A new ICAS test is developed annually for each subject in each year level by our team of subject matter experts. All ICAS tests are reviewed by experienced teachers to ensure that they accurately assess students’ skills and are relevant to what they are learning at school. Some schools use ICAS as a psychometric test to better understand what students can and can’t do at a point in time and track learning as students’ progress from year to year. Other schools use ICAS results as a component of a student’s overall academic achievement for the year and still others use ICAS as a placement test. Each test is sat at the student’s school and is invigilated by teachers under normal examination conditions. Specific preparation for ICAS tests is not required as the

assessments are skills-based. ICAS assists with tracking an

individual student's performance as she progresses ,monitor

and compare students’ performance in the school, track the

performance of whole year cohorts, over time compare the

performance of different year levels, identify students who may

require additional support and identify high-achieving students. University of New South Wales (UNSW) Medals Students with the top score in each subject in each year level are awarded a medal and a medal winner’s certificate. For any further information please login to https://www.eaa.unsw.edu.au/icas/about Harry Kater is one of our students who has achieved outstanding results and was awarded with the Principal’s award. Debating Debut! On Monday 3rd April South Campus debuted their debating talents in some friendly debates against the Delroy Campus debating teams. The students spent the day learning from each other and practising their skills before the Premier’s Debating Challenge officially begins next term. The Year 8 team consisting of Harrison Kater, Phoenix Aubison-Foley and Thane Roberts put forward some powerful arguments as to why the government should be funding major sporting events. The boys spoke with confidence and worked well as a team. The Year 9 girls’ team consisting of Amber Ahsan, Lily Callaghan, Courtney Russell and Ellee Taylor were rather convincing in their argument that celebrities have too much influence on teenagers. They made some very interesting points about just how much the lives of teenagers are affected by the actions of their idols. The Year 10 team consisting of Ava Talbot, Hannah Tucker, Henry Smidt-Geering and Merayne Thomas presented a strong

argument as to why bullies should not be held legally accountable for their actions. They raised several good arguments and were a strong and convincing team.

Well done to all the students in the South Campus debating teams for an amazing day full of fun and learning!

Sport Report Brock selected in the Australian All Schools

Cricket Team!!

Our very own Dubbo College South Campus Year 10

student Brock Larance has been selected in the

Australian under 16’s All Schools Cricket squad. This

means that Brock is one of the best cricketers under the

age of 16 in Australia!

Brock was part of the under-15 NSW Green team that won the National Championships in Queensland defeating NSW Magenta in the final 143 to 87. Brock made 30 and took 1/3 with the ball in the final. Throughout the carnival he made 233 runs at an average of 58.25 making his selection a formality. Well done Brock and good luck in September when you represent Australian Schools. Congratulations from all the students and staff of Dubbo College South Campus!

Western Area CHS Netball On the 23rd oMarch Dubbo College South Campus’ U16’s Netball Team competed in the Western Area CHS Division A competition in Dubbo. The girls were asked to compete as an invitational team on the day and despite being able to progress through to the Western Area Finals the girls won two of their four games. South won convincingly against Lake Cargelligo (14-8) and Bourke (42-13), however were defeated by Nyngan and the Dubbo College Open Team. It was an excellent experience for the South Team to come against the Dubbo College Team and witness the level of skill the Open Team has to offer. All girls showed excellent sportsmanship on the day and were eager to play against teams in other pools who had a bye in order to build upon their own skill level against teams of varying abilities. The team consisted of Lucy Roberts, Haylee Burton, Paycee Cubby, Jordan Ross, Mackenzie Schultz, Paris Wall, Jordi Petty and Brianna Walden. Best and fairest on the day was awarded to Lucy Roberts.

T20 ING Cricket On the 28th March Dubbo College South

Campus’ Cricket Team competed in the

T20 ING Cricket competition. The team

played 2 games on the day with their first

game against Wellington High School.

South Campus got off to a good start

with Jayden Blake and Aeddan Todhunter

scoring 38 runs for the first wicket. James

Finch (28 runs including 2 sixes), Jesse

Spang (18 runs), Mitchell Harvey (11

runs) kept the runs ticking over. Nisarg

Amin (11n.o.) and Mack Shipp (7 n.o.)

helped lift the total to 8-132 off their 20

overs. Aeddan Todhunter (1-3 off 3

overs) and Tom Shields (1-6 off 2 overs)

bowled tightly in the start of the innings

to keep Wellington to 3-29 off 9 overs.

Nisarg Amin came on in the twelfth over

and bowled incredibly well to end up

with the figures of 4-4 off 2 overs. This

restricted Wellington to be all out for 60

in the 18th over.

In Game two, Dubbo College South Cam-

pus came up against St Johns College.

South struggled early due to tight bowl-

ing from the St. John’s opening bowlers

and lost Aeddan Todhunter when the

score was 19. Jayden Blake batted ex-

tremely well and scored an impressive 54

runs and was assisted by Mitchell Lincoln

(14 runs) to get South’s total to 93 off the

allotted 20 overs. St. John’s were well

contained by Aeddan Todhunter (1-8 off

3 overs) and Jayden Blake (1-16 off 3

overs) to be 2-25 off 6 overs. St. John’s

batter Tom Coady batted extremely well

for 39 runs and nearly saw his team

home until Jacob Fisher bowled him

when the scores were tied. St John’s won

the match in the 17th over.

School community engaged in lifelong learning

Under 14’s Buckley Shield team on a winning streak Game 1 On Thursday 16th March the Dubbo South Campus Buckley Shield Rugby League team travelled to Forbes High school to compete in round one of this knockout competition. From the outset both forward packs were very willing in both attack and defence, neither side giving an inch. Liam Deeves, Brad Deveigne and Nat Lindsay led the way for South in the middle and it became clear that the contest needed to be opened up through the backs. In the 13th minute the Forbes backline did spring into action and our line was breached for the first points of the game. This was quickly followed by an impressive 40 metre sprint through numerous defenders by Hunter Longhurst, who managed to score under the posts. Another try was scored by both teams leaving the halftime score at 10 points all. As the tension built in the second half, the tireless work of our forwards finally paid dividends as a barnstorming Liam Deeves crashed over next to the posts, taking the score to 14 points all. With the Forbes resolve heavily dented, South made deep inroads into enemy territory from the restart. With the fulltime siren seconds away, Mitchell Harvey used his size and strength to wrestle his way over the line, breaking the hearts of the Forbes players and crowd. This try was unable to be converted, however Dubbo South had run out very worthy winners 20 points to 14. In exceptionally trying conditions all players are to be congratulated for their outstanding efforts.

Game 2 On Friday the 31st March the Dubbo South Campus Buckley Shield Rugby League team competed against Canowindra in round two of the Buckley Shield Knockout Competition. South Campus was a much bigger and physical side than Canowindra. The team stuck to the game plan and constructed a very clinical performance to overcome their opposition in a 52 to 4 win. The sportsmanship, care and courtesy shown to a much smaller and junior opposition was an absolute credit to Dubbo College South Campus players. Best players from the game included Liam Deaves, Mitchell Harvey, Nat Lindsay and Trae Daley.

Successful learning in dynamic, well managed classrooms

Term 1 7 April 2017

Mathematics We are finally at the end of Term 1, and what a term it has been in the Maths faculty. However, it is looking to be just as busy going into Term 2. This term has seen Year 7 completing their Fractions, Decimals and Percentages topic. They have learnt about negative numbers and how to correctly perform operations involving fractions and decimals. Year 8 have been revising for their Term 1 assessment task, which is based on Algebra, Equations, Indices and Integers. They have also completed two topic tests on Indices, Integers and Algebra. Year 9 and 10 are split into three pathways (5.1, 5.2 and 5.3) based on effort and ability in Mathematics. As a result, students have been able to learn mathematical concepts that are appropriate to their ability and learn at a pace that is suitable for them. Just a reminder to parents that calculators are a necessary item for students to be successful in Mathematics. They are available for purchase at the school if your child does not have one yet. NAPLAN will be happening in Term 2, Week 3. The Numeracy test has a non-calculator section and a calculator section. However, the school will not be providing calculators for students. Please ensure your child comes equipped for these tests. The Australian Mathematics Competition and ICAS Mathematics tests are coming up soon. We are encouraging as many students as possible to enter these tests. There will be a small cost involved and more information will be available early Term 2. Have a safe and happy holiday full of chocolate, laughter and sleep ins.

Term 1 7 April 2017

CAREERS The Academy of Interactive Entertainment visited South Campus

on the 10th May and introduced 50 of our students to a free

software program used for gaming development. Students learnt

how to design a 3D level playable environment, inserting a variety

of land features and designing an attractive backdrop for the game

they were working toward. The workshop was very engaging and

quite inspiring. Job prospects from these types of course are 3D

Gaming Developer/Simulator Designer (Military, PO, Mines,

Medical procedures)/ Advertising/ Town Planner/ Design

Visualisation. All jobs that are becoming more and more

fashionable. Thanks to Miss Hesh for your organisation.

The Defence Force had representatives attend our campus for an

information session on the 22nd March. Forty two students

attended from Yr 8 to 10 and were very impressive with their

behaviour and questions. It was great to see so many who are

seriously considering their future opportunities

Get Real Lessons were completed with Year 10 ready for the Get

Real assembly which they all attended on the 30th March. All

students participated with maturity and will hopefully (if not

already) start to Get Real about their future aspirations. We are

still trying to complete the Year 10 interviews, asking them to

think about what is available to them in the future and how we

can assist them to achieve their goals.

Sydney Rural Health opened their doors for a “Pathway to

Medicine” visit. There were seventeen college participants who

participated enthusiastically and all looked the part in their scrubs.

The students were spoken to re pathways to medicine and

experienced theatre practices with a manikin and equipment. A

very informative experience thanks to the Sydney Rural Health

team and especially Dr Lars Newman (an ex Dubbo student, then

teacher and now Doctor)

Tutors from Sydney Uni are working with Colleges staff to assist

some students improve their NAPLAN skills. If your child is not

involved in this program, we highly recommend they access the

ASTAR.TV on line tutorial service. See flier in newsletter. It

connects students with subject experts through Sydney Uni and

allows for the uploading of essay/drafts with quizzes available in a

number of study areas.

What’s coming up? 9th and 10th May: Good First Impressions Workshop- aimed at

Yr 10 and 11 young ladies. The workshop will include makeup

application, appropriate dress for work, interview practice,

dinner table etiquette etc. It has been very successful in the

past and we look forward to another pleasant couple of days.

16th May: We have a performance company booked for Yr 7

students to hopefully start them thinking about their future

options. We anticipate all of our Yr 7 cohort to attend. It will be

in the school hall and has no cost.

“Aim Higher is a dynamic., hard hitting 45 minute high energy

“magazine style” interactive performance that uses humour,

music, multi-media and popular culture to engage, inspire and

inform Year 7 students about the many different progression

routes into tertiary education”

Anytime: *The Australian Air Force Cadets are advertising for

students in the Dubbo area to join their Cadet program. They

are “currently looking for students who are prepared to take up

a challenge and undertake activities outside their normal

school and social life who would like to learn what leadership is

about and what it means to be part of a team that

accomplishes tasks and goals that they are set”

This is a great opportunity for students who are not necessarily

into sports and would benefit from a team environment. It also

will expose them to a number of skill building exercises,

enhance their communication skills and introduce them to

other local students. A successful cadet would develop the

experience and skills to create a great portfolio/resume. See

me for more information.

CAPA News

This week saw the three campuses come together with their band and each groups to have workshop days that are developing skills as well as preparing for the upcoming Centenary of Education Celebrations on 18th to 23rd April. We were proud to have Mr Gorrie come and visit, as he not only enjoyed listening to two performances by the band on Tuesday, he also conducted one very briefly to the great amusement of the students. My great thanks go to the Music staff; Michelle O'Callaghan, Alice Maher and Mr Billiards who worked tirelessly with the hardworking students all day and after school. More acknowledgment is also needed for a CAPA staff member whose impact is still being felt as the Mural Group works are being erected during this term.

The Mural group led by Ms Radnidge needs to be further affirmed for their impressive beautiful works that now span the entire length of the quad. One up in the canteen and 4 new impressive works up in the wall of A block. I love that in more and more spaces in the school ones’ eye is drawn to the creative inspiriting works of students and obvious dedication of staff to the beautification of the school grounds

One of our students from Year 8 Visual Arts classes has been short listed to possibly receive a prize for the “Waste to Art” exhibition at the Western Plains Cultural Centre! I could not be more proud of the hard work and creativity that has gone into all of the works we have sent to the gallery. The opening is at 2pm on 8th April.

More works will be on show at the Centenary Open Day at South Campus on the 22nd April along with artmaking from Year 7 and the elective Visual Arts Classes, Photography and Digital Media. Everyone is welcome to visit these and the Music and Drama displays.

Term 1 7 April 2017

English Faculty

It’s been full steam ahead right up to the end of term with students completing assessment tasks in the final weeks of Term 1. All students who submitted their first assessment task on time and completed all requirements to the best of their ability are to be commended for their efforts. We are in the midst of collating data concerning achievement in assessment tasks and students who obtained significant results will be recognised and acknowledged in the coming weeks. Parents and Carers of students who did not complete and submit assessment tasks will be notified by mail. All students are expected to complete all assessment tasks. Students seeking extensions or submitting appeals need to follow the Assessment Task Policy as outlined in each assessment booklet. These will not be granted unless the appropriate paper work is completed. These forms can be obtained from the English staffroom.

The big news in the last few weeks has been the amazing

picture books that have been created by Year 8 English classes.

Students have been studying Anthony Browne’s picture book

“Piggybook” and learning how visual techniques are used to

convey meaning. For their assessment task, students were

required to write and illustrate their own picture books

concerning one of the themes presented in “Piggybook”.

Thanks to the extra work and dedication of their English

teachers, many classes were provided with the opportunity to

visit stage 1 classes around our local primary schools and read

their creations to stage 1 students. All students enjoyed this

process and it was a great chance to strengthen the links

between primary and secondary and give our students the

chance to participate in an authentic assessment process. Well

done to all involved and a special thanks to Orana Heights

Public School, Dubbo Public School and Dubbo South Public

School for being involved and sharing their classrooms with

our year 8 students and English teachers.

We look forward to many exciting events next term that will

continue to make English a fun and exciting subject where

students learn new ways to express themselves and be

creative whilst interacting with the world around them.

Future events for the calendar include:

9th-11th May Year 7 and 8 NAPLAN testing

15th May Plain English Public Speaking

Regional Final

22nd May Bell Shakespeare Performance for

Year 7

Looking forward to sharing

our experiences with you

all.

Wishing everyone a happy

School community engaged in lifelong learning

Interview 1—Mr Karakasch Are there any interesting thing happening in the TAS department in the future? There are many interesting things happening now and in the future for the TAS department. We are looking to develop students who are innovative and creative problem solvers. We are no longer just about “making stuff” and ‘ cooking stuff”, and that’s the challenge for the TAS faculty for 2017, to shed that old perception. Design and innovation is now our core business.

What is each year making in the TAS department currently? TAS ranges from textiles, food tech, industrial tech, Agriculture and information technology. We have moved away from old projects like the “pencil box” and we are now focusing on individual design projects, where students from 1 to 10 take ownership and creative license. Food technology has always suffered from the ‘we get to cook’ attitude. Food technology is really about food science, where we explore topics such as food nutrition and properties, very important for students who are into making healthy food choices.

Are there any students who would be recognised for their work in TAS? There are too many students who actively contribute to the positive learning environments of our TAS electives to mention in such a small space. But I would like to acknowledge Harley Hudson of year 9 who has helped us gain show quality chickens and ducks for our booming Ag plot , which is going through a transformation in 2017.
