Denver K Jason Elam currently holds the NFL record for most consecutive PATs with 406. Furthermore, his 63 yard field goal against the Jacksonville Jaguars (10/25/98) tied the NFL’s mark for longest field goal made (Tom Dempsey; N.O. Saints; 11/8/70 vs. Detroit). In contrast, Titans K Gary Anderson is playing his 23rd NFL season and ranks first on the NFL’s all-time scoring list with 2,421 points and in games played in league history (351) . lWR Derrick Mason (1,055) and Drew Bennett (1,171) can become the third receiving tandem in franchise history to register 1,100- receiving yards if Mason collects 45 receiving yards, joining Charles Henningan(1,746)/Bill Groman(1,175) in ‘61 and Haywood Jeffires(1,181)/Drew Hill(1,109) in ‘91. lThere are four members on the Titans and Broncos coaching staffs who played on or coached on teams which won NCAA national titles. Titans head coach Jeff Fisher was a defensive back on the University of Southern California squad which won the national title in 1979. Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan served on the coaching staffs of Oklahoma (1975) and Eastern Illinois (1978) when both squads won their national titles. Denver’s Ronnie Bradford suited up for the Colorado Buffalos when they shared the national title with Notre Dame in 1989. Titans special teams coach Alan Lowry played on the Texas Longhorns national title team in 1970. lTitans QB Billy Volek can break the NFL record that he shares with Phil Simms (NY Giants), Dan Fouts (San Diego Chargers) and Dan Marino (Miami Dolphins) if he can record his third consecutive game with at least 400-passing yards Denver. The Oilers would go on to win that game as Chris Chandler threw for three touch- downs in the game which saw both Terrell Davis (110 yards on 19 carries) and Houston’s Rodney Thomas (104 yards on 13 carries) top the century mark. 49ers Background -When the 1992 NFL season began for the San Francisco 49ers , two members of head coach George Seifert’s staff were current Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan (offensive coordinator) and Titans head coach Jeff Fisher (secondary coach). Both head coaches served on the 49ers coaching staff during the 1992-93 seasons, both of which saw the squad lose to the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game. Two years later (1995), they were each named head coaches for their respective teams. More importantly, the Packers were held to five rushingyards in the first half, their lowest output since they only gained4 yards in the first half against Minnesota (10/21/01).Welcome Back-DE Kevin Carter tied his career-high for sacks in agame (3) when he stopped Bears QB Craig Krenzel three times(11/14). It tied his previous high when he was a member of the St.Louis Rams (see Titans Sack Machine).

Against the Pass-In consecutive games against Jacksonville(11/21) and Chicago (11/14), the Titans allowed QB’s Craig Krenzeland David Garrard to throw for a combined 245 yards, zero touch-down passes, and three interceptions for a 32.8 passer rating.Double-Duece-CB Andre Dyson intercepted two passes againstBears QB Craig Krenzel (11/14) to increase his season total to a team-high four picks. It marked the first time in his career he posted two picksin one game and most importantly, tied his career-mark for picks in aseason from last year when he also had four.Cougar Perfect- In just his second start in place of injured LanceSchulters, S Lamont Thompson intercepted Green Bay Packersfuture Hall of Fame QB Brett Favre twice in the Titans 48-27 victory onMonday Night Football (10/11). Feeley. The three picks against BrettFavre were the most this season and most since he threw three picksagainst Detroit last season (11/27). The three picks in the seasonopener were the most ever by an Oilers/Titans defense in seasonopener’s during the Jeff Fisher era, toppping the two interceptionsin season openers against Donovan McNabb of the PhiladelphiaEagles (2001) and Jeff Blake of the Cincinnati Bengals (1999). Interceptions High-S Scott McGarrahan recorded his first intercep-tion in his seven-year career when he picked off David Carr of theHouston Texans in last week’s game.

WINNING IN DECEMBER

The Tennessee Titans have one game remaining on their Decemberschedule this season to improve on their previous record of 19-9 dur-ing games played in December since the start of the 1998 season. Inpreparing for the Broncos this week, the Titans hope they can recordtheir second win under head coach Jeff Fisher against Denver, a teamthe Houston Oilers defeated, 42-33 in his first season as head coachof the franchise in 1995.The Titans are just one of two teams in the NFL who has record-ed 20 wins during this time frame and are only one game behindthe first place Green Bay Packers, whose final December game ofthe 2004 regular season will be against Minnesota next week. The Titans 20-9 mark translates into a winning percentage of .689, amark that ranks among the best when you consider only five teamshave a winning percentage of .650 or better entering this week’s finalDecember game across the league. The Titans are hoping to win each of the last two games of the seasonand what better place to do it than in front of your home fans. If theTitans can win against Denver combined with a Packers loss atMinnesota, then they would end the regular season tied for first placeon the list for wins in December since the start of the 1998 season.

In their setback to the Chiefs last week, the Broncos scored sevenpoints, which came on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Jake Plummer toRod Smith. In taking a closer look at the Broncos first quarter pointtotal in their last four games, they have held without a point in threeof those games.

As for the Titans, they have only have been defeated six timessince November 3rd, 2002 when their defense has preventedopponents from scoring a touchdown in the first quarter. Let’s take a closer look and see how the Titans have fared whenopponents have been held to three or fewer points since theirmatchup against the Indianapolis Colts on November 3, 2002.

The Tennessee Titans recorded their fifth game of the season inwhich it has controlled the clock for more than 35:00 when theylost to the Oakland Raiders last week. Despite the setback, theteam held on to the ball for 35:11, the team’s second consecutiveweek in which their time of possession figure was more than 35:00 hav-ing controlled the clock for 37:59 against the Kansas City Chiefs(12/13).In this their third nationally televised game of the season, it seems safeto say the Titans will once again score alot of points and control the clockhaving accomplished the feat in each of their previous two televisiongames versus Kansas City and Green Bay.The Titans have had three games where they have controlled the clockfor more than 37:00, two of those games coming in consecutive weeksagainst the San Diego Chargers (37:13; 10/4) and Green Bay Packers(38:00; 10/11). In defeating the Green Bay Packers that night 48-21, theTitans controlled the clock for 38:00 in the game, their best effort of theseason in terms of time management. The 38:00 time of possession against the Packers resulted into 48points, their highest point total since scoring 47 points at PittsburghJan. 2, 2000. The last time the franchise posted 48 points was in a 48-17 victory at home vs. Cincinnati 14 years ago (10/14/90). Additonally, the 38:00 time of possession helped the Titans score the most pointsever by the Packers at Lambeau Field. The 48 points were also themost allowed by Green Bay at home since Detroit's 52-17 win at oldCity Stadium in 1952.

In their last two games against Kansas City and Oakland, theTitans have scored 42 combined points, rushed for 151 yardsand accounted for 662 net total yards in the first half. After fourteen games of the regular season, Tennessee has postedseven games where the team as finished the game with a time ofposession better than 32:00, something the squad has done in eachof the last four games against Oakland Kansas City (37:59),Indianapolis (33:05, 12/5) and Houston (32:55). The Titans are currently second in the NFL in terms of time of pos-session, having averaged 32:47 for each game. They trail only thePittsburgh Steelers (33:55) on the list and are one of only threeteams who have controlled the clock for more than 32:00 enteringWeek 15 (Kansas City;32:12). By the way, this week’s opponent, theDenver Broncos have controlled the clock for 31:47 on the sea-son.The Titans finished the 2003 campaign ranked second (Denver,33:53) in the AFC and tied for second in the NFL (Minnesota) interms of controlling the clock as they held on to the ball for an aver-age of 32:52. In 2002, the Titans were tied with the PittsburghSteelers for having the top time of possession in the NFL, averaging32:47 per game. Denver has been one of the most effective running teams this sea-son. Since the Titans are ranked 16th in the league against the run, they must contain the Broncos high powered rushing attack and holdon to the ball in order to defeat Denver.

Brown has three 100-yard games which saw the ColoradoBuffalo total 100 yards before halfItime, hitting the 100-yard markagainst Miami (9/11),104 yards against Indianapolis (9/19) and103 yards against Green Bay before a nationally televised audienceon Monday Night Football (10/11).The Broncos have allowed four opposing backs from the AFC totop the century mark as well as Atlanta Falcons quarterbackMichael Vick earlier in the season. Last week saw the ChiefsLarry Johnson (151 yards; 12/5) top the century mark againstDenver. Overall, the Chiefs Priest Holmes (151 yards, 9/12) RudiJOhnson of the Cincinnati Bengals (119, 10/25), Vick (115 yards;10/31) and LaDainian Tomlinson of the San Diego Chargers (113yards; 12/5) have each surpassed 100 yards versus the Broncos. One other inteteresting statistic which shows how well the Titansoffensive line is doing this season is to compare where the 1,717yards ranks to the rest of the Oilers/Titans teams during the JeffFisher era after 14 games. The yardage total after fourteen games is the best performance since1998 when the Oilers squad had run for 1,803 yards under Fisher. Itis still the fourth highest in the Fisher era.

GREAT WALL OF NASHVILLE/RUSHING ATTACK Last week loss to the Oakland Raiders saw the Titans rushing attack onlytotal 61 yards on 19 carries. However, the fact the team was behind earlyin the game which forced the team to throw the ball throughout the courseof the game.Nevertheless, the depleted offensive line, which saw starter JustinHartwig miss the game because of an injury, hopes to rebound from lastweek and regroup when they welcome the Denver Broncos and theireighth ranked defense to the Coliseum this week. When the Titans last played in front of a nationally televised audience twoweeks ago against Kansas City, Chris Brown and Antowain Smith com-bined to lead the attack, as Tennessee ran for 163 yards on 33 carriesand one touchdown. Brown rushed for 91 yards in the first half before leaving the gamewith an injury. Smith came in and continued running the ball effec-tivley as the Titans went down to the wire against the Chiefs, whowon by eleven points in the gameInjuries have decimated the entire offensive line this season asreserves Eugune Amano, Jacob Bell and and second-year playerTodd Williams have been forced into action on the offensive line. The offensive line hopes it will see the return of veteran Brad Hopkinswho broke his right hand against the Chicago Bears earlier in the season. The team has witnessed veteran Jason Mathews start at both left tackleand right guard in place of Hopkins and Benji Olson, who was declaredinactive against Houston in Week 6 (10/17). Even though the line has been plagued by injuries, the offensive linehas paved the way for Brown to collect 1,076 yards on the season, which currently ranks eighth in the AFC. Considering Brown hasmissed four games and two entire second halfs because of injury, his yardage total is an example of how well the o-line has been doingas a group up front. He has run for six 100-yard game on the season and seemed des-tined for his seventh against the Chiefs until his toe injury sent himto the sidelines in the second quarter. When Brown could not start because of a toe injury at Jacksonville(11/21) and Houston (11/28), Smith ran well behing the offensive linegaining 95 and 90 yards, respectively. In the Titans last two games against Kansas City and Indianapolis, the Titans rushing attack has combined for 278 yards on 58 carries, which averages to 4.8 yards per carry.

Rien Long improved his sack total to five on the season when hetotaled two sacks against the Oakland Raiders in last week’s setbackto the Silver and Black. The former Outland Trophy winner fromWashington State had his first multi-sack game of his career and nowhas six sacks in his brief career with the the Tennessee Titans.Although the defense is not familar with Denver Broncos signalcaller Jake Plummer, the defense hopes it can match the successKansas City performed last week when the team sacked Plummersix times in the 45-17 victory at Arrowhead Stadium. Not only wasPlummer sacked six times but the Broncos top rusher, TatumBell, was limited to only 50 yards. In the last two games where the Broncos have been defeated,Plummer has been sacked five times, twice against the San DiegoChargers two weeks ago. Despite the fact the team has lost six games, the offensive line is known for giving Plummer ample time to throw theball. This season, he has thrown for 3,540 yards and 23 touchdowns. The Titans defense has recorded nine games where they have regis-terd two or more sacks, five coming in their Week 10 contest againstChicago (11/14) and four versus Cincinnati (10/31) in Week 8.Three of the five sacks against Chicago were credited to KevinCarter, who became the first Titans defensive player since CarlosHall to post three or more sacks in a regular season game. Hall accomplished the feat against Donovan McNabb of thePhiladelphia Eagles when the Titans posted a 27-24 win in the 2002season opener (9/8).The Titans defense hopes it can provide enough pressure soPlummer can not match his 499-yard performance against theAtlanta Falcons, which still is the most passing yards by a quar-terback this season.Tennessee has had only one game where it did not record a sack thisseason and that came against Brett Favre of the Green BayPackers, who despite not being sacked threw three interceptionsen route to the Titans convincing 48-27 win on Monday NightFootball.

TITANS SACK MACHINE

The Broncos are known for getting on the scoreboard early andhave scored 78 points this season in the first quarter. In order tooffset this offensive point total by Denver, the Titans must be ableto stop the run and force Plummer into misakes.Tennessee has garnered 30 sacks this season and is 10 shy frommatching their success from the 2003 regular season when their 38sacks ranked tied for fourth in the AFC (Buffalo) and tied for ninth(Philadelphia) in the NFL. The team hopes it can continue their success this season gettingto the quarterback as it ranks fifth in the NFL with a total of 240sacks since the start of the 1999 season.

THE ROOKIES

As a result of several injuries to key offensive and defensive players, the Tennessee Titans 2004 draft class has been thrust into action andhave gotten a lot of game experience in this their first NFL seasons. The rookie’s presence is most notably on the defense, which hasseen six of their first year players either start and/or see a majority ofplaying time on several defensive packages. In last week’s game at Oakland, five rookies were on the fieldwhen the offensive and defensive teams took the field. Leading the way is Jacob Bell, who played primarily at tackle atMiami (Ohio) but hasbeen forced to start each of the last 13 games atleft guard in place of veteran Zacch Piller. Bell has been in everygame this season where Titans back Chris Brown topped the 100-yard mark as well as in each of the last three games which has seenBilly Volek throw for 11 combined touchdowns. Starting alongside Bell against the Raiders was Eugene Amano, whowas selected in the seventh round out of Southeast Missouri State.Because of a severe injry to Justin Hartwig, Titans offensive linecoach Mike Munchak helped prepare Amano throughout the weekleading up to the game. Although the Titans lost, Amano did playevery snap at center, a position he excelled in at SEMO for he wasnamed the Dave Rimington Award winner, which goes to the top cen-ter in college football. The bulk of the draft was focused on improving the defensiveunit as the Titans selected four players on the d-line, each ofwhom are known for their pass rushing exploits. After 14 games, the Titans have three rookies who are among the top five insacks, the leader rookie sack master just happens to be theyoungest player on the roster. Randy Starks (21) started his seventh game of the season at defen-sive tackle, primarily because the team has lost Albert Haynesworthto an elbow injury in the last five games. Against the Raiders lastweek, Starks helped Tennessee with its only interception of the gameafter he deflected a Kerry Collins pass at the line of scrimmage rightinto the hands of linebacker Keith Bulluck.Starks has 4.5 sacks and has his eyes set on making the All-Rookieteam. Despite the fact three other defensive lineman were selected inthe first round (Tommie Harris, Kendrick Udeze, Will Smith), Starks’productivity is warranted for cementing his name on the team.He ranks eighth on the team in tackles and currently ranks fourthamong all rookies selected in this year’s class in sacks, a half-sack behind Udeze and one sack in front of Harris. He had sixconsecutive games where he had at least five tackles, two of whichsaw the Maryland Terrapin record seven tackles against Indianapolisand Kansas City in consecutive games.Furthermore, he has either forced or recovered a fumble and/orinterception in each of the last three games. Finally, he is one ofonly four players who has registered multiple-sack games thisseason, having recorded two sacks against Houston (11/28).

Another rookie who has played extremely well is Travis LaBoy, whowho is fourth on the team in sacks with three-and-a-half (3.5). Heregistered two fourth quarter sacks against the Vikings when hestopped Daunte Culpepper in the Titans setback earlier in the seasonat Minnesota (10/24), a game which LaBoy had a season-high seventackles.Against the Raiders last week, he was credited with two tackles andone quarterback pressure and enters this week’s game against theBroncos with 25 tackles and seven quarterback pressures.DE Antwan Odom posted 21 career sacks which ranks tied for fifthon the University of Alabama’s all-time list. He accounted for fourtackles in the loss to Oakland but did record a half-sack in the twoprevious contests against Kansas City and Indianapolis. On the sea-son, the former first-team SEC standout from Alabama has reg-istered 34 tackles, 2.0 sacks and nine quarterback pressures. The team inserted Bo Schobel, who finished his career at TexasChristian University with 28.5 sacks, 17 of which came during hissenior season, into the starting lineup for the second consecutiveweek when the defense took the field against the Silver and Black lastweek.Schobel finished the game with four tackles but has impressedseveral members of the coaching staff since he was taken off ofthe team PUP list on November 8.Two rookie cornerbacks, Michael Waddell and Rich Gardner, have seen limited action but both have picked off one pass thisseason and are regulars on special teams.Entering Week 15 of the season, Starks leads all rookie defensivetackles in sacks and is determined along with LaBoy to finish theregular season on a strong note as the Titans face the Broncosand Detroit Lions in the last two games of the season.

DEFENSE AGAINST THE RUN/FEWEST 100-YARD RUSHERS

The Titans success against the run has been well documented over thelast 10 years since Jeff Fisher became head coach of the franchise. Thedefensive squad was first in the NFL (1st in the AFC) in rushingdefense. He has directed a defensive unit which has been in the Top10 against the run in nine out of the last 10 years. Although theTitans are ranked 16th heading into this week’s game againstDenver, their defense did shut down the Oakland Raiders rushing attacklast week, limiting the Silver and Black to 57 yards on 22 carries and notouchdowns via the run, something Fisher hopes will continue when thedefense takes the field this week, especially because the Titans areranked fifth in the NFL since the start of the 1995 season havingallowed 102 rushing touchdowns.

The Broncos have been known for their ability to run the ball under MikeShanahan, whose teams have seen five different running backs run formore than 1,000-yards since he became head coach in 1995. The latestback to top the 1,000-yard mark under Shanahan is Reuben Droughns, who currently has 1,073 yards after 14 games. In fact, the former OregonDuck is four yards ahead of Titans second-year back Chris Brown on theseason. He has six 100-yard games this season, three of which came in con-secutive games against Carolina (193, 10/10), Oakland (176, 10/17)and Cincinnati (110,10/25). The last three came in consecutiveweeks as well, totaling 120 versus New Orleans (11/21), 166 againstOakland (11/28) and 102 at San Diego (12/5).In preparing for their ESPN matchup against Denver, the Titans defense-hopes it will prevent Droughns from recording his seventh 100-yardgame of the season. Entering this week’s game, the Titans defense hasallowed the fewest 100-yard rushers in the NFL since the start of the1996 season having allowed 20 backs to surpass the century mark, something only the Pittsburgh Steelers can lay claim as to having doneas well.

The offseason departure of Justin McCareins forced DrewBennett to take over as the Titans number two receiver.Entering their first season together as the Titans one-two punch,Derrick Mason and Bennett hope to continue where the 2003 sea-son left off and have demonstrated that they too can rank among thebest receiving tandem in the NFL.Despite the fact Bennett missed four games last season (left calfinjury), the former UCLA standout accounted for 32 receptions, oneshy of his career-high set in 2002. This season, Bennett has set career-highs in every categoryand has caught eight combined touchdowns in the last threegames, which ties Jerry Rice for most touchdowns caught in athree-game period, something Rice did in 1987 and 1993. Moreimportantly, the former UCLA Bruin leads the AFC with 1,171yards on the year after posting 504 last season. Mason ranks first in the NFL in receptions with 88 and is onpace to record his second consecutive season in which he has90 receptions. The starter in last year’s Pro Bowl needs eightmore receptions to increase his season total to 96, which wouldset a new-career mark for the Michigan State standout. It is safe to say they are probably one of most underrated receivingtandems (wide receivers only) in the NFL. Entering this week’sgame against the Broncos, Mason and Bennett rank second amongthe NFL’s Top 5 receiving tandems (wide receivers only) in recep-tions.

Despite the fact the Titans duo ranks second in the NFL among receiv-er tandem in receptions behind St. Louis entering this week’s game atOakland, Mason and Bennett became the first Oilers/Titans receiv-er tandem to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in the same seasonsince the 1991 season when Haywood Jeffires (1,181) and DrewHill (1,109) accomplished the feat. Ironically, both Jeffires (1,048) andHill (1,019) reached the 1,000-yard plateau in 1990 when the HoustonOilers finished the regular season 9-7 and advanced to the postseason. It is the fifth time in franchise history that a receiving tandem accom-plished the feat in the same year. The first time two receivers topped1,000-yards on the season came in 1961 when Charles Henniganand Bill Groman of the Houston Oilers in the AFL totaled 1,746 and1,175 yards respectively, helping the Oilers conclude their secondseason 10-3-1 and in first place in the Eastern Division.

Let’s look at the receivers in Oilers/Titans history who reachedthe 1,000-yard plateau in the same season.
