TENBY SCHOOLS PENANG E- NEWSLETTER Issue #37 14 th July 2017 Message from Campus Principal Mr. Iain Sallis Dear Parents After almost a year as Campus Principal it gives me time to reflect on achievements and success’s across the campus. A time to ensure we are on target for the next stages of our development to continue our upward trend. The Senior Leadership have just completed a 30000 word document on our schools for Council of International School Accreditation. The review process covers 8 areas of school ranging from teaching and learning, grounds and maintenances to health and safety. It has taken us 3 months to complete and also gains the views of teachers, students and parents. We feel this is the most comprehensive review system in the world and it will provide us with a great platform for future improvement. The CIS review team will visit us in October 2017 and will quality assure the schools development plan and evidence. You can visit their website on http://www.cois.org/ for more information. At this time Tenby Schools Penang is in a good place, our numbers have risen significantly over the past 3 months and we are projecting our potential highest numbers ever in 2018. We have waiting lists in both National and Secondary schools. The new opening of the Year 5/ 6 class is a sign of our popularity and expansion vision. As you know we are committed to customer satisfaction and ensuring parent feedback is dealt with quickly and clearly. Our new opening times for Early Years programme increasing to 14:30 pm will provide better value for money. The Library opening hours increasing to 07:30am to 16:45 daily will improve the experience for students. New plans for teachers work spaces and classroom improvements will improve the experience for our staff. Our staff retention rates are very good compared with other schools on the island. Our fee increases have been kept to a minimum compared to some of the other schools on the island. We have so much to look forward to in 2017 and 2018. As with any big institution it’s important we celebrate as a staff community and we hold our staff annual dinner at the Rasa Hotel next week. We will be saying goodbye to Ms Marian and thank her for 4 years as Head of Primary International. You will be missed. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all contributors and sponsors for the event. See below for a list of sponsors. This year we will have our biggest support from sponsors and local business’s than ever. I have experienced an amazing first year at Tenby Schools Penang. Our community is special and I believe we are the best school on the island. We have supportive parents, special teachers, amazing students. However none of this can be and will be achieved without us all working together. Although we have come far on our journey we still have a way to go and as a group we will get there! Happy Holidays! Holiday Maintenance Updates and School Improvements Over the long holiday break Mr Suhaili and his team have a number of improvements going ahead across the school. The entire swimming pool will be totally re- grouted and drained, new painting programme for all doors and frames, new improvements to Early Year area, new fans for drop off areas, sinks in art rooms, new signage’s and walls of fame, new cleaning facilities for canteen, new speakers for classrooms, new tents for pitches and cover for tennis court walkway, works on admissions office, new recycle bin programme, service air con units and create some new office spaces. Unbelievably this is only part of our service programme and we do envisage some works to over spill into September. Open Day Our next Open Day for prospective parents will be on Saturday 30 th September 2017. Our Open Day in June was a huge success and with our greatest number of applications forms signed. Remember keep spreading the word, most of our sign ups this term have been through word of mouth so thank you for continued support

Message for Head Of School

Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2017

Sri Tenby Primary and Secondary Schools celebrated Hari Raya on 29th June. The students and teachers put up entertaining performances which included Raya songs and dances

The Hari Raya celebration commenced with a short speech by the Head of Sri Tenby School. This was followed by presentations of songs by students and teachers. The students were entertained by the presentations.

A wide variety of delicious food from the traditional lemang and rending to pizza and cakes were served for lunch. Thanks to the generosity of parents the amount of food was more than sufficient.

We would like to acknowledge with thanks parents, teachers, students who have in one way or other contributed to the success of the event.

Presentations

The KSSR curriculum intends to impart 21st Century skills to our students. Students should be able to communicate and cooperate with others as a team and have skills like gathering information, analysing and thinking critically to problem solve.

In STPS we encourage our students to work in teams to carry out projects and other assignments. They are expected to present their finished work in class or school assembly.

Science

An active and engaging science lesson in progress around the school garden. What better way to teach the topic about plants than to let the students investigate, see and feel life samples of what they are learning. Such teaching approaches for the teaching of science are practised in our school. Students acquire knowledge, skills and the scientific methods. In that way they learn how to problem solve and be critical thinkers.

Scouts

The scouts are our active group in the school. During meetings they go through many activities that foster camaraderie, discipline and resilience. Photographs show them doing an activity named “Follow the Leader”.

Training with elements of fun helps them to learn better.

Visit to Old Folks’ Home

The Tenby Penang Student Leadership Council (TPSLC) members visited ‘The Little Sisters of the Poor’- an old folks’ home. The members of the Communities sub-group of the Student Council made the visit on 6th July.

We have never visited an old folks’ home before and all preconceived impressions were changed. We were a little apprehensive and nervous. The old people were friendly and extremely happy to see us. They were all smiles. There were some elderly folks who are in poor health but they did not let the disabilities and sickness take over their lives.

We had wonderful conversations with them and listened as they related stories of their lives. Their eyes lit up as they spoke and we realised that it did not take much to make old folks happy. Just lend them a listening ear. We learnt so much from them-from trials and pain during the Japanese occupation and children who abandoned them to friendship formed in the home.It is great to be able to bring joy just through the visit and yet be so much richer for the experience. We see life from a different perspective now- that simple things and kindness can bring happiness. The old folks showed us that life is what and how you make it out to be!

Behavioural management and motivational talk

Counsellors from the ‘Befrienders’ Penang ran a workshop on ‘Behavioural management and motivation’ for all students from STSS. Session 1 was on behavioural management for students from Forms 1 and 2. Session 2 was a motivation talk and workshop. The target audience was students from Forms 3 to 5. The speakers, created awareness that positive behaviour management will help students achieve their goals, be they academic or social ones. Workshop activities were designed to increase adaptive socially accepted behaviours. Students were motivated to enhance their self-belief and to act as their own learning agents to achieve goals important to them. Students learnt how to deal with failures and learn from their experiences.

MSSPP Chess Competition

Four Form 1 students from STSS participated in the MSSPP Chess Competition on 4th July. The students competed in the Under 15 category. Each competitor had to play a total of seven games.

The students had good exposure to state-run competition. The competition reinforced the concept of good sportsmanship - that losing to a better opponent is honourable. It also motivated them to train and step up their game for future competitions

WHAT A PERFORMANCE! Dear Parents, As we reach the end of another school year, I would like to say a big THANK YOU to all of our TIPS community members, children, parents and staff, for all of their support and effort towards making this another very successful year. We have ended this half of the term with some of our most successful events. The recent school production of THE ROCKY MONSTER SHOW was an outstanding success. The children excelled themselves as they performed for the first time at Penang Pac in front of a packed audience. This fantastic show involved every child in the school from Year 1- Year 6. The choir consisted of over 100 children, who sang and danced their hearts out to the exciting music.

The make-up and costume just added to the overall feel of professionalism. This, coupled with all the TIPS staff being so supportive of the children, enabled them to put on their best performance ever! Well done everyone! Regards Marian Bartlett (Head of TIPS)

Solo singing performances were fantastic throughout the show as we followed the story of two young scientists, Rebecca Shelly and Dan Stoker who joined a professor of rock and roll in his quest to create a super human performing group. At one point in the show there was a duet by singing monsters and an amazing performance by a reborn Elvis! We also were treated to a dance routine from 3 girls from Year 5. This truly was an exceptional performance and everyone at TIPS is so proud of their achievements.

To end off the year, Year 4 had a wonderful time last week visiting Taiping Zoo as part of their Language learning. They were able to identify all the animals and then practice using their Bahasa Malaysia when describing and explaining how they moved, ate and behaved.

A great day educational visit, enjoyed by all!

The dance floor was packed all evening as all the children from TIPS danced the night away at our End of Year Disco last night. The glitterball spinned as all the children and teachers danced to the fantastic music played by Mr DJ Donovan. Thank you to TSPA for organising the food and the staff for organising all the activities. A wonderful way to end an amazing school year!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It’s been rather quiet in TISS this week due to everyone stepping outside their comfort zones and learning outside of their classroom. The seven trips provided that have travelled to parts of Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam give opportunity for our students to develop their values of responsibility as they head off to look after themselves for a week, they challenge themselves to communicate with new people, speaking and listening to those around them, they become more independent having to make meeting points on time, arrange themselves for the day of activities and be vigilant to their new surroundings.

Trips beyond the classroom are invaluable and important for a young person’s development. Students are privileged to have teachers provide such opportunities to test and challenge them in such amazing environments whether it be on a surfboard in Phuket or at a museum in Singapore.

We look forward to hearing the stories and seeing the videos that the students will create for assembly on the last day!

And as we near our final assembly to mark the end of the school year it is an opportunity to reflect upon and celebrate the wonderful range of events and activities that make our school so special. All our successes to date have been as a result of the hard work of many people across our community and we thank everyone for making it all possible.

We are already planning for and looking forward to the new academic year. New students starting with us are invited for their induction at 11:00hrs on Monday 4 September. All returning students are expected to arrive on time [before 07:55hrs] to start their first day back on Tuesday 5 September, 2017. This will be a full day in school with students meeting their tutor and preparing for another year in which we raise expectations for students and staff alike.

Our TISS day will be as follows from September:

07:55 08:25 Tutor / Assembly / PSHE

08:25 09:45 Lesson 1

09:45 10:10 Break

10:10 11:30 Lesson 2

11:30 12:50 Lesson 3

12:50 13:40 Lunch

13:40 15:00 Lesson 4

15:10 16:10 CCA 1

16:20 17:20 CCA 2

There are many improvements that the changes to the timetable offers and this will provide many benefits to both students and staff including our ability to provide lunchtime clubs and activities which will provide many more social opportunities for everyone in TISS.

For those who are moving on, both staff and students, we thank you for your contribution and wish you well for the future path wherever it takes you.

Have a wonderful holiday.

Miss Liz

TENBY SCHOOLS ROCK CONCERT

The first ever Rock Concert featuring a “Battle of the Bands” hosting Tenby Ipoh, Tenby Miri, Tenby JB and of course Tenby Penang showed off musical talent from across Malaysia. The sell-out crowd were treated to night of entertainment and competition for the prestigious “Battle of the Bands” title.

Talent from across TISS saw the stage rock and students light up the night with their outstanding performances. The competition was of high calibre and although on this occasion Tenby Penang didn’t pick up the trophy, they will definitely be back next year to challenge for the top spot once again.

Well done to everyone, excellent performances all round!

MSSPP Netball

Our U18 and U15 netball won silverware at the recent MSSPP championships. Excellent defensive performances kept all their opponents at bay and hardly even allowed them to get close to the goal and with our attackers working well and scoring consistently once the ball got into the D ensured a gold for our U15 team.

The U18 team met some tough teams and they battled well on the court only to narrowly miss out on the top two positions, but they also walked away with a medal, and on this occasion it was bronze.

Well done to you all, the Tenby Tigers are on fire and are certainly feared by many teams across Penang. A fantastic season overall due to your hard work and commitment to training. Thank you to Ms Fumi for all her dedication to the netball. Roll on next season!

MUN Conference

Wow, we've finally come back down to earth after our incredible Model United Nations weekend, hosted by our very own TPMUN'17.

We had over 180 participants at the weekend from schools within Malaysia - Penang, Ipoh and KL, as well as participants from Indonesia and Pakistan. Overall Tenby Schools Penang won the Best Group Delegation award and numerous Tenby students won awards from their Councils. A special thank you to our Secretary Generals - Rian Yamazaki and Lee Wen Lynn for organising the event. We can't wait until next year! Year 10 Work Experience

Year 10 survived a week in the big wide world of employment just recently! All students organised their own place of work and got involved in a variety of different fields of industry. We had students representing Tenby all across Penang in hospitals, solicitor, banks, cafes and architect offices.

Talking to the students and through their reflection session it is clear that it was an extremely worthwhile experience. They were challenged in many different ways to step outside their comfort zones and develop skills and knowledge to complete their placement successfully. Many even said they wanted to do another week!

Everyone learnt something – even if it eliminated that particular job from what they thought they wanted to do for their future career!

Students are currently writing about their work experience placement in their English lessons and they will receive their certificates for successful completion that they can use as evidence in future sixth form, university and job applications and interviews.

Tenby Schools Penang winners: Best Delegate Award: Sean Choon (Y13) High Commendation Award: Tan Jia Yong (Y11) Vienna Tan (Y10) Most Outstanding Delegate Award: Garret Lim (Y11) Ooi Chiao Ling (Y11) Honorable Mention: Feungfa Charas (Y12) Ryan Ng (Y12) Bryan Ng (Y10)

Year 10 Careers Workshop

The year 10’s will continue with a careers focus as they take part in a careers workshop held by Ms Paula, our Head of Tenby Sixth Form and Information and Guidance. Students have already been introduced to a careers website and will delve further into the various careers and professionals in the session taking place on Wednesday morning.
