Mizuho Town Guide Koshinkan The former Hosobuchi home acquired by Mizuho has been refurbished into a community education center. The first floor has a tatami-style room for tea ceremonies and a coffee shop. The second floor has a large room for salon concerts and exhibitions. Located on the grounds is an old storehouse, which has a permanent exhibit of treasures owned by the Hosobuchi Family. Many birds such as kingfisher and spot-billed ducks can be seen. Natsu Matsuri (traditional summer festival) Every year in the middle of July, traditional floats and portable shrines are paraded through the town’s streets. The traditional festival music played on flutes and drums and the spiritual shrines combine to create an exciting festival atmosphere. Sakura Matsuri A cherry blossom festival that takes place every year in the beginning of April in Rokudoyama Park, a place known for its cherry blossoms. The festival has many attractions including a hiking rally. A look behind reveals a panoramic view of the town, Yokota Air Base at the end of street to east of town hall and Mount Fuji and the mountains of Okutama on the right. Ishihata-shindo Hiking Trail Containing a row of cherry trees in the vicinity of the 5th Elementary School, this trail is one of seven that lead to Mount Rokudo. The cherry trees bloom exquisitely in the spring. Many people use it for hiking. The other six trails have something different to offer and are worth a visit. Azusami Tenjin Shrine An old shrine that was registered with the Imperial Household in the Engi period, it was the main shrine for the Murayama district. According to its records, Kazusanosuke- takamochiou rebuilt it in 890. Officially recognized and authorized by the Edo Shogunate, it is steeped in history. Every spring, cherry trees along its approach create a beautiful tunnel of blossoms. Hiking trails on the northern side of Mount RokudoPark bring hikers through forests in the SayamaHills. Trees forming a tunnel that seems it wouldprotect hikers during light rainfall take on adifferent look each time. A river called Kanahori-zawa, the upper reaches of the Yanase River, runsin valley on the right side. This area is importantbecause it retains the appearance before theconstruction of Sayama Lake. Hikers arrive at thefoot of the Sayama Hills after walking through theSaitama Midorino-mori Museum walking paths.Here, a location where you can still see scenesfrom the past, you can walk leisurely and enjoy abeautiful view with gently sloping tea fields in theforeground. Hikers can also visit many places oflocal historical importance.

The tract of land that stretches from the hills southof Mount Rokudo is the Tokyo PrefectureNoyamakita Rokudoyama Park. This park, locatedon the western edge of the Sayama Hills, has atotal land area of 260 hectares and is theprefecture’s largest. It has forests, fields andnatural settings that strongly retain and aim topreserve remnants of country life from many yearsago. A trail running along a ridge encircles LakeSayama and provides access to many placeswithin the park. Its easily traversed trails haveample direction boards and rest rooms locatedalong the way. This course includes a hot spawhere hikers can relax.

A walk from the museumvisitors’ center through tea fieldsdown a farming road and athicketed path brings hikers tothe Nishikubo Marsh. This areahas marsh paddies where old-fashioned “kodaimai” r ice isgrown. Hikers can walk on a trailthat encompasses the marsh.

The road in front of the Koshinkan Community Center is theNikko-Kaido Road. While most people consider the road fromEdo (presently Tokyo) to Nikko via the Senju Bridge, Furukawaand Kanuma to be the Nikko-Kaido Road, this road is also calledthe Nikko Kaido Road because the Hachioji Sennin-doshin,protectors of Toshogu Shrine, traveled this route. Nishikubo-KannonThis temple houses a goddess of mercy to which people pray for safechildbirth. The tree which produces thatch on the temple grounds is moreabout 800 years old and has been designated anatural monument. A religious ceremony called“kanehari” takes place on the first day of eachmonth and August 17.Izumo-iwai ShrineSteeped in tradition, this shrine was the head ofthe five Iruma shrines classified in the Engishiki-jinmyocho, a list that rated shrines endorsed bythe Emperor during the Engi period. ThisMiyadera area is the birthplace of Sayama tea. Amonument that gives praise to this achievementhas been erected on the shrine grounds.

Fukushoji Temple ② Tarayo Holly Tree ③

Fukushoji Temple (left photo)Kinryu-zan Fukushoji is an old Rinzai Sect Zen templethat was founded more than 600 years ago. Itsheadquarters is Kenchoji Temple in Kamakura. Thepowerful local Murayama Tosanokami Clan restoredthe Kannon worship hall built halfway up the mountain.It is said the present structure was rebuilt in 1841. Builtin the unusual shumoku-zukuri style, the hall’s cofferedceiling has pictures of flowers, herbs, birds and wildcreatures and a thinly colored dragon.Tarayo Holly Tree (right photo)The temple grounds contain a rare holly tree. Back inthe days when there was no paper, people would writeletters on its leaves. It is said the word “hagaki,” whichmeans post card, was derived from this custom.

Musashi-murayama Municipal Noyamakita Park⑦

Visitors can fish in a pond in the park’s central area.Past the pond are rice paddies for hands-on learningthat are surrounded by woods famous for their dogtoothviolet colonies. Water from this valley eventually flowsinto the Karabori River. Incidentally, water exitsSayama Pond into theZanbori River, which flowsinto the Tama River, andthe Karabori River flowsinto the Arakawa River.Adjoining the park is theMusashi -murayama CityMuseum of Local Folkloreand Katakuri-no-yu, arecreational spa.

Enfukuji Temple ①

A newly erected dazzling gatewelcomes visitors to this temple.The grounds host a daruma dollmarket every January and ahozuki Chinese lantern plantmarket every June. Of the nineTokyo Daruma doll makers in theSan-Tama District, f ive arelocated in Mizuho. Although themarket at Enfukuji is small inscale, all Mizuho doll makersshow their wares. Mount Rokudo, which literally means six roads, wasnamed many years ago because a road that connectedwith the Joshu Region and six roads used by peoplewho lived in villages at the base of the Sayama Hillsmet at this location. Proceeding in the direction of theTakaneyama Hiking Trail from Deai-no-tsuji, bringshikers to the Koshinto (stone tower) (photo: Koshinto inthe vicinity of Deai-no-tsuji), which doubled as asignpost and still stands today surrounded by hackberrytrees (also located on the southern hiking route).

Saitama Midorino-mori Museum and Oyato Marsh①

Also known as yakiba, this location hasstone images of the six Jizo saviors ofthe helpless. Three pairs of jizo facedifferent directions. According to aninscription on the rear, they were erectedthrough donations collected byworshippers from four villages such asNakafuji, Yokota, Mitsuki and Kishi, whochanted Buddhist invocations after 51people died from dysentery, which ragedbetween August and November 1898,and were cremated at this location. Thepark office is located nearby.

This huge tree that stands 14meters tall and measures 2.1meters around at eye level is alocal attraction. It is said a smallshrine at the base of the tree waserected in the mid-Edo Period bythe Hosobuchi Family, one of thefirst settlers of the Mount Fujiarea, to enshrine its ancestors.Unti l recent, i t stood on thegrounds of a residence, but inrenovation work to make MountFuji Park, this tree was movedhere as a symbol of the park andhas been admired by people asG o r i n s a m a - n o - k a k i n o k i(persimmon tree).

farm residence from the mid-Edo Period isa visitors’ center at which people can tryvarious farming methods and learn aboutculture and the environment. Old-fashioned“kodaimai” rice is grown here and visitorscan plant, make scarecrows, harvest andexperience how people used to live in themountains.
