1 Introduction
1.1 What is TEMS Pocket?TEMS Pocket is a handheld tool for verification, maintenance, andtroubleshooting of mobile networks as well as for basic cell planning tasks.Built into a commercial mobile phone, TEMS Pocket collectsmeasurements and events and presents them on the device display. Themeasurements may be stored for later analysis in other products such asTEMS Discovery and TEMS Investigation. The combination of small sizeand powerful testing features makes TEMS Pocket a convenient tool forday-to-day monitoring of mobile networks. In addition, since the mobilestation can function as the user's regular phone, TEMS Pocket provides apowerful way to find errors without explicitly searching for them.
TEMS Pocket is designed as an integral part of the phones user interface. This promotes continuous use by engineers and technicians, whichtranslates into more time for them to detect, document, and solve problems.
TEMS Pocket can be integrated with other products in the Ascom NetworkTesting portfolio to form a complete network monitoring solution that allowsreuse of information collected throughout an organization.
TEMS Pocket provides its users with a solution that is efficient and offersgood value.

4.7 GPS Support
TEMS Pocket 8.1 supports positioning with the GPS device built into the
handset. An included option makes it possible to connect an externalBluetooth GPS, either one provided by Ascom or a commercially availablemodel. Supported Bluetooth GPS devices are those using Bluetoothversion 1.1 (or later) and NMEA 0183 version 2.2 (or later). Bluetoothpairing is handled by the regular Bluetooth functions in the phone.
Tagging TEMS Pocket logfiles with position information means that thelogfiles are available for comprehensive analysis with mapping tools suchas those found in TEMS Discovery and TEMS Investigation.
TEMS Pocket GPS usage is configured in the settings submenu.
4.8 Logfile RecordingTEMS Pocket can record its measurements in logfiles that contain thesame richness of detail as logfiles recorded with TEMS Automatic test unitsor with terminals connected to TEMS Investigation. The only TEMS datathat cannot be obtained with TEMS Pocket is data that requires additionalhardware not available with TEMS Pocket, such as an external scanner orDSP.
TEMS Pocket logfiles are stored on the MicroSD card that is provided withthe product. This card can accommodate several weeks of continuouslogging. Every TEMS Pocket user is thus in a position to capture valuabledata whenever the opportunity arises, using his or her regular handset. This

greatly enhances the flexibility and efficiency of network monitoring, andalso promotes multiple uses of the same data.
The logfile settings are available from the TEMS Pocket menu.
4.9 Logfile Upload
Logfiles are ordinary files in the phone file system and can be handled bythe user via the file manager. For example, the user can transfer logfiles toa PC via USB or Bluetooth. It is also possible to send files as attachmentsto email.
Recorded logfiles can be sent to an FTP server using the built-in FTPclient. This can be used to report the work progress with reports sentdirectly from the field. It can also be used to fully integrate the collecteddata into TEMS Automatic.
TEMS Pocket can be configured to upload logfiles to an FTP serverautomatically as soon as the recording is concluded. Logfiles arecompressed before they are transferred over the air in order to reduceupload time and to save battery power.
4.10 Logfile Replay
From the Logfile menu the user can replay previously recorded logfiles forquick and easy on-site troubleshooting. All data and events will then displayin the TEMS Pocket user interface exactly as they did in real time. An iconindicates that replay is in progress.

TEMS Pocket supports automation of testing with simple commandsequences called scripts. The type of service to be tested and the neededparameters for the service are defined in the script.
Services that can be included in a script are:
Speech (Voice)
HTTP
Ping
FTP
WAP
SMS
The user can start and stop the script from the Scripts submenu.
Scripts provide a powerful aid in troubleshooting by allowing engineers torun tests at a moments notice. Furthermore, in conjunction with automatedlogfile recording and FTP transfer, the scripts facility allows TEMS Pocketunits to be used as handheld testing probes for TEMS Automatic.
