1.1. Fundamentals of TEMS Investigation 14.0

TEMS Investigation 14.0 is an air interface test tool for cellular networks,

supporting all of the following technologies:

    • GSM/GPRS/EGPRS

    • WCDMA/HSPA/HSPA+

    • LTE (FDD and TDD)

    • TD-SCDMA (including interaction with GSM)

    • cdmaOne/cdma2000/EV-DO Rel. 0/EV-DO Rev. A/EV-DO Rev. B

    • WiMAX (scanning only)

TEMS Investigation enables monitoring of voice and video telephony as wellas a variety of data services over packet-switched and circuit-switched

    connections.

TEMS Investigation is primarily a tool for data collection and real-time

analysis. It interfaces with phones, data cards, scanners, and other

measurement devices; it collects data and records it in logfiles. The

application also boasts a vast array of windows for presentation of logfile

    data.

Still more powerful post-processing facilities are provided by the product

    TEMS Discovery.

    1.1.1. Package Options – Licensing

TEMS Investigation can be purchased with or without data collection

capability (“Base Software Package” and “Replay Package” respectively).

Customers who dispense with TEMS Investigation data collection are still

able to use the non-realtime functions of the application (analysis of a single

    logfile, logfile reports, logfile export).

Supported cellular technologies can be freely selected and combined, except

that WCDMA always comes with GSM support included.

The Base Software Package provides the ability to collect data with Sony

Ericsson phones in UMTS networks and with Qualcomm chipset based

terminals in CDMA networks. Other phones are licensed separately for each

supplier or, in the case of Qualcomm, separately for chipsets with different

    capabilities.

    1.3. Definitions

This section explains a number of central concepts in TEMS Investigation

which are frequently referred to in this user manual.

    Data Services

This term refers to services requiring a data connection (either circuit-

switched or packet-switched), as opposed to voice calls.

    Event

An event is generated by the TEMS Investigation software in order to indicatethat something worthy of note has occurred, either in the cellular network or in

connected equipment. A number of events are predefined. Besides these,

you can define events of your own.

All predefined events are found in Information Elements and Events,

    chapter 7.

User-defined events are specified by logical expressions which trigger the

event when they evaluate to true. These expressions can contain predefined

events, Layer 3 messages, and conditions involving information elements.

    Information Element

Information elements are pieces of numeric or text-format data that are

presentable in the TEMS Investigation user interface. All information

elements handled by TEMS Investigation are found in Information Elementsand Events, chapter 3.

    Information Element, Argument of

Many information elements contain an array of values rather than a single

value. To pick one item from the array, an argument is used.

For instance, the GSM information element Neighbor RxLev contains the

signal strengths of all neighboring channels (there may be up to 32). To

present the signal strength of a particular neighbor channel, you must specify

an argument in the form of a neighbor index between 1 and 32.

Complete details on the arguments of information elements are given in

Information Elements and Events, chapter 3.

    Message

The term “message” in this user manual generally denotes an air interface

message described in the wireless technology specifications, most often a

Layer 3 message. A “message window”, however (chapter 26), may list either

air interface messages, or mode or error reports produced by phones, ormessages from various protocols, or events.

    Mode Report

A mode report is a status or measurement report generated by a phone.

    Phone

The term “phone” covers user terminals from all supported technologies.

When a subset is meant, a suitable qualifier is prefixed, and/or a moreprecise term is used (“GSM phone”, “Sony Ericsson GSM phone”, “LG UE”,

“Samsung LTE modem”, “Sierra Wireless CDMA data card”, etc.).

Some user terminals supported by TEMS Investigation are in fact data cards,

USB modems, etc. rather than phones. The word “terminal” is therefore

sometimes used instead of “phone”, without any difference in meaning from

the point of view of TEMS Investigation.

    Route

The term “route” refers to a planned route created in the Pinpoint Window.

    http://../IEs%20and%20Events/Investigation%20IEs%20and%20Events.pdfhttp://../IEs%20and%20Events/Investigation%20IEs%20and%20Events.pdfhttp://../IEs%20and%20Events/Investigation%20IEs%20and%20Events.pdfhttp://../IEs%20and%20Events/Investigation%20IEs%20and%20Events.pdfhttp://../IEs%20and%20Events/Investigation%20IEs%20and%20Events.pdfhttp://../IEs%20and%20Events/Investigation%20IEs%20and%20Events.pdf

    Scanner

The term “scanner” denotes a device dedicated to scanning, for example a

PCTel scanner. Phones with scanning capabilities are not  referred to as

    scanners.

    Track

A track is a walk along a planned route in the Pinpoint Window.

    2. Recently Introduced Features

    in TEMS Investigation

    2.1. What’s New in TEMS Investigation 14.0

2.1.1. Control Functions for SmartphonesTEMS products have a long tradition of offering unique device control

capabilities that rely on advanced measurement capabilities in the device

hardware. TEMS Investigation 14.0 continues and reinforces this tradition by

adding the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S smartphone as a connectable

device. This is a Qualcomm chipset based device running under Android, and

it obeys the following control commands:

    • Lock to RAT

    • Lock to band (WCDMA and GSM)• Control cell selection and handover (WCDMA and GSM)

    • Set cell barred behavior (WCDMA and GSM)

    • Enable/Disable HS capability

The Samsung Infuse 4G smartphone (ST-Ericsson chipset based), likewise

new as a connectable device, supports all of the above commands as well as

    the following:

    • Control access class

    • Control PLMN

    • Control speech codec usage

    • Enable/Disable EDGE capability

Chapter 2. Recently Introduced Features in TEMS Investigation

    NT12-2533 ver 1.0 9

    2.1.2. New Logfile Format

The old logfile format (*.log) is replaced in TEMS Investigation 14.0 by a new

format with extension .trp. The new format embodies a more flexible and

versatile framework for recording of measurement data:

    • Multiple logfiles can be recorded in parallel, each recording being wholly

independent of the others. The activities of one device can be recorded in

    any number of logfiles simultaneously.

    • In logfile recording controlled by a script, you can opt to record only a

    subset of the activated devices.

    • At creation time, you can tag logfiles with metadata which can serve as

an aid to locating, sorting, and categorizing the files later on. Some of this

metadata is also visible in Windows Explorer.

    • The logfile size is significantly reduced compared to the LOG format.

When loading a completed logfile into TEMS Investigation later on for

analysis, extensive information about the file appears on a new Navigator tab

called the Logfile tab. Here you can view not only general information (time

and space coordinates, descriptive metadata added at recording time, and

    more) but also:

    • A list of the participating devices with accompanying key properties

(capabilities, hardware identifiers, and more), presented in the same wayas in live mode. If you wish, you can hide data from selected devices in

    the logfile presentation.

    • A complete chronology of the activities performed by all devices, and

their outcomes. The chronology can be grouped by device or activity type,

or filtered to show only one device or one type of activity.

    • Activity statistics: Total/succeeded/failed/aborted.

Full compatibility with the old logfile format (*.log) is of course maintained.

2.1.3. Speech Quality Measurement with POLQA

POLQA, defined in the ITU P.863 standard, is the successor of PESQ, being

specially developed for HD voice, 3G and 4G/LTE, and VoIP. POLQA is

introduced in TEMS Investigation 14.0 as a speech quality measurement

algorithm for VoIP. CS voice support will follow in a later release.

The POLQA (Perceptual Objective Listening Quality Analysis) algorithm is

designed along similar lines as PESQ, being a reference-based method that

compares the degraded speech with the undistorted original to assess

    TEMS Investigation 14.0 User’s Manual

    10

quality. However, it has been refined to eliminate known weaknesses of

    PESQ, particularly in these areas:

    • Handling of new and complex types of distortions that arise from today’s

convergence and coexistence of voice, data, and multimedia applicationservices. One example is the effects of packet loss and of packet loss

    concealment.

    • Performance for higher-bandwidth audio signals (wideband, super-

    wideband).

    • Performance for CDMA speech codecs and hence for CDMA networks in

    general.

2.1.4. Searching, Filtering, and Highlighting in MessageWindows

New functions for searching, filtering, and visual highlighting have been

implemented in message windows in order to accelerate analysis. The

search functions essentially correspond to the Find in Logfile feature in

previous product versions, which has been removed. You can:

    • Find arbitrary text in message headers. Optionally, the full message

contents can be searched. Case and whole-word matching is available. A

“find next/find previous” feature is included for easy stepping back andforth between hits (can be done with the keyboard arrow keys).

    • Show only messages of a selected type.

    • Hide messages of a selected type.

    • Highlight selected types of messages in unique colors.

    2.1.5. Expansion of Scanning Capabilities

    • GSM scanning capabilities of Rohde & Schwarz TSMW are now utilized:

     – RSSI scanning, static ARFCN set

     – RSSI scanning: BSIC decoding

     – RSSI scanning: C/I measurement.

    • LTE: TDD and FDD pilot scans can be run in parallel on Rohde &

    Schwarz TSMW.

    • Relaxed handling of scanning configuration sets, allowing multiple

devices to scan concurrently using different configuration sets.

instead of TEMS Investigation’s built-in Web browser. Two new HTTP

    information
