Pastor’s Pen: 2 Corinthians 5.7 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.
2 The old has passed away; behold,
the new has come. As I write this article we are trying to put together another 2
nd
service worship to be held in the log church at Fowler Park. Worship would be followed by baptisms in the lake. It is a blessing for me, or any pastor, to be able to take this spiritual journey with people that love Jesus and will proclaim their love and their inner faith through an outward expression like baptism.
Let’s be clear about baptism… “You are not saved by being baptized!!!” You are saved by believing in Jesus Christ. Acts 16.31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” You are saved by grace. Grace is a gift… a gift from God. You don’t deserve salvation. None of us are without sin and therefore all of us need a “Savior”. Jesus provid-ed for your salvation as he died on the cross. You did nothing to “deserve” it. You can’t buy it, marry into it, be born into it or work for it or earn it. Ephesians 2.8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. It’s all about God’s plan and the sacrifice Jesus was willing to make. John 3.16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Baptism is something we do AFTER we have believed in Jesus and we want the world to know that we are going to become disciples of his. We are intending to follow Jesus… one of the actions we fre-quently take, as Christians, followers of Christ, is to be baptized. Baptism is an outward expression (meaning we physically do it and others can see it) of our inner faith (others can’t physically see our in-ner faith). God knows our hearts and our faith but the world must use outward expressions to gauge or determine our faith. Baptism is one step in a believer’s journey. Sometimes folks ask me if they can be baptized again. Perhaps they were baptized as a child and they don’t remember it. As United Methodists we don’t Re-baptize.

That would be like us saying to God we don’t believe our baptism was valid, so we never re-baptize. I will however allow you to remember your baptism to experi-ence the water and the liturgy again, so you can once again proclaim your faith and praise God for his wonderful grace.
HAVE YOU EXPRESSED YOUR BELIEF IN JESUS? Have you made a public profession of your faith? Baptism is one way to do that. Let me know if you are in-terested in being baptized or “remembering your baptism”.

The Veteran's Detachment continues to grow with both veterans and other associ-ates coming out to support ministry outreach efforts. This quarter we have given away several dozen pounds of meat from each hunting expedition. There are plenty of family and individual sized packages so if you know anyone in need please direct them to us. We are happy to report that we have secured the major equipment to move the meat processing to the outpost. However there are still important small items that would be useful, so if you have any extra of the following things, please consider bringing them in to donate for
the cause: Cutting boards, large pans or trays, and tubs. Also, if anyone has a utility shelving unit, the kind that could hold cutting boards, large pans, and trays, we could use one of those! We will still maintain a freezer full of meat at Temple for accessibil-ity to the entire congregation. We are simply moving the meat processing out of the UMT kitchen for the sake of lessening the burden on that busy facility. The Detachment is also conducting two walkabouts to find and assist the homeless and transient in May; both on the 6th and 27th in conjunction with the UMT outreach effort. Most exciting, we plan to have two new members baptized by Pastor Kevin in June in Fowler Park so stay tuned for more details and join us there to celebrate!

KUDOS AND NOTES
On behalf of The Salvation Army, I would like to thank you for the generous gift of $1500. Your commitment to helping us take care of those who have fallen on hard times is sincerely appreciated. For 129 years, The Salvation Army in Vigo County has been caring for our neighbors with the help of generous friends like you. Thank you for partnering with us in fulfilling our mis-sion—motivated by the love of God—to meet basic human needs without discrimination. Gordon Hoag, Captain, Corps Administrator
As always, we here at the 14th & Chestnut Community Center would like to say Thank You for the love that you have shown us. Your generous donation of $140 to sponsor a girl for Sum-mer Camp 2017 will truly help us in our ministry… This pro-gram brings a lot of love and joy to our children. Donations are extremely important to us and most appreciated. Thanks to folks like you we are accomplishing so much, and we know that the Lord’s work is being done. Bill Felts
Pat Price would like to thank everyone for all their prayers and cards!
We need first service litur-gists! If you would like to be on the liturgist rotation, please call Theresa Camp at 812-240-9889 (or text), or email [email protected]. No experience necessary!!

Preschool Graduation took place on May 22, 2014. The sanctuary was filled with proud parents and grandparents celebrating a terrific year. The children sang songs and we watched a slide show. Soon the graduates were announced and I read off their names and what each one planned to be as an adult. We had many ideas, everything from Sam wanting to be a paleontologist (dinosaur expert) to Maggie wanted to be a princess fairy. Thank you to Jill, who accompanied us on the piano and led us in prayer. The happy, but somewhat teary, crowd enjoyed refresh-ments in fellowship hall afterwards. It is amazing to think how quickly our school year passed. Each year I am sad to see some of stu-dents heading off to Kindergarten, but I know they are ready to go and they will do well. It seems just yesterday these four and five year olds were just little two year olds arriving for the first time. How quickly they change and become so grown up! This summer we have a large group of kids enjoying Summer Mom's Day Out on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Several of our teachers are leading the kids through fun activities and enjoying the playground.

New to the Library: Adult
Becoming a Thinking Christian. I f we want church renewal,
we will have to renew thinking in the church. The goal is to focus
and sharpen one’s thinking so that it is one’s own, and to apply that
thinking to one’s being and acting.
Learning to Pray. Many who seek comfort and healing from
prayer are unsure about how to pray. What should prayer feel like,
and what is it supposed to accomplish? “Prayer is not words; prayer
is what happens when you listen and wait for the outline of heaven to emerge.”
author Wayne Muller.
The Problem with Paul. People often find Paul hard to stomach. His
views on women, sex and marriage, his failure to attack the institution of slavery,
his verbal attacks on his opponents have all come under fire. The author helps
us to bridge the gap between Paul’s world and our own, providing the perspective
we need to begin to make sense of Paul, the many and his message.
Emergence Christianity. Are you experiencing church-death anxiety? Do
you have shortness of breath when thinking about the decline of Christianity in
America? Through her careful study, the author invites you to discover fascinat-
ing insights into the concerns, organizational patterns, theology, and most press-
ing questions facing the church today. And you’ll get a glimpse into the future.
Gift of Bobbie Bakker.
Convictions. Imagine that Christianity is about loving God. Imagine that
it’s not about the self and its concerns, about “what’s in it for me”. Imagine that
loving God is about being attentive to the one in whom we live and move and
have our being. Imagine that it is about loving what God loves. How would that
change our life? Gift of Bobbie Bakker.
