I was reading a description of it a month ago: “Rabbi Cohen works at a Temple on Hillpointe Road and often meets congregants at Bagel Café”. That’s weird, I thought, sounds a bit like me! As I read on I discovered the Rabbi Cohen in the book is actually masquerading as a Rabbi and is really a mob hit man in hiding. Basically, it’s your average tale of religion, murder and bagels. Mr. Goldberg, he responded in a pleasant manner and seemed open to coming to Las Vegas to explain how he got the idea for the book and how the mob and Hillpointe Road seemed to be a match made in heaven. Some of our congregants have been very sweet and taken offence at dragging my good name and that of Judaism through the dirt. I, on the other hand, take it all in good humor, simply amused and curious at the thinking behind the book. In the novel, Mr. Goldberg makes some interesting observations about life in Summerlin, the Jewish community and about the work that Rabbis do. E are pleased to announce that Doron Almog will be speaking at our services on December 12th. Major General Doron Almog served in the IDF from 1969-2004. He led the first paratrooper force to land in Entebbe, Uganda, in the now famous 1976 Rescue Operation, capturing the airfield’s control tower and marking the runway for incoming Israeli planes. In 1984, he led the airlift of more than 6,000 Ethiopian Jews to Israel in Operation Moses, and from 2001 to 2004, headed Israel’s Southern Command. He was considered for IDF Chief of Staff, but chose instead to focus on Aleh Negev-Nahalat Eran, a partnership with Jewish National Fund to build a village in Israel’s Negev desert for the country’s most severe special needs population, in honor of his son Eran. General Almog said he learned from his son that society is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable members. The village has quickly become a model for the world of human potential and dignity.

As we as a congregation come to the end of our calendar year, I want to take this

opportunity to thank each and every one of you for the support and love that I have

received throughout our transition and growth of our Temple while serving as your

President. We have made tremendous progress in galvanizing our place within the Las

Vegas Jewish Community. However, we still have a road to travel and we can only

complete our journey with help from all of you, the members of Temple Sinai.

The High Holidays have come and gone but just a reminder to anyone wishing to send

in their Kol Nidre Donation…we will be more than happy to still accept it! An additional

advantage to sending it in by December 31, 2014 is the tax deduction. Such a deal!

Additionally, our Capital Campaign is in full swing. For those of you that aren’t sure what the Capital Campaign

is, it is an endowment earmarked for the sustainability of our new campus. Please consider participating in this

important program that is vital to our future. I encourage anyone that is interested in the Capital Campaign to

please see me, call me or send me an email for more information about how you can donate and help.

We have some fun and educational opportunities in the near future for all to enjoy. Keep an eye out for Monte

Carlo Night coming soon to a shul near you! It will be a fun night of schmoozing, gambling and of course eating

here at Temple Sinai. There will also be an educational opportunity with our Scholar in Residence program the

end of January, which will give any member a chance to further increase their understanding of what it is to be

Jewish in many different areas of life, and if you are interested in taking our Hebrew classes, whether a

beginner or advanced, we will be starting those the beginning of 2015.

I am excited for the many programs and activities planned for Temple Sinai because it provides all of us with

multiple opportunities to be with each other and to share our experiences, strength and love with one

another. I look forward to seeing all of you soon around the campus.

J Library at Temple Sinai Religious School

On Sunday 10/26, our Pre-K, Kindergarten, and first

grade classes gathered at Mrs. Knox’s classroom to

hear Mr. David Clark, PJ Library representative at the

Jewish Federation of Las Vegas, reading the book

“Bagels from Benny” Written by Aubrey Davis and

Illustrated by Dusan Petricic. While working in his

grandfather’s bakery, Benny learns the joys of giving

and receiving, caring and gratitude.

Students discussed the moral value of the story,

sharing their own personal experience of this lesson,

and working on a creative art project. We thank Mr. David Clark for his time

and effort, and for making our past Sunday so special for our young

students.

Hebrew Studies

Our Tuesdays at Temple Sinai Hebrew School are evolving to be enriching

days, which aim to establish several core skills of the Hebrew Language. For

the lower grades and new students, we focus on letter recognition,

pronunciation, and recognition of vowels. After mastering these skills, we

continue to enhance the students’ reading fluency as we emphasize the

correct decoding of the required words for each specific grade. Reading

fluency requires collaboration of multiple language skills (letter and vowel

recognition, strong memory, decoding, and correct pronunciation.)

Research shows that learning a second language contributes to multi-

sensory development of the student. Through colors, pictures, music,

shapes, videos, and more, the students are able to decode, read, write, and

ultimately speak a second language. Our team is comprised of classroom

teachers, support and enrichment unit, and a variety of educators including

Cantor Gindlin and Rabbi Cohen. “We like to answer the needs of the

individual learner in and out of the classroom,” says Ronna Schwartz, 3rd

year Hebrew Specialist at Temple Sinai Religious School.

Special Jewish Summer Camp Presentation

A special Jewish summer camps presentation will take place on 12/7/2014,

11.30-12.00 at our Sunday closing assembly. The IAC organization working

on this special summer camp presentation. Representatives of 10 Jewish

camps from Arizona, California, and more will be there. Parents are

encouraged to join us in the Sanctuary and learn about the newest trends in

Jewish summer camps. Special raffles and special discount for those who

plan to attend and register to one of these camps during that weekend. In

addition to that, Temple Sinai through The Greenberg Fund offers

scholarships for students who will go for the first time to Jewish camps. We

will hand out the scholarship forms on that Sunday.

Israel Education

There is nothing like learning and hearing about the State of Israel from

Israeli residents who live in Israel and experience everything first hand.

Our wonderful exchange students – Nivi and Tamuz, spent their first

semester at the Adelson School as exchange students from the Leo Baeck

School in Haifa, Israel. For the past few months, Nivi and Tamuz helped

students read and write Hebrew, and as we begin the last month of their

exchange program (they are planned to go back to Israel in Mid-

December), we will gear their time at the Religious School for a close

look on the State of Israel through updated presentations and

programs. We plan to have Nivi and Tamuz, together with Mr. Nadav

Mendelson (IAC representative) presenting to each group of classes

together, and we will start on Sunday 11/16 @9.45-10.30am with 5th &

6th grade, and will continue on Tuesday 11/18 @ 4.15-5.00pm with 7th

grade, 11/23 @ 9.45-10.30am with 3rd & 4th grade, and 12/7 @9.45-

10.30am with 1st & 2nd grade. Parents are invited to participate in these

sessions.

Temple Sinai continues to work with our youth on exciting programs,

nights out, youth services, and a special end of the year retreat.

appy Chanukah everyone! Let’s end 2014 by spending time with family and friends, even though every family has a crazy aunt, uncle or cousin we need to remember to put the FUN in dysfunctional! There is no such thing as a perfect family and if we embrace and accept everyone for who they are, warts and all, we will be less disappointed and more amused. Think about the television shows we watch, then make yourself and members of your family characters.

It has taken my family years to learn to laugh at ourselves, and personally I think we are not finished yet. My sister and I decided to take this approach about 20 years ago (despite my Mom’s picket fence approach to life) and our kids have grown up with the crazy as normal, so reality TV shows just seem over the top. I have to tell you a secret…I kinda like the crazy holiday times…does that make me a drama queen? I hope not. I wouldn’t want to think our family is any more “FUN” than the rest of yours. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! The Chico Fashion Show and Brunch Sunday November 16th 10am-1pm was a great success. Our models were familiar and fun. Mark Sample made a great salad/baked potato bar and the conversation was contagious. December is the annual Chanukah Party with the Men’s Club on Sunday, December 14, 5pm-8pm. Plan to come and celebrate. Sisterhood is leading by example with programs for all Temple members. Zumba classes every Thursday from 7pm-8pm ($5/class or 5 classes for $20) – Come work out with friends and don’t worry of you are new the classes will be age and skill-level appropriate starting November 6th at the Temple. Game Night for all Temple members will be held the 1st Wednesday of each month – Mah Jong, Rummikub, Card Games and more will be offered in the Library starting at 6pm-8pm’ish. Partake in playful competition, bring your friends, favorite games and make new friends with common interests! The Sisterhood’s Gift Shop is OPEN – Hours of operation are: Fridays 6pm-7:30pm, Sundays 9am-1pm and Tuesday 4:30pm to 6pm and always by appointment look for Jan Shumow. The Sisterhood Gift Shop is NOW OFFERING INVITATIONS for any celebration! Get your Bar/Bat Mitzvah shopping done in one convenient location! Don’t be shy…..shop, shop and shop…we will buy more! “The darkness of the whole world cannot swallow

the glowing of a candle.” – Robert Altinger

We’ve “fallen back” an hour on the clock, and the

days are getting ever shorter. Literal darkness

surrounds us in these winter months as we drive

home from work, head out to dinner with family

and friends, and arrive at the synagogue for Friday

night services. For some of us, a more figurative sort of darkness

seems to permeate our lives, as we hear the news broadcasts that

seem so full of bad news, or as we struggle with very real life

challenges or times of hopelessness. But then… we light the lights… not

just of Shabbat, but of Chanukah, our festival of light and rededication,

and the glow of those little candles pierces through the darkness, both

literally and figuratively. That’s the thing about light – darkness cannot

destroy it.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose legacy we will celebrate next month,

famously said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do

that.” He was right of course, and, as Chanukah approaches, we do

well to remember that each of us has the possibility to bring some light

into the world, and to drive out some darkness in so doing. As Jews,

we do well also to remember that the real miracle of the Chanukah

story may not have been that the oil lasted longer than it should have,

but rather that, after neglect and desecration, the Holy Temple was

rededicated to G-d. That is, Chanukah is not simply about bringing

light; it is also about rededicating ourselves to service.

The Men’s Club of Temple Sinai is many things to many people, but it is

first and foremost a service organization. Whether it is a community

member in need of practical assistance, a synagogue event in need of

volunteers, or a door in need of opening, the members of the Men’s

Club are always there to help. With a membership that now exceeds

one hundred men, there hardly exists a challenge we are not equipped

to handle. But… we can always do more, so here is my Chanukah

challenge: if you are already a member of the Men’s Club, find a way

to let your own light shine, and rededicate yourself to serving on one

or more of our committees or chairing a project of some sort; if you

are not yet a member of the Men’s Club, come join us, and learn about

the many ways you can serve your congregational family with us.

As we gather around the menorah with family and friends this month,

we will hear the familiar holiday song, “Light One Candle”. This year, as

we bask in the candle glow of the season, let’s all take the words of

that song to heart and rededicate ourselves to service, to keeping the

light burning. If each one of us does our own small part in that regard,

we can drive out the darkness in the world.

December 5-6 Vayishlach Jacob and Esau

reunite. Jacob becomes Israel. Dinah’s rape in Shechem is revenged by her brothers. Rachel dies in childbirth. Isaac dies; he’s buried with his parents in Hebron.

December 12-13 Vayeshev Jacob favors his son Joseph over his brothers. The brothers sell Joseph into slavery. Our 400 years in Egypt begin. Joseph rebuffs Potiphar’s wife and is thrown in jail.

December 19-20 Miketz (Shabbat Chanukah) Joseph interprets Pharaoh’s dreams and ascends to a position of great powers. Joseph marries and has two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. When his brothers come to Egypt to buy food, Joseph withholds his identity until Benjamin is brought back.

December 26-27 Vayigash Judah pleads for his brother Benjamin’s release. Joseph reveals himself and forgives his brothers. Jacob comes to Egypt and is welcomed by Pharaoh. The tribes of Israel settle in Goshen and thrive in Egypt.

This is easy and important. You can get all the help you need.

Please read below.

An easy and important way you can help support your Temple is by supporting our advertising and sponsorship programs. We need your help in finding advertisers. The programs are: Shofar advertising - starting at $15 is a really good deal for businesses in the area. They get to 350 families in print or on-line. All we need to contact them are a person’s name and their e-mail address. We take care of the rest. Please volunteer some names and addresses. See below. E-blast Sponsorship - The weekly e-blast can contain add-on advertising. The advertiser gets 5 weekly e-blasts for $18. Very easy but effective way to get to the 600 e-mails on our list. Here again, all we need is the person’s name and their e-mail address. We take care of the rest. Shabbat Flyer Sponsorship - Personal messages may be displayed in the flyer. e.g. Sponsor in honor of your anniversary or birthday. An easy way to support your Temple and it is only $18. This may be coordinated with Oneg Shabbat sponsorships. Last month we introduced the Eitz Tzedakah…the Tree of Donations which delineates all the opportunities for making donations to the Temple. It also lists who to contact for these items. Q1. Can I designate the donation to go to various funds? Yes the funds available include The General Fund, Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund, Cantor’s Discretionary Fund, the Endowment Fund, the Gertrude Scholarship Fund, the Religious School Fund and The Richard Greenberg Memorial Fund. Q2. What are the Pavers? These are the bricks in the courtyard. When all the details are completed, members will be able to dedicate pavers with names on them. Q3. I want to see what the Note Card Bundle of 7 is. Where can I see them? In the Sisterhood Gift shop. These cards allow you to write personal notes to family and friends. The card indicates a donation was made to the Temple Sinai General Fund. Q4. When will the Tree of Life be installed? It is now installed. Orders may be placed. Q5. Do I have to pay all at once for larger donation items? Memorial Plaques may be charged over a 4 month period. The contact can help you with this. Q6. Why can’t I donate a Siddur? The volume of Siddurim we have is sufficient to satisfy our needs.

Temple Sinai Time Capsule

As a result of the efforts of several members,

including Archie Weitman, Dr. Lawrence Copeland,

Frances Copeland, Steve Haberkorn, Mark Ohriner,

Myron Bernstein, Meera Kamegai and Seymour

Kaplan, Temple Sinai is putting together a Time

Capsule. It will be placed into a wall in our new

Sanctuary. The location will be marked by a

plaque on the wall.

If you have any information, including pictures and

any personal history, that relates to the history of

Temple Sinai, we would love to have you submit

that information for placement in the Time

Capsule.

All of the information provided for the Time

Capsule will be private. It should be placed into

sealed envelopes, marked “Time Capsule”, and

brought to the Temple office by March 1, 2015.

Safe Nest Drop Off Box

Temple Sinai continues its support for Safe Nest by housing a drop off box on site. Safe Nest is Nevada’s largest and most comprehensive charity devoted solely to domestic violence issues. Safe Nest’s programs are concentrated in four areas of service: shelter, counseling, advocacy and prevention. Safe Nest accepts clothing, toys and baby supplies. For a comprehensive list please visit their website www.safenest.org . The drop off box is located on west side of the property next to the structure which holds our garbage bin.
