Romans 1:11-12 I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong— 12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each others faith. The Book of Nehemiah gives us an interesting perspective about worship after the people returned from captivity. Gods chosen, Israel, had been taken captive and physically moved away from their homes to another geographic location. They spent years and years away from their promised land”. Finally God uti- lized new leadership in their captors society to allow the Israelites the op- portunity to go back to their homes and rebuild their lives AND worship their God again in the manner God had previously instructed them. Let s look at Nehemiah chapter 8: Nehemiah 8.1 all the people came together as one in the square before the Wa- ter Gate. They told Ezra the teacher of the Law to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded for Israel. 2 So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. 3 He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law. 4 Ezra the teacher of the Law stood on a high wooden platform built for the occasion. Beside him on his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah and Maaseiah; and on his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah and Meshullam. 5 Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up. 6 Ez- ra praised the LORD, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands and re- sponded, Amen! Amen! Then they bowed down and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground. [I dont believe this was just religious ritual I feel they were so moved to hear the Word that they spontaneously stood upmoved emotionally by the oppor- tunity to experience Gods Word again and assemble together.] (continued on page 5)

Pastor’s Pen: October—Revival; having the opportunity to return to God. One of my favorite, or guiding, verses for my ministry has been Romans 1:11-12. Paul is writing to the Romans and shares his

heart. It speaks of what I want to try to accomplish, but also acknowledges that we are in this together and we both have a role to play in ministry… that we should both be looking out for one another, helping, edifying and encouraging one another. Romans 1:11-12 I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong— 12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. The Book of Nehemiah gives us an interesting perspective about worship after the people returned from captivity. God’s chosen, Israel, had been taken captive and physically moved away from their homes to another geographic location. They spent years and years away from their “promised land”. Finally God uti-lized new leadership in their captor’s society to allow the Israelites the op-portunity to go back to their homes and rebuild their lives AND worship their God again in the manner God had previously instructed them. (Continued from Page 1) 7 The Levites—Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Aza-riah, Jozabad, Hanan and Pelaiah—instructed the people in the Law while the people were standing there. 8 They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read. [Matthew Henry’s commentary states; “Reading the Scriptures in religious assemblies is an ordi-nance of God, whereby he is honored, and his church edified. Those who hear the word, should un-derstand it, else it is to them but an empty sound of words. It is therefore required of teachers that they explain the word, and give the sense of it. Reading is good, and preaching is good, but ex-pounding makes reading the better understood, and preaching the more convincing.”] 9 Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law. 10 Ne-hemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” 11 The Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for this is a holy day. Do not grieve.” 12 Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy, because they now understood the words that had been made known to them. [Matthew Henry’s commentary states; “It was a good sign that their hearts were tender, when they heard the words of the law. The people were to send portions to those for whom nothing was pre-pared. It is the duty of a religious feast, as well as of a religious fast, to draw out the soul to the hun-gry; God's bounty should make us bountiful. We must not only give to those that offer themselves, but send to those out of sight. Their strength consisted in joy in the Lord. The better we understand God's word, the more comfort we find in it; the darkness of trouble arises from the darkness of ignorance.” ] The people’s hearts were tender… they were in a place where they would allow the Word to impact their lives and that is a condition that God can work with and WILL work with. Where are we as individuals and as a church in regards to our worship and the reading of God’s Word? What does it mean to us? How does it impact us? Do we read God’s word to find ammu-nition to lead the lives we want to lead, or do we look to find what God’s expectations are for us? (So we can live into God’s expectations for us.) Is your spirit open to worship that seeks God’s will and spontaneously gives God praise, honor & glory? Let us ALL determine to aid one another as we seek God’s will for our lives and the life of our church. The fall season is a time of harvest, a time when we consider how our efforts have paid off. Farmers consider their yields and churches/Christians should consider their harvest. Did our efforts bring God a return for the Kingdom? Fall and harvest blessings to you. PK & Marlene

I also want to thank the Sun-day School classes and Susie Ooley-Viray for their beautiful baskets. Once again this church has come to-gether and I thank you.

Autumn Greetings to the folks of United Methodist Temple! We have had such a wonderful beginning of the school year at TPS. The parent support has been phenomenal and the children have displayed a lot of early maturity. We are very excited to discover the world around our classroom and hallways at what we call the best preschool around.

We've welcomed a lot of new faces at TPS. If your time permits, feel free to stop by and say hello and check out what we are doing inside our classes. Pastor Kevin has been such a genuine asset to our school and the children love spending time in his company. The Time with Pastor opportunity makes an impact upon our lives and the parents love to hear about this unique program we have. I hope many of you have had an opportunity to stop by our Bible bulletin board outside my classroom near the small water fountain. Each month the bulletin board will change. A theme that ties in with our monthly Bible lesson will be on display. Last month was "Jesus is at the Core." I hope you enjoy viewing all our hallway boards. As we prepare for cooler mornings, the love and warmth that radiates from this church is felt within our preschool. We're looking forward to seeing you soon. Misty Churchill 2's and MDO classes

The Church Leadership Council and the Worship Team have prepared a survey that will be distributed during the Worship Services the first two weeks of October, as part of their effort to make sure everyone’s voice is heard regarding the proposed joining of our two worship services into one com-bined service. The decision has not yet been made, and they want to give everyone a chance to share their ideas be-fore they decide. There will also be two “town hall” informational meetings, one on Tuesday, Oc-tober 10 from 1-2pm, and another on Thursday, October 19 from 6-7 pm, both in Fellowship Hall. During these meetings, you will have an opportunity to learn more about their thoughts concerning the potential change, as well as offer com-ments and ask any questions you may have. If you cannot attend one of these meetings or the Worship Services and would like a survey to complete, please call or email the church office. 812-299-1898 or [email protected]
