RABBI’S REFLECTIONS:

“I’m Not Happy Because ________”

“I’m not happy because ________.” Fill in the blank. What’s on your list? Getting older? Declining health? Not meeting the right partner? Going bald? Too much weight? Greying? Wrinkles? Not enough money? Happiness is a matter of per-spective. Money doesn’t

bring happiness once basic needs are met. For dec-ades the Irish had the lowest European standard of living; it’s improved, and they now rank 14th instead of at the top, as they did a decade ago. The USA fell from 14th to 18th in 2018. Our income doubled since 1972. Nordic countries topped the UN world list from the beginning, 2012. (Canada is 7th, and Israel 11th.) is not perfect. We fail to see the beautiful forest for the one bad tree or leaf. We see a beautiful ceiling with a tile missing and concentrate on the missing tile. We are los-ing hair and see hair when we step into a room of people. We are overweight and see thin people at a party. We date and see a missing personality, or sexiness, or intelli-gence, or whatever. He calls it “The Miss-ing Tile Syndrome.” My colleague Mayer Abramowitz, who died last year at 97, had a marvelous, dry, witty sense of humor. A friend once asked him if he realized his socks did not match. Immediately he replied with a straight face that he always wore mismatched socks so congregants could get out their complaining quota. Any other complaints must be seri-ous. He once wrote a piece about aging, “Why I Want to Get Older, Not Younger.” He wrote how he wanted to write a book, Getting Older Isn’t a Disease: “Sam” is re-minded of his age every time he visits the doctor. Sam complains of a backache. The

doctor starts, “Well, at your age...” and Sam retorts, “I had backaches way back when I was in the army. I was 26 years old then.” Ruth, a retired teacher, hates the term “senior citizen” and calls her re-tirement, “refirement.” She is more active and fired up about the things she can do. I once had a congregant who retired at 72. Her son complained that he could never reach her. At least when she worked he could call her there. After retirement, she left home at 7 AM, prayed at 9 AM daily services, and returned home about 11 PM, including delivering meals to the “old folks,” many of whom were younger. I knew a couple whom people considered old at 40, due to how they thought and talked. Rabbi Abramowitz wrote about aging with grace. He quoted a friend, Rachel, who found people who age gracefully are fascinating and marvelous.

Dear Fellow Congregant: Looking forward to the High Holy Days, we thought you would like an explanation of Temple Israel’s High Holy Day ticket process With membership, families receive two adult tickets and tickets for all children under age 21. Additional tickets for children over the age of 21 may be purchased for $100 each. Tickets for other adult family members are available at $140 each. Non-members may purchase tickets at $350 each. According to the Temple’s long-standing practice, we make High Holy Day seats avail-able at no charge to needy individuals, full-time college students, and active military personnel. To be courteous and fair to everyone, we ask that you consider the following infor-mation when ordering your tickets: 1. Each person attending High Holy Day services must have a ticket. Tickets are issued for specific seats (as in a theater,) and you are expected to occupy the seat designated on your ticket. 2. Tickets are non-transferable.

3. Inter-married spouse members and individual members may reserve tickets for them-selves, their spouses, and their children. 4. Each year, all but a few seats are reserved in advance; please do not assume that an unoccupied seat is an available seat. 5. Tickets cannot be purchased for non-relatives at the member rates. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in adhering to the spirit of our ticket process. We are all working diligently to make our High Holy Day services meaningful and dignified. If you have further questions, please call the temple office, 631 727-3191.

Placing Names on the Yizkor List—Yom Kippur

We will memorialize the names of the dear departed during the Yizkor Service, as we have done in the past. According to tradition, Tzedakah—the giving of charity—is an integral part of the Me-morial service. In that spirit, you may have the names of the departed inscribed in a beau-tiful Yizkor service booklet, including names on the memorial plaques. To have names memorialized in this booklet, please send a donation of $18 per name. Mail this form, with names printed clearly, along with your check. All names in the booklet and on plaques will be read during the Yizkor service. Memorialized by In loving memory of Example:

(Rabbi—continued from page 2)

His four rules, two don’ts and two do’s about aging gracefully are: Don’t be angry at the world. There is as much goodness around us today as there was when we were young. The beauty of nature hasn’t changed. And people haven’t changed, either. Don’t pity yourself. Since aging is not a disease, life is not a bitter pill. Try a dose of self-love. Do be grateful for what you have. We may have slowed down, but we’ve lost none of the wisdom life has taught us. Do share your life, not only tzores (troubles) with others. That’s the only way to avoid the curse of loneliness. Life is like flying on an El Al plane....Don’t just sit there, squeezed into a narrow confining seat: get to know people, you won’t feel like kvetching so much. Studies over time have found that: Republicans have been happier than Democrats since 1972; both are happier than Independents. Married people are happier than unmar-ried, with some caveats; and live longer and are healthier. Churchgoers are happier than non-

churchgoers, live longer, and are healthi-er. Community probably matters more than prayer. Sunbelt residents are happier than those living elsewhere. Rich people are happier than poor peo-ple; however, money is not the cause. Money matters if we have more than those around us. Contrary to expectations, however: Retirees are no happier than workers. Pet owners are no happier than those without pets. Couples with children are no happier than couples without children, meaning being married counts more than having children. So think about your perspective on life and what it says about your happiness quotient. And come to services. Study af-ter study shows that weekly churchgoers are happier than semi-attendees and no-shows. Presumably this also is true of shulgoers. Rabbi Michael Rascoe

The Passing of Corky Segal

Temple Israel family and friends mourned the recent passing of Corky (Corinne) Segal on May 30th. She was a long-time member, beloved and well-known in our congregation. She and her husband Mickey were frequently seen at Friday night and Saturday morning services, on holidays, and at special events. She was always quick to greet friends and acquaintances alike.

Corky's three sons each spoke lovingly about her, and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren were living testimony to her far-reaching influence. Her funeral was well-attended and emotional, all the speakers remembering incidents from their lives, touched by Corky. Of the many hats worn by Corky during her long lifetime, perhaps the most significant of all was that of mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will long be remembered by so many of us, friends as well as her extensive family. Condolences to Mickey, Corky's sons, and their families.
