RABBI’S MESSAGEChag HaAviv, the Festival of Spring - A Time to Spread Love and Hope

Living in South Florida, we lack a sense of appreciation for the conclusion of a long, hard winter and the beginning of spring. When we lived in Connecticut, we longed to see the first buds of spring appear out of the dark, brown earth. Those tiny blossoms gave us hope that we could soon look forward to the green grass and colorful flowers that would brighten our dreary winter landscape.

It’s no wonder then that our ancestors greeted spring with love songs to God in gratitude for the possibilities that new birth brings. These love songs, found in Shir HaShirim, the Song of Songs, are chanted on the Shabbat during Passover, also known as Chag HaAviv, the Festival of Spring. In Biblical times, Passover, representing the commencement of spring, signified the beginning of a new year. Not coincidentally, this annual new year celebration coincided with our ancestors’ liberation from slavery in Egypt. Just as spring heralds therebirth of nature, so, too, does our liberation from Egyptherald the rebirth of our people.

Each year, with the advent of spring and the commemorationof our people’s liberation, our thoughts turn to love and hope - love for the beauty of nature and hope for the redemptionof all those who remain enslaved. Each year, as we retell the story of our ancestors’ long ago exodus and journey tofreedom, we are compelled to be mindful of those who are living in embittered and narrow places. What role can we play in helping them to find love and hope?

Like the crocus and tulip appearing out of the hard, wintryground, small acts of kindness can bring joy and hope to those who are lonely, suffering, and in need of humancompassion. A simple warm and friendly greeting; a phone call to someone elderly, sick, or living alone; an offer to drive a homebound person to temple; an invitation to share a meal; an offer to pick up items at the store; a handwritten note to thank someone for a kindness they did - all are small yetprofound ways we can spread seeds of love and hope among those who are languishing in their own form of winter, unable to see the possibilities for spring.

Chag HaAviv, the Festival of Spring, is the time to emerge from our own internal hibernation and reconnect with othersthrough g’milut chasadim, acts of loving kindness. ThisPassover, let us follow the tradition of greeting the holiday with Shir HaShirim, words of love. Like the first buds of early spring, may these words lead to acts of kindness that blossominto signs of hope for all those who are still enslaved.

SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCECampfire Stories to Prepare for Pesach

Rabbi Mitchell ChefitzScholar-in-Residence

PRESIDENTIAL Perspective

Ben KuehnePresident

Continued on page 20Continued on page 20

Twenty years into thewilderness, two campfires.

About one campfire, fourgenerations – those who had been grandfathers when they came through the sea, fathers who came with children in tow, boys too young to be in awe of the moment, children born

during the journey that still had twenty years to go.

“Tell us again,” the young ones said. “Tell us again!”

One father began, “You want to know what happened? I’ll tell you what happened. We had our backs to the sea. The Egyptian soldiers were pressing close. They chose to wait for the light of the morning. The moon was full, the tide strong. The wind from the East blew all night long. The sea so shallow, it nearly disappeared. Before daybreak we set out, by dawn we were gone.

“The Egyptian soldiers awoke to an empty Hebrew camp. They chased after us in chariots, but the wind had stopped blowing, the tide had passed. They made it half way across before the sea rose and sealed them in a watery grave.

“That’s what happened. Such a miracle. The wind, the tide, the shallow water, just at that time, to allow us through.”

“That’s not the story,” the young boys said. “Tell us the other story!”

Another father spoke. “Moses cried to heaven about the plight of his people. He heard this response. ‘I hear their cry. I see their distress. Tell them to go forward. As for you, stand on a bluff above the sea, hold your staff high for the Egyptians to see.’

“Moses stood high, extended his staff. Nothing happened. He reached still higher. Again, nothing happened. He turned his face toward heaven and said, ‘The Egyptians are close, we have nowhere to go!’

“From heaven came these words. ‘Why don’t you do what I told you to do?’ Do you remember what Moses was told to do?”

“Tell the people to go forward!” the young boys said.

“Yes, you remember it well. But the people had been slaves three hundred years. They did not know how to swim. ‘Are we to drown?’ they asked. ‘Better to fight the Egyptians than drown in the sea.’ Only one person had faith to step forward.”

“A boy who looked just like me!” all the young boys said.

Temple Israel Transition Time!

Our enduring, glorious, yet complicated history as Jews has shown that our survival and our successes are the results, in part, of our willingness and ability to work together toward

our common goals. Our traditional Pesach (Passover) Festival celebration, a defining moment for all of us through the ages – the vital story of our people retold through every generation – is a living narrative of our coming together as a family, as a community, and as a nation. During our illustrious journey, we have formed the bonds of community as our leaders have helped to guide us from generation to generation, honoringthe requirement of “B’kol dor v’dor – in each and everygeneration.”

Within our own home at Temple Israel, we know the sustaining power of community during our journey to our 90th Anniversary. New family members join us, are embraced by one another, and become the teachers, leaders, and volunteers who help us grow. But we cannot and do not forget those who have come before us. We need only gaze across the history-laden walls of our Bertha Abess Sanctuary, or consider the names of the volunteers, leaders, and members whose contributions have helped us become the best we can be, to understand the value of Honoring Our Past as Our Legacy for the Future.

It is with this sense of continuity that I bring you exciting news from your Board of Trustees: We have named oursuccessor to Rabbi Jody Cohen. Commencing July 1, 2012, we are honored to invite Rabbi M. Thomas Heyn and his wifeAllie into our Temple Family. Ordained at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio, and currently the Congregational Rabbi for the Brattleboro Area Jewish Community in Vermont, Rabbi Heyn continues our enviable tradition of profound spiritual clergy leadership as we start the countdown for Temple Israel’s centennial celebration! Temple Israel will have many and more opportunities to bring Rabbi Heyn and Allie into our community. We can all look forward to making a welcoming place for them in our warm, caring, engaging, and inspiring family.

Just as Rabbi Heyn will be the newest member of our “team” at Temple Israel, our community could not grow or function without all of our other members – all of YOU. Temple Israel is every one of us, from our spiritually uplifting Clergy, to our dedicated administrative and support staff, to our religious teachers, our Sisterhood, our Dorothy Serotta Social Justice Forum, the committees and sponsors bringing us exciting,

artist David Moss gave a description of his beautiful, hand crafted Haggadah and explained that unlike other holy books, like the Torah or Megillah, the Haggadah must have picturesso that no matter where Jews have come to live in theDiaspora, they can identify the elements of the meal with the foods available in their own communities that most closely resemble the ideal portrayed in the book. The Haggadahtherefore, can be used as a manual for one’s personalrecounting of the miracle of the Exodus.

But if there is nothing else our modern education system has taught us is that every child learns differently, and not every person is as adept at reading an instruction manual, so the Haggadah has to be more than that. Thus the story of the four children is provided to remind us that it is not enough to hear the answers; one must explore the right questions, and beyond that one must know in what spirit one must ask these questions. Literally they are described as wise, rebellious, simple and silent.

I, myself, am one of four daughters—each with differentpersonalities, strengths and abilities. Regardless of each of our understanding of the story, the obligation my parents and grandparents had was to tell the story in such a way that each of us could experience this miracle.

Beyond that as individuals, we all possess many qualities that change over time. The story of the four children reminds us that even as adults, even if we make the effort to be present, to participate in the story, the story will not be the same: our frame of reference, our situations and our perspectives change so that each year we can hear the same words, yet learn something new that will lead us on our personal journey to the redemption.

Each year, we renew our quest together with the people with whom we share this experience, to discover the meaning of this lovely ordered meal by recounting what happened to our forefathers, not just by hearing the story, but by experiencing the exodus with all of our senses- the wonderful smells from

Four ChildrenEach Passover we are commanded to retell the story. The youngest at the table asks four questions, and as part of the answers we areoffered the example of the four children.

NOTES FROM THE CANTOR A MUSICAL INTERLUDE

Alan MasonDirector of Music and

Doctor of Musical Arts

by Dr. Alan Mason

Cantor Michael Glozman

Sharing memories togetherWe’ve successfully completed our 3rd Purimspiel together. I want to share with everyone how much fun it was working with our group and even more special to watch our Congregation enjoy the evening.

This year was especially fun as we all drifted back in time traveling to Woodstock and learning about Peace and Love. The Sanctuary rocked and as everyone left the room was filled with positive energy and the good mood stayed in the air for days.

This year’s version of the annual Winter Jewish Music Concert at Temple Israel of Greater Miami was the program’s best in its four years of existence.

The concert, which recently took place and featured 27 musical artists, including local cantors and program directorAlan Mason accompanying them, seems to get better every year. Mason’s direction of this sensational spectacle was equaled by the chemistry he shared with the performers as he accompanied them while playing the piano. The singers all gave powerfulperformances while providing the highest level of musicexecution possible through a variety diverse range of musicsuch as Ladino, Israeli, folk, Yiddish, pop, classical, hazzanut, jazz, rap and tango.

The concert’s vibrant tone and upbeat atmosphere was set during the singers opening processional performance of “Ki va Moed.” The audience was then treated to the performers putting forth their best efforts through renditions of Jewish-inspired music that provided a spiritual and lively presence in the room. Mason’s piano playing flowed very well with the singers’ performance. A highlight from the concert included Martin Bookspan, former host of the PBS series “Live from Liberty Center,” serving as special guest host.

Highlights from the cantors’ performances included Zachary Mondrow of Temple Torah of West Boynton Beach providing a powerful performance of “V’Li-rusholayim Ircho,” LisaSegal of Temple Beth Sholom in Miami Beach giving abeautiful rendition of “I Sing I Pray,” Geniene Miller of Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus in North Miami Beach singing “A Piece of the Sky,” Michelle Auslander Cohen of Temple Beth Am in Margate and Temple Beth El of Boca Raton providing a nice rending of “Sim Shalom,” Emily Arnoff Teck of Temple Beth EI of Boca Raton rapping to “We Can Rise,” RachelleNelson of Temple Beth Am in Pinecrest singing “Mirror to My Soul” that brought a spiritual presence to the room, Benjamin Continued on page 24

7PMThis month Central Chavurah leads off with a topic

which causes concern in ever increasing intensity:Jews and the Rising Power of Islam

Hmmm . . . Does this announcement look familiar to you? If your answer is“yes,” it’s because this was our announced topic for the March meeting.

Due to last minute circumstances, we were unable to present the program, Jewsand the Rising Power of Islam, but such an important topic cannot be skipped over.

Therefore, we offer it for our April meeting. Please come to help us sort out themultitude of views we hear and see concerning this subject on our televisions,

in the newspapers and in many books. Rabbi Eric Yoffie, immediate past-president of the URJ has urged that we find thevoices of moderation within the Islamic community and to engage in dialogue with

them. Rabbi Yoffie wries, “While we have had our successes and failures in this effort,we must not desist in this task, for we are stronger and safer when we transcend our

fears and work together. Sensible religious people have the obligation to to dosomething when fanatics kill in the name of God.”

Our discussion, as in past sessions, will be moderated by Rabbi Larry Halpern. All Temple members and their friends are welcome to be with us for an exchange

of ideas on this important topic.

NOTES FROM THE ECC

Melba LeimanDirector of Administration ECC

Valeria MichanieDirector of Education ECC

...........................................................................................................................................................................................

It’s Matzah Time Again! The Joni & Stanley Tate ECC is getting ready for one of the most important Jewish Holidays: Passover.

In addition to teaching the traditions and rituals of theHoliday, we attempt to instill in our children one of the most important values of the chag (holiday): freedom. Freedom is not a tangible concept for our children, but is the main core value of our school. A free child is one who can express him/herself in different ways-a child who can learn by exploring and asking questions. When children are able to demonstrate their curiosity and express their creativity, they learn toexpress themselves in a unique way. During the early years, children shape their personalities by asking questions and discovering the wonders of life. They make choices andbecome more responsible for their selections.

Through our school curriculum, The Creative Curriculum, we provide a guide to develop appropriate practices. Through-out this curriculum, teachers acquire the guidance, support, and freedom to be creative and responsive with children. Because children learn from daily interactions with their en-vironment, their peers and their teachers, they build a solid foundation that helps them develop their learning.

With the combination of The Creative Curriculum and the Jewish Curriculum, we help our children shape their Jewish Identity. They begin to understand how Matzah is prepared by exploring the wonders of yeast and comparing whathappens when we use it to what happens when we do not. They learn more about the characteristics of Matzah and bread by smashing both. They discover the colors of the chag by decorating Matzah boxes. While tasting the Matzah, we will recreate the Passover story.

When ECC children are singing Ma Nishtana Ha-laila Ha-Ze Mikol Ha Leilot, “What is different on this night from the rest of the other nights?” they are expressing the curiosity we try to nurture. Passover is a time for the children not only

learn more about their Jewish history but about how they are connected to it, and how they can embrace this identity.

ECC Free expressions of ArtPassover is a celebration of freedom. Here, at school we will celebrate freedom through art.

That’s the reason we will have our Fourth Annual Art Gallery called: “Free Expressions of Art.”

All the classes will be working on different parts of thePassover story, and on April 4th, after our Passover Seder, families will have the opportunity to walk through our Art Gallery and buy their child’s art project. Families will selectthe price for their child’s art project, and all the moneycollected will be donated to the Lotus House. This is awonderful opportunity to combine art, love, compassion and care for others in need.

This year, our Art Gallery will have the honor of receiving a special gift donated by the prestigious artist, JonathanHuxley. This past January, our children from the Multiage PK class visited one of our parents’ Art Gallery: Waltman Ortega Fine Art. This gallery was founded in Paris and is a contemporaryfine art gallery located in the Wynwood Arts District inMiami. They specialize in painting, sculpture, and photography, and they represent a group of emerging to mid-careerinternational artists. During our visit, Jonathan Huxley wasexhibiting several art pieces. Our children loved them all and did a special project dedicated to honor the artist’s style. Aliona Ortega, Lucas’ mom from the Multiage PK Class and owner of the Art Gallery, sent the project to the artist. As a symbolof his gratitude, Mr. Huxley decided to donate one of hismasterpieces, valued at $22.000, to our school. His Art Work will be proudly displayed in our school hallway.

If you are visiting Temple Israel during the Passover week, please stop by and enjoy the masterpieces made by our own artists and the special masterpiece donated by Jonathan Huxley. A special thank you to Aliona Ortega for making this donation to our school.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWSThe LORD said to Moses, I will rain down bread from heaven for you. Moses said to them, It is the bread the LORD has givenyou to eat. Everyone is to gather as much as they need.Exodus 16:4

From this Torah Portion, we realize how blessed our ancestors were to have food provided for them each day during their journey through the wilderness to the Promised Land. As they began their Exodus from Egypt, they went through so many challenges and difficult times. Yet, they knew that God would always be there for them.

Today, there are so many people in Miami experiencing their own Exodus. They’ve lost their job and their home and end up living on the street or in shelters, including families withchildren. When I see homeless people, I ask myself, where is God? And the answer is simple, God is in every one of us.Judaism teaches that we are responsible for helping others in need. As important as it is for each of us to answer that call to help, we do it best when it is part of a community response.

Now, let me share with you a story. From time to time, one of our religious school students, Emma Berzofsky, and her family make and deliver bagged meals to the homelessliving in downtown Miami. Emma shared with me that there are always more people to feed than the bagged meals will accommodate. When she told me about it, I immediately thought about our magnificent community at Temple Israel which is always ready and willing to help those less fortunate. By working together, we can help more people in need! That is the main reason I invite our wonderful community to join us at the Brown Patio on Sunday, April 15th at 9:15am to help us to feed the homeless. We will prepare bags of food and distribute them to homeless people near the temple. Any leftovers will be taken to the Homeless Assistance Center. If you would like to participate, please bring the following items to prepare the lunches: boxes of Capri juice, fruit cups, granolabars, sliced bread, gum, and dental floss. Please, I urge all members of our community to come on time and help our religious school students work on this Mitzvah Project.

As we approach the holiday of Passover, we are reminded that this time of year is one of rebirth and renewal. We hope this important Mitzvah Project will help a homeless person feel that from despair comes hope.

Purim Carnival ReviewOur Purim Carnival was amazing! We started with the Purim Shpiel , and reading the Megilla with Rabbi Jody and singing and dancing with Cantor Michael. Following the service we all marched in a special parade showing our costumes. We BOO’d every time Haman’s name was mentioned and we laughed with Rabbi Jody’s stories!

Religious School Fundraisers:We would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderfulcommunity in supporting all the school fundraisers we have held in the past few months. Thanks to your generousdonations for the Flea Market we were able to raise $200 for our school! Besides enjoying selling and buying at the Flea Market, we had a unique day celebrating the Greening of Temple Israel. Thanks to the Passover chocolate sale, we raised almost $400. The Annual Purim Carnival event raised $300. All these funds will help our students enjoy special fieldtrips and other programs at no cost!

Camp Coleman NewsIt is with great honor that we announce that 10 students from Temple Israel will be attending Camp Coleman this summer. Our religious school students were honored toreceive 4 scholarships of $500 each from Sisterhood toattend Camp Coleman. Once again, our friends fromSisterhood are helping our students attend this amazing Camp!

Teen NewsOur teens had the privilege to lead a special teen service on March 30th. Special thanks to Rabbi Jody Cohen for preparing our students together with our Youth Advisor Mallie Duboff.I would like to thank our teens for helping me during this Spring Break at the ECC and sorting all the chocolate orders received from Miss Chocolate!

Once again, Temple Israel celebrated one of the most popular Holidays in a unique way: with games, bounce house, raffles, balloon art, face painting, music, the most delicious barbeque and lots of prizes!

Special thanks to Larry Leitner and Linda Datko for building all the games for this special event and to our friends from Sisterhood for hosting the Bake Sale. The Purim Carnival is a community event that connects all our families together!

SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCE

OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHYOn behalf of Temple Israel’s Board of Trustees, Rabbis,

Cantor and Administration we extend our condolences to the entire inmediate and extended family and friends of:

ARTHUR BARKERHusband of Audrey Barker

NURIT KALINISister of Jimmy Gavarian, sister-in-law ofRabbi Jody Cohen and aunt of Ami and

Lauren Cohen-GavarianJEWEL GREENBERG

Mother of Elise Greenberg and grandmother ofAaron Guerrero

LAWRENCE SINGERHusband of Harriet Singer

May their memories be for a blessing and may Godcomfort all who mourn their loss.

“Yes, a boy who looked just like you,” the father agreed. “He stepped into the sea, the waters stepped back. Another step, the waters retreated. He ran into the sea, it openedbefore him. How wide do you think it opened?”

“Just enough for him!” the children said.

“And it closed behind. So each person himself had to choose to step forward. For each person, an act of faith. For each person the waters opened. Each person walked through on dry land.”

“Tell us again,” the young ones said. “Tell us again!”

“Enough now, go to sleep.”

Around the other campfire, four generations – those who had been grandmothers when they came through the sea, mothers who came with children in tow, girls too young to be in awe of the moment, children born during the journey that still had twenty years to go.

“Tell us again,” the young girls said. “Tell us again!”

One mother told it again. “The story of the sea began nine months before when Moses thrust his staff into the Nile and drew blood from the water. Nine more plagues followed,

thought-provoking programs, the pillars of our community who have provided for us in times of need, and the hundreds upon hundreds of members and others who pass through our gates throughout the year. YOU have made us who we are; and YOU will continue to refashion us into who we will become.

That is why I am extending an invitation to you to take anactive role in Team Temple Israel, to bring your time, talents, and dedication into our community. You will find thatopportunities abound and the satisfaction endures. So make that call to Executive Director Marla Towbin to find out how you can bring your passion to Temple Israel. Whether through committee participation, programming, strategic planning, or volunteering in the office, we want and need you to create your special place in our sacred space.

Building the vibrant Temple Israel includes reworking and transitioning our organization into an effective, efficient, and fiscally responsible institution that serves our spiritual, educational, and social needs. We continue to identify how best to keep our Temple and our campus vital to our members and the Jewish community at large as a robust Temple of 400 households. Our history as a Temple of 1,000 + members isa testament to our legacy when the Miami Jewish communitywas quite different from today. Your Temple Board is workingdiligently, with earnestness and an understanding of ourreligious, social, and educational mission, to create anoutstanding spiritual presence and administrative operationthat together serve all our needs. The unfolding process is daring, creative, and ambitious, opening opportunities for every one of our members and members-to-be toparticipate. The Temple Israel of the future will be just

a month between each. That was when we emerged from the crucible of Egypt, head first against the banks of the sea. The waters broke. We emerged through a narrow canalto become the children of Israel, no longer Hebrews. Thetaskmasters who had held us in the womb of Egypt cameafter and, like afterbirth, perished in the process.”

“Tell us again,” the young girls said. “Tell us again!”

“Enough now, go to sleep.”

Fathers and mothers took children in tow, tucked them safely into their dreams.

The grandmothers and grandfathers gathered together around a single fire to recall memories as best they were able.

At first there was chaos. Such confusion. Smoke by day and fire by night. Wind blew across the face of the waters. The waters divided, one side from the other. Dry land appeared. Life issued forth.

But they were so old, their memories so fragmented, one story folded into another.

But what if one or more of our senses was impaired? Are we still fulfilling the mitzvah if we are unable to partake in the seder in the traditional way?

This was a question we needed to ask, and a reality my family needed to face, when, in addition to our dad (z”l) becoming legally blind due to macular degeneration, his health required that he be fed through a surgically implanted tube. Knowingthat I was going to Savannah to be with him and lead theseder during Passover, coupled with knowing his level of commitment to Judaism and to his traditional roots, I realized that this Passover could prove to be a challenging one.

I did a google search and a rabbi search, including many of whom I count among my close circle of friends, to see if in the universe there already existed a seder which does not focus on the tasting of food. Each rabbi I spoke with said that although it was an excellent idea, they were not aware of any seder which existed…and each of them encouraged me to create it…so create it…I did!

It seemed like an arduous task, but I was both motivated and obligated to figure it out for my dad. Because just as it was the obligation of my parents and grandparents to tell the story, it was now my obligation to tell the story in a way in which my father could once again experience the miracle.

Amazon.com and JLevine Booksellers were very happy with me as I perused their sites in an effort to find and purchase just the right combination of text, illuminated Pesach art, and music from which to create our very own sensory seder. Please make sure to visit Dr. Andrew Gottlieb’s showcase where you will find the Towbin Family Unique Sensory Seder Haggadah and materials on display.

Like Moses in the desert, one does not really know what they are capable of accomplishing, unless they challenge themselves.

Wishing you and your loved ones a zissen (sweet) Pesach.

Matis of Shleter Rock Jewish Center in New York providing“Hatei Elokai,” Luis Cattan of Beth Torah Benny Rok Campusin North Miami Beach performing “Ilu Finu,” and CesarBeliniski of Temple Beth Torah-Tamarac Jewish Center singing“Amen” that proved to be a fitting closure to the soloperformances. These are just a few of the brilliantperformances that the singers gave. The concert ended in a joyful celebration of all the performers that should entice guests to return next year.

Those who missed this year’s concert can always catchit next year. This annual concert is one that should beseen at least once and the music appeals to people of allbackgrounds. The date for next year’s concert is set for Jan. 19, 2013 at 8 p.m. at Temple Israel of Greater Miami.
