How do we know what someone means when they speak to us? How do we determine the intention behind the words, the emotion that drives the sentences, the ultimate meaning of what the speaker is hoping to communicate? ese questions have taken on great urgency in the digital age.

I’m talking to myself and allowing you to listen in.ere was a time when people communicated in one of only two ways: through direct speech, or a

long hand-written note. ose days are long gone, never to return. Every once in a while – in my spare time – I enjoy reading personal correspondence that was written

in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. ere was an art form for the personal note. Language was elevated and poetic. Metaphor was lavishly used, enveloping the reader in a owing stream of soothing warm water. Many of these letters were worthy of publication, which is how we know of them today. In the rich language and imagery of those notes, one can discern the clear meaning of the author.

e spoken word has a much dierent dynamic than the written. Voice inection, facial expressions, body movement, the rhythm and spacing of the words, all combine to give sinews and arteries and esh

to the skeletons of words. We know what someone means, on a simple level, more by how they speak than what they speak. Even still, in real, live, human face to human face encounters, there are misunderstandings. Because once the words are spoken,

the next step in the process of discerning meaning is to hear the words. Most of us listen by ltering the speech through our own matrix of values, our own experiences, our own insecurities and inadequacies. Usually, we listen only to be able to formulate a response, which is not really listening. In the process, we hear what we want and need to hear, not necessarily what the speaker intends for us to hear.

Most of us communicate these days through email and texting. Even though these are written words, they are as far from the art form of the long hand-written note as a doodle is from a Rembrandt. Emails and texts have replaced phone calls. As a result, they are written speech, designed to quickly provide information and opinion without the elevated language and use of metaphor. ey are silent, disembodied words, devoid of all of the other means of interpreting speech that are provided by a live conversation. at is why we read those words using the voice in our head, not the voice of the speaker. And that is why this new technology has made life more dicult instead of easier; more contentious instead of connected.

Part of our hardwiring, actually a remnant of our hunter-gatherer cave dwelling days, is the ght or ight response. Complicated physiological systems are activated when animals nd themselves in situations that threaten harm. An instantaneous decision must be made evaluating the amount of the danger, the imminence of the threat, the options for response. e autonomic nervous system shifts into high gear, releasing a waterfall of hormones that prepare the body for battle. Epinephrine is released by the adrenal gland which ignites a chain reaction of hormonal secretions that heighten blood pressure and blood sugar, suppresses the immune system, turn fatty acid into available energy that prepares the muscles for a violent confrontation. e ght or ight response provided animals with the mechanisms to rapidly respond to threats against survival. is evolutionary gift is used when a grazing zebra senses the presence of a lion nearby, or when a rat sees the cat coming its way. And now, apparently, it is not uncommon for the ght or ight response to kick in when a human being reads emails.

Far too often, when reading an email or a text, when given a choice of deciding the meaning of the silent words, we automatically go to the dark side. Do the words “yeah, right” mean the writer agrees or disagrees with your idea? How about, “oh, sure,” or “you don’t say?”

e truth is, upon reading these words, we don’t know if they are positive or negative in their intent. at is why Yehoshua Ben Perachia (Nasi of the Sanhedrin in the latter half of the 2nd century BCE.) said to judge every person on the scale of merit (Mishnah Avot 1:6).

So when someone texts you, or sends you an email, and you feel your pupils dilating, and your blood pressure rising, and your heart beating out of your chest, and your muscles tightening, stop. Know that you are not a zebra, and there are no lions in the neighborhood, and there is no threat to your survival. ere are only disembodied, silent words. Slow down your breathing. Relax your jaw muscles. Read the email again, using the best voice of the writer. Read it a third time, giving the writer every benet of the doubt. And then read it again, from the best part of yourself.

If you do, you will live longer and there will be less conict in the world. I hope you get my meaning. And so do I.

See you in shul.

SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCE WEEKEND

JUNE 13TH, 14TH, & 15TH, 2014RAHEL MUSLEAH

rough the vivid prism of her family’s story, she introduces the distinctive heritage of the Jews of India. Being the seventh generation of a Calcutta family with roots in Baghdad, she shares her rare and intimate knowledge of this ancient community’s history, customs and melodies.

Watch for further information.

It is hard to believe that we are in May and that the Gesher school year is about to end....

It certainly was a year full of learning, building friendships and developing a stronger link to our Beth Tzedek synagogue community.

Just few highlights left for May....

May 4th - Gesher students will be dismissed at 11:30 AM and meet at the community's Yom Haatzmaut celebration at the JCC on North Forest Rd.

Gesher students have been asked to perform the song V'shuv Itchem for the community at 2:30 PM.  is year's celebration has something for everybody! Some of the activities include: Bedouin Tent, cooking classes for healthy Israeli food, making chocolate balls, speaker, Torch/candle ceremony, decoration-making, crafts, archeological dig, climbing Masada, games, bounce house, Krav Maga, story telling and, of course, lots of Israeli food!

May 18- Last Day of Gesher, closing ceremony at 10:30 followed by our closing BBQ sponsored by Brotherhood.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the teach-ers and Lori Morrison who have worked tirelessly at making this year a great success. I especially want to thank the parents and students who have made Gesher part of their family’s commitment.

Wishing all of you a great rest of the year. See you in shul!

From the Gesher School:

Well, Pesach has come and gone and the spring owers are beginning to bloom. So that means that our Sisterhood

events are winding down for now. We do have one more event that I hope to see you at before we take our

summer break. e past presidents of Sisterhood are hosting a Mothers and Others Fashion Show and dinner on Tuesday May 13, at 6:15. e fashions are courtesy of Stein Mart. e evening includes a wine bar, hors d’oeuvres and dinner.

e year has gone by so quickly and we have held many diverse types of events and programs. I would like to thank all the women who chaired these events during the year. I hope that you enjoyed the programs that you chose to attend. As always, if you have an idea for a program that you would like to see, please contact me.

anks to your generous support, our fundraisers were very successful. From the rummage sale to the Passover ower sale, we have raised needed funds to help support our synagogue. Your continued support of Sisterhood is greatly appreciated and helps us provide you with the programming you want to see.

As you enjoy your summer, please know that the Sisterhood board will be hard at work planning for next year’s programs, events, and fundraisers. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire Sisterhood board for their dedication and commitment. It has been a pleasure to serve as your president.

Chris Stromberg, Sisterhood President

Tuesday, May 27, 7:00 pm:

Farewell to Catering ManagerAlicia Bykowicz

e (former) Catering Committee of Temple Beth Tzedek announces, with deep regret, the resignation of our Catering Manager and Chef Alicia Bykowicz.

On behalf of the former Catering Committee, I wish to express our thanks and gratitude for Alicia’s dedicated service.   She grew with us as she learned kashrut and how to manage our kitchen, and, for the rst time, made it a prot center for our synagogue. Alicia added many new systems and cost controls to our catering service, and ensured that our kitchen maintained the highest standards of New York State Health Department rules and regulations. From Janu-ary 2013 to January 2014, she prepared meals for over 200 events, from simple kiddushim to Shabbatot, Bar and Bat Mitzvah kiddushes to take-out nights and organizational luncheons and dinners.  On a moment’s notice, regardless of what she was doing -- whether at home, on vacation, or serving other synagouge needs -- she was the mainstay of our Kesher meal program, preparing over 271 meals for our congregational fami-lies in need, always with respect and  a friendly smile. Alicia was always willing to learn and make positive suggestions to enhance our catering program. We thank her for her dedicated service and wish her the very best in her new endeavors!

BOYZ’ IN THE HOOD(BROTHERHOOD)

ere was something shy in the air on April 6 when Mark Russ Federman came to town. And TBT Brotherhood is responsible.

Federman, owner of the famous appetizer shop Russ & Daughters in New York and author of Russ and Daughters, e House at Herring Built, spoke to several dozen guests as part of the JCC Book & Arts Fair, co-sponsored by TBT Brother-hood.

e grandson of the store’s founder, he captivated and entertained listeners with his humorous stories of his family and their fourth-generation store, which is now in the hands of his daughter and nephew. And

that was preceeded by, of course, a kosher lunch of smoked sh, just to get everyone in the mood. What a great time!

is month, we’ve got a couple of events coming up. First, on May 9, Brotherhood members will lead Friday night Shabbat services, demonstrating the broad range of skills of our Brothers, and why we’re an essential part of the TBT community. at will be followed by a congregational Shab-bat dinner. Call the oce at 838-3232 to make your reserva-tion. Don’t miss it!

en, on May 18, we’ll team up with Gesher School again for the second-annual End-of-the-Year BBQ on Lag B’Omer. We’ll be grillin’ up some great tastes, and serving it all up to you. So mark your calendars!

Remember that we’re always open to ideas and input from you, our members and guests. As always, I’m available anytime. I can be reached at (716)636-0514 or [email protected]. I look forward to seeing you at the next Brotherhood event.

Until then, we are….

Together in Brotherhood,

Jonathan D. Epstein

President
