In days of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, beginning in the month of Elul, the High Priest would sequester himself in solitude, using the next forty days to prepare himself for the celebration of Yom Kippur. When the holy Day of Atonement arrived, the High Priest would ascend the Temple mount, enter into the sacred enclosure of the Temple, and enter into the inner sanctum of the Holy of Holies.
And there, in the single holiest place in the world, behind the curtain, he would see … nothing.
Why? After the Babylonians conquered Jerusalem and destroyed the First Temple in 586 BCE, the holy Ark of the Covenant was lost, and unless you are a fan of old Stephen Spielberg movies, never found. The Holy Ark, which contained the tablets of the Ten Commandments, disappeared after the First Temple was destroyed, and so when the Israelites returned from Exile in Babylon and built the Second Temple, the Holy of Holies remained empty. When the Roman General Pompey conquered Jerusalem around 63 B.C., he demanded the privilege of entering the Holy of Holies. When he did, he came out saying that he could not understand what all the interest was when it was only an empty room.
But even in the Second Temple,
the Holy of Holies remained the most sacred place in the world. Its holiness was found in what the High Priest brought in there.
The first thing that would be brought into the Holy of Holies was a pan of burning incense that would fill the entire enclosure. The Hebrew word for fragrance is Reiach and the Hebrew word for spirit is Ruach. What was simply an empty space was filled with spirit; it was there the High Priest offered the fullest expression of his soul.
The Prophet Isaiah taught that
God’s presence fills the entire world. Drawing on this verse, the Hasidic sage Rabbi Menachem Nachum of Chernobyl taught that God’s presence can be found anywhere, in anything, and in everyone. Sacred space is found when we connect the holy core deep inside of us, with the holy essence we find in our world and in our lives.
We often think that holiness is found only in awe-inspiring, grand, and majestic places – Niagara Falls or the Grand Canyon or a tranquil spot in the Florida Keys. But holiness is also found where we teach our children to read, where we take a walk with a parent, where we renew our love and devotion with a beloved. Sacred space is made where we sanctify a single moment – where we make holy moments happen.
Over the summer, we have been working hard on the renovations to our sacred space at Temple Beth El. I hope the enhancements we make to the Rabbi Merle E. Singer Sanctuary will make us feel more inspired for worship and prayer.
But these renovations mean nothing without the spirit each of us will bring. What makes Temple Beth El sacred space is the holiness of our spirit that we infuse into it.
The creation of sacred space requires time, effort, and deliberate intention. But the impact of harnessing our collective spiritual energy will make Temple Beth El sacred space for us and for generations to come.
In the new year 5778, may we be inspired to draw from the deep reservoir of spiritual sustenance that lies within each of us, and fill our homes, our congregation, our community and our world with its holiness and peace. L’Shana Tova – may we all be inscribed for a year of blessing.
And there, in the single holiest place inthe world, behind the curtain, he
would see … nothing.

Welcome NEW AND RETURNING MEMBERS
A MESSAGE FROM MARK SUNSHINE
Greetings from Your New President
Mark Sunshine Temple Beth El [email protected]
I don’t speak Hebrew.I cannot lead prayer or Shiva and have never
worn tefillin. My favorite food is the cheeseburger. At “Jewish” conferences when I meet “more
observant Jews” who seem to know a lot more “Jewish stuff” than me, I feel out of place.
I am just like millions of Reform Jews, i.e., my “Jewishness” is long on culture and short on ritual.
So, how can I be president of our Synagogue? It’s really very simple: I won’t allow anything to
stop me from embracing synagogue life. Every one of us comes to Beth El with a different set of skills and training, even the synagogue president. But, we are a “big tent” congregation where everyone is embraced,
no one should feel inadequate, and each of us is inspired to explore our Jewish tradition and to grow.
My formula for spiritual growth and engagement is to find prayers and traditions that relate to my everyday life. The Hashkiveinu, an ancient prayer,
is such an example. The Hashkiveinu is a petition to God to protect
us from the dangers and perils of the night; an entreaty for the Lord to shelter us while asleep and totally vulnerable to our enemies, sicknesses and fears. It was written during ancient times when nighttime and sleep were fraught with physical and emotional danger.
Most nights, before going to sleep, I recite my version of the Haskiveinu.
How does the Haskiveinu relate to my daily life? Even though I am not afraid of being killed in my
sleep, my nephew was; while I believe I will wake in the morning, my father died in his sleep; and despite the fact I do not get nightmares, when I had an extended stay in the hospital, the nights were long and terrifying.
The Hashkiveinu tells me that at night I am not alone, I am no different than our ancestors and that spirituality is not reserved for “more observant” Jews. It helps me remember the past and gives me comfort about the future.
Over the years I have learned that the gift of Judaism is available to everyone, even those like me who are Hebrew challenged. We only have to be willing to listen and participate.
…my “Jewishness” is long on culture and short on ritual. So, how
did I become president of our Synagogue?

Moving Towards Our Own Sacred Space
Steve Kaufman Temple Beth El Executive [email protected]
CONSTRUCTION UPDATE ON THE SANCTUARY Construction is moving along well for the major renovations to the Schaefer Family Campus related to the Fulfilling the Promise Capital and Endowment Campaign.
We are excited to unveil the newly refurbished Sanctuary at the upcoming High Holy Days services.
The renovations at the Schaefer Family Campus are not merely cosmetic. Our goal is to create spaces that spiritually move our members and guests. In the Singer Sanctuary, not only is the wood on the Ten Commandments lettering being refinished, but Jerusalem stone is being added on the wall behind the letters. The letters will be
set into a niche with intentional lighting. The Ten Commandments will become a focal point and artistic element in the Sanctuary.
In addition to a complete refurbishment and refinishing of our beautiful Ark, Jerusalem stone will be added on the rear wall behind the Ark. The bima renovations include a new central Torah reading table in the center of the bima which will bring the rabbis and cantors closer to one another and closer to the congregation.
Our hope is that all of the renovation decisions we make throughout this complex process never lose sight of our mission to inspire a passionate commitment to Jewish life, learning, community and spiritual growth.
Please note that the staff and Clergy have now relocated to their temporary offices where they will be situated during the construction period. During business hours, enter through the courtyard to reach the offices. Use the main entrance for Shabbat and other services. There are plenty of signs to help you out. We will provide additional construction updates in the Chronicle and Facebook, so stay tuned!
DEDICATION OPPORTUNITIES STILL AVAILABLE:• Tzedakah Center Naming $350,000• Cantor’s Office $100,000• Chapel Sound System $36,000• Beit Midrash Ark $10,000
There are many opportunities available at all donation levels. For further information, please contact Eliza Prince-Atias, Director of Development, at 561-391-8900 or [email protected].
Historical dedications will be preservedDuring construction, the dedication plaques on physical items will be removed. All historical dedications will be preserved once construction is completed. If you have any questions on a dedication or plaque please contact Eliza Prince-Atias, Director of Development, at 561-391-8900. We look forward to recognizing all of our generous donors in new ways when the building is finished!
You will see many changes to the sacred space on our beloved
Schaefer Family Campus this High Holy Day season, and know that
it is not too late to participate. Many crucial items still remain
unfunded, and we count on you, our generous members, to
complete the construction project!
Our goal is to create spaces that spiritually
move our members and guests.

Don’t know what an “aleph” is? Want to read along with the prayers in Hebrew? Know the basics but want to go beyond? Join us for opportunities to learn and expand your Hebrew with Temple Beth El clergy.
“Hebrew Marathon,” designed to teach rudiments of the language to adults in a single day, is back again! Most adults already know some Hebrew, such as mazel tov, l’chaim and shalom. Students are taught to read those familiar phrases in Hebrew, then given tools to learn more Hebrew on their own. Additional classes on prayers and conversational Hebrew will follow.
If you are thinking about starting Adult B’nai Mitzvah in November, this is a great first step or refresher. RSVP at tbeboca.org/adult-education or contact the clergy office with questions at 561-391-8900.

OCTOBERSo Soon SukkotRabbi Jessica BrockmanTuesdays – October 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, 2017As Yom Kippur, the Day of Repentance ends, the first nail is hammered into the Sukkah and we prepare to rejoice. In Hebrew, Sukkot is called Z’man Simchateinu, the time of our rejoicing. According to Maimonides, the happiness of Sukkot is not just about an individual’s emotions, but about our community that we connect with as we go through the High Holy Days. We will examine that transition from repentance to happiness and what it all means.

Introduction to JudaismWednesdays, October 25, 2017-March 14, 2018 7:30-9:00pm Schaefer Family CampusThis weekly course taught by the clergy and other experts covers topics such as holidays, customs, life-cycle events, values, theology, prayers and rituals, Jewish texts, history, and Hebrew. There is an expectation that one will complete weekly reading assignments. At the end of the course, there will be a comprehensive short answer review given to those individuals who are pursuing conversion.
Introduction to Judaism is open to Jews and non-Jews alike. Often, a Jewish partner, friend, or family member will choose to accompany the prospective convert to the classes. This class is useful for non-Jews who do not intend to convert but are interested in learning more about Judaism, and for people who were born and raised as Jews but feel as though they never received a solid Jewish education. Welcoming the stranger is a tradition dating back to Abraham who welcomed strangers to the hospitality of his tent. The Social Action Committee will receive a special blessing on the bima this Sukkot, for the way that they honor the tradition of Abraham, welcoming the stranger through their many social action projects.
Following Sukkot services, enjoy a delicious dinner of Sushi, Sake and Stir Fry while watching the Israeli film, “Ushpizin.” This film is groundbreaking on more than one count. It is a rare collaboration between secular and ultra-Orthodox Israelis and one of the first movies filmed in the insular Jerusalem neighborhood Mea Shearim with ultra-Orthodox actors.
All are welcome to attend this special Sukkot. RSVP for dinner and the movie at tbeboca.org/special-events or call Rosalie Ratner at 561-391-

About the movieMoshe (Shuli Rand) and Malli (Michal Bat-Sheva Rand), an Orthodox Jewish couple in Jerusalem, are childless and without means to celebrate the weeklong holiday of Succoth. After much prayer, they receive unexpected money, and Moshe is told about an abandoned shack where he and Malli can properly deprive themselves and receive guests. However, they are visited by two ex-convicts with an unexpected link to Moshe’s past, and the celebration becomes a series of emotional trials.

A fist bump with the staff. A friendly hug. A joke for the clergy. These are all some of the ways we want to empower our children to feel comfortable at Beth El. Playing games, laughing out loud, and singing songs when they are here for religious and Hebrew school are normal sounds heard most of the time that the children are at temple.
When we gather for services, the atmosphere changes. Parents are accompanying their children, they are dressed up, and there may be a fist bump with the rabbi, but most likely it’s a bit more incognito than it was the day before at religious school. Our children sense from us that the physical temple building is different on the High Holy Days. We have changed our day-to-day space into something special, just like when we prepare our
houses for parties or special holiday dinners. This may feel uncomfortable for your child at first, but it’s OK to settle into that feeling, which will change with time, the more they exposure they get.
Our clergy have created the Family Participation Services to help meet families in the middle. The children will be more engaged and you will still get your full High Holy Day experience. The Young Children’s Service is an additional opportunity for our primary school aged children to get the most out of theses days of awe.
From the jokes on the way to class to seeing the children dressed in their holiday best, we are excited to partner with you to ensure your entire family feels at home at temple and in our community, at all times.

Youth Group is a great way for children to find
their niche at Temple Beth El! Children engage in a variety of social and
Judaic themed events that allow them to bond with each other in an informal educational setting. This
is also a great opportunity for students from both
campuses to interact with one another. Through Youth Group children
have created meaningful friendships and have become one temple
community.

Creating Your Own Sacred SpaceHOW DO WE MAKE SHABBAT HAPPEN?
Over the summer, we enjoyed a very exciting Splish Splash Shabbat. The event included our usual pizza dinner and Tot Shabbat service but it also included fun on the splash pad and a water slide. I had the opportunity to meet and talk with some new families who shared with me their Shabbat traditions. It got me thinking about what makes Shabbat (or a holiday) doable for young families. Sometimes parents reconnect with synagogue life for the first time in many years when they register for the ELC. Occasionally, parents have forgotten what some of the holidays are about and feel they can’t make the home and school connection work for them. So how do we bring customs and traditions home and still feel we can make it work for busy families with very young children in modern day society?
Your children will come home singing Bim Bom. They’ll recite the blessings for the candles and the wine and chant the four questions during Passover. But the truth is, there are many ways to create your own traditions that make Judaism a part of your home.
Shabbat is thought of as a day that is different from the rest of the week. While it begins on Friday evening and continues through Saturday, Shabbat only takes place when we make it happen. For many people that means refraining from work, for others it means spending time with family.
Whatever you choose to do, if you do it with the intention of creating memories and traditions, you can make Shabbat your own unique experience.
Here are just a few suggestions to make Shabbat and holidays special:
• Light candles, sip wine and enjoy challah. Dinner can be anything at all, but shared with family and friends it becomes more meaningful.
• Set aside the challenges of the week and make Shabbat a stress-free time. Play family games; go for a walk on the beach. Better yet, celebrate Shabbat AT the beach.
• Shabbat does not have to include a big meal that involves a week’s worth of preparations. Determine what your family enjoys and make it your weekly tradition.
• Holy experiences are just that. Experiences. These can take place anywhere.
While collective experiences are ritually meaningful, celebrations can occur easily and simply outside of a school or a synagogue. It’s the people you share it with that really matter the most.

n sisterhood update
Shalom from your Sisterhood! So much for the lazy days of summer...just when we think it is going to slow down, life gets even more hectic, no matter the season or time of year. Sometimes, we find ourselves just wanting to be in a quiet space, where we can contemplate and force the pace of life to slow a bit. A sacred space that, to each of us, is holy in a personal way.
What do you consider to be your Sacred Space? Having spent the summer learning, planning and attending Sisterhood events, one’s sacred space could simply mean a place where we come together and feel connected with others, and can share our experiences as Jews and as women. A place where there is laughter, contemplation, and holiness.
With that in mind, Sisterhood had a busy summer, filled with engaging, enlightened activities in “sacred spaces”...
On July 18the, 90+ women filled two theaters at the Living Room Theater for a sold out, amazing Girls Night Out, for dinner and the movie “In Search of Israeli Cuisine”. On August 22nd, after the first general meeting of the year, a book discussion of “The Fortune Teller’s Kiss” was held, along with a Turkish-themed pot luck dinner. The book discussion was graced by its author, Brenda Serotte.
If you haven’t already, please join Beth El’s Sisterhood and be a part of our “sacred space.” View our activities at tbeboca.org/sisterhood and check your email every Sunday for an invitation to Sisterhood events.

n brotherhood update
Andrew H. Zwick, and Alan S. Klasfeld Brotherhood [email protected]/brotherhood
Here we go! Brotherhood’s calendar year kicks off this month and we are pleased to be bringing back some of our most popular events, while introducing a few new ones as well. Summer didn’t exactly slow to a halt for us as we introduced in August our first Brotherhood Poker Tournament. Twenty pokerfaced brothers gathered at The Oak Room at The Oaks of Boca Raton and competed for prizes and bragging rights. We hope to keep this tournament going with periodic meetings throughout the year culminating with next summer’s “Battle of Beth El” as our top finishers compete in a championship final table to claim fame and glory. Look for info on upcoming tournaments in your Sunday Brotherhood Emails.
Alan and I have given thought to this month’s theme of sacred space. As the Schaefer Family Campus gets a facelift and makeover, we reflect on how each of us have places we consider sacred…or holy. In some ways we think our own homes are our personal holy places. We consecrate them with mezuzahs, and decorate them with Judaica. We have ceremonies from bris to Seder…. to Shiva in our homes. Just as we periodically remodel and upgrade our homes so too our Temple is being cared for. Although the finished Temple Beth El won’t necessarily have a “Man Cave,” it’s still a place the Brotherhood members gather to worship, to do good deeds and have fun! Can’t wait to see the finished product.
