DIVREI HA RAV THE RABBI’S WORDS As we turn from the white of winter to the colors of spring, our Jewish calendar calls us to times of challenge and joy. We journey from the rising sap of Tu b’Shevat, the harbinger of spring to the budding of the almond trees throughout Jerusalem signaling that rebirth is eminent. Soon after, we seek out our paraphernalia for Purim – costumes, graggers, Megillah scrolls, Hamentaschen recipes and more. In the midst of an edict of our destruction, Queen Esther wins the day and there is joy and happiness throughout the land. Within a month from Purim, we gather at our Seder tables for the grand home ceremony marks our freedom and deliverance from slavery in Egypt. Our Haggadah teaches us that there are two forms of slavery – physical and spiritual. Clearly, our liberation from Egypt is a sign of our release from physical slavery – what then of spiritual slavery – like many diseases whose symptoms are hidden – spiritual slavery may not manifest itself in visible forms. Our Spring Festival season calls us to witness and engage in rebirth. The question then for each of us is what do we do with the freedom we are granted? How do we celebrate our liberation? Do we seek to find God’s miracles in the everyday in addition to the marvels of the once in a lifetime? In these times when we seek guidance amidst all of the confusion we witness around us, perhaps we need to look beyond ourselves into the realm of the mysterious. This story offers such guidance and inspiration: The Jews of Prague were in lots of danger. Some of the non-Jews of the town were telling lies about them and getting other people angry. There was a danger of a riot against the Jews. This kind of riot is called a pogrom. The Chief Rabbi of Prague was Judah Lowe. He was a great scholar – and he was a student of the Kabbalah, the mysteries of the Torah. One night he took his best student and his assistant down to the riverbank. They spent hours shaping a man out of river mud. Rabbi Lowe said prayers. He put a piece of paper with the secret 72-letter name of God into the mud man’s mouth. He also traced three letters on his forehead. The first letter of the Aleph-Bet, Aleph. The middle letter Mem. The last letter Tav. The three letters spelled one of God’s names, EMET. Slowly, the mud man came alive. He became Joseph Golem, who was like a person, extra strong, who could not speak. The Golem protected Prague. He stopped many people who were trying to frame the Jews by planting false evidence in the ghetto. The Golem protected the Jews from those who would attack them. And in the end the Golem showed the world who the real liars were. As we see the rebirth of life this spring, consider the real miracles we find in our lives and celebrate them. In so doing we bring joy, happiness and our ultimate goal – peace to our world.

FROM THE PRESIDENT . . .

19th

Annual Scheidt Seminar in San Diego, California

Rabbi Aaron Panken Rabbi Rick Jacobs

On February 9 through the 12, I joined fifty-three presidents and presidents-elect from Reform

congregations throughout North America for the Union for Reform Judaism’s 19th

Annual Scheidt

Seminar in San Diego, California. The presidents and presidents-elect represented small, medium and

mega-sized Temples. The seminar was established nineteen years ago, when Rudi and Honey Scheidt

partnered with the URJ. Mr. Scheidt noted that there had not been a training opportunity for him when

he was president of his congregation, Temple Israel in Memphis, Tennessee, and recognized how helpful

it would have been.

We met to discuss solutions to everyday congregational problems, explore Torah-based governance,

improve leadership skills, network and share successful program ideas. Prior to attending the seminar, I

had several questions about the role of a Temple President and what are the benefits for Temple Beth-El

when we pay our yearly dues to the URJ. I was surprised at all of the resources available for our

congregation. All we have to do is ask and we shall receive! I will be sharing these resources with the

Executive Board and Board of Trustees in upcoming meetings.

URJ President Rabbi Rick Jacobs and Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion

President Rabbi Aaron Panken shared how congregations and the URJ can work together to strengthen

congregations. Sharing their expertise with participants were Amy Asin, URJ Vice President for

Strengthening Congregations; Miriam Chilton, URJ Vice President for Youth; Rabbi Sam Joseph, HUS-

JIR Eleanor Sincheimer Distinguished Professor of Jewish Education and Leadership Development; and

Rabbi Lou Feldstein, CEO Dynamic Change Solutions. I was able to share a meal with Rabbi Jacobs and

spent a significant amount of time with Rabbi Joseph learning about the role of a president.

The daily training schedule was long. We began each morning with breakfast at 7:15am followed by

worship and then a day filled with workshops, small discussion groups and panel discussions. Most

evenings concluded at 9:30pm. Our times of moving worship were led by Cantor Rosalie Boxt. She

currently serves as Cantor of Temple Emanuel in Kensington, Maryland, just north of Washington DC.

She created an atmosphere conducive to inspirational and uplifting times of worship.

I encountered one major problem. All of the food served was healthy and junk food was non-

existent! I could not find one pop machine, Snickers bars or salty potato chips anywhere on the grounds

of the resort. I was determined to get my fix of caffeine! So I set out on a mission to search high and

low until I found a Diet Coke! By the second day I found a small gift shop with just what the doctor

ordered . . . but the can of Diet Coke cost me $3.50. Ah, but it was the best tasting cold can of cola I’ve

ever drank!

January 2017 President’s Report to the Board

In my first report of January 2017 I mentioned that my mentors taught me that a servant leader must consider the value of the three “Ts” – Time, Talent and Treasure. I added a fourth “T” – Torah! In keeping with my promise I set personal goals in the areas of time, talent, treasure and Torah.

Personal goals in the area of Time

In the month of January, my Temple related activities totaled 37.5 hours. 1.) I participated in 4 of the 4 Friday night services, one of which was the Installation

Service. 2.) I visited our Sunday school one time and our Hebrew school one time. At the

Confirmation class I introduced myself to the visiting guests from a local church. Rabbi Zukrow explained the ritual items in the sanctuary as well as a brief tour.

3.) I attended one Family Worship service on January 14th. Our kids are amazing and the commitment displayed by parents and grandparents alike is second to none!

4.) I participated in both executive and regular board meetings. 5.) I met with Rabbi Zukrow four times to discuss adult education, member needs,

changes in service times, membership engagement and our “sacred partnership.” 6.) I consulted our Temple Administrative Assistant “Bobbie” six times in January. I’m

amazed at everything she accomplishes for us on a weekly basis. Sometimes she puts it all together with little notice. She is a great addition to our “sacred partnership.”

Personal goals in the area of Talent

“It is my intention to reach out to our membership on weekly basis by phone, personal visits, or hand-written letters as is appropriate in each individual case.”

1.) Rabbi Zukrow and I will be kicking off “Listening Tours” sometime in March. We will keep you up-to-date in TBE weekly news.

2.) I’ve met with one potential new member from my workplace. He has returned to NW Indiana after being in Arizona for many years. He is interested in membership and I will be forwarding him the membership application this week.

3.) In January I was able to write 23 personal thank you cards to various members of our community. I made four phone calls to members and ate two meals with members. We have wonderful congregants!

Personal goals in the area of Treasure

1.) Kim and I have kept up with our monthly commitment to double our dues for 2017. 2.) Kim and I are current on our Brotherhood and Sisterhood dues.

Personal goals in the area of Torah

1.) I participated in two of the two Torah studies in January. 2.) In January, we did not schedule an Adult Education event due to NW Indiana

weather patterns! Thank you once again for entering into this “sacred partnership.” If we continue to engage our congregation, listen to their hearts and assist each one on their Jewish journey, we can take Temple Beth-El to the next level. I’m open to your input and ideas. I humbly ask you to ask yourself the question, “What does Temple Beth-El mean to me?” For this “sacred partnership” to flourish we need your time, talent, treasure and let’s not forget Torah! Submitted 2.21.17

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS Francie Gerson, Facilitator

February was highlighted by our combined TuB’Shevat program with CBI. There

were fun activities, as well as lots of things to learn. Everyone had a great time.

Thank you, parents, for your support. It was especially good to see kids from

BOTH CBI and TBE singing together. Thank you to Terri Hendrickson for making

that possible. We look forward to our next combined program when we celebrate

Passover.

Our 5/6

graders had a very meaningful experience at the 5/6 grade retreat at

OSRUI. I hope they will cherish their good time together. Hopefully that weekend

strengthened their desire to attend camp this summer.

Some of our teens also had a very special weekend attending the National NFTY

convention in Chicago. Whether it’s camp, retreat or Youth group…all play a very

meaningful and lasting experience for our children.

Our next special program when our children will celebrate with religious school

students from other congregations will be on Sunday, March 12 when we join

Illinois (as well as CBI) students at Anshe Shalom for a PURIM celebration. Look for

a special flyer for details. PLEASE MARK THIS DATE ON YOUR CALENDAR to make

sure your child will attend.

Your support and commitment is vital in helping to make your child’s Jewish

education experiences positive and meaningful.

Sisterhood News Judy Stevens, President

This month I will proudly talk about some of the things we do within our congregation. We

provide the Oneg at our weekly Shabbat services, luncheons featuring an assortment of programs

thoughout the year, Rosh Hashanah Oneg and Yom Kippur Break the Fast, Second Night Seder

and Women's Seder attended by our congregation and the community, and the annual Sisterhood

Shabbat led by our members. We provide Jewish ritual objects, plus other Judaic and secular

items for sale in our gift shop. We have and continue to purchase equipment and place settings in

our fully stocked commercial kitchen. We give financial support for Religious school to provide

holiday foods for the students and fund other projects. We give gifts for B'nai Mitzvah and

Confirmation students, and send canteen money for our young summer campers. We have

provided furniture, floor and window coverings throughout the building as the need arises. I am

so honored to be a part of this group.

In the next few months, I will review what we do within our community as part of WRJ Midwest

District and as part of WRJ.

Sisterhood has a very busy few months coming up.

March 18, 3 PM, Game Day. We will play some games, including Mah Jongg. The fun will

continue, with a soup, salad and dessert supper, and Havdallah.

compiled the service and will lead the service. Our special speaker will be Cantor Pam Kreis. We

are truly honored to have her at the service. Mark your calendar to share this special service.

THE TEMPLE BETH-EL ENDOWMENT FUND – WHAT IS IT?

Many Temple members may not realize that in April, 1982, the Board of Trustees passed a resolution creating the Temple Beth-El Endowment Fund, “the primary purpose of the Fund being the long term preservation of Temple Beth-El as an ongoing religious institution.” The designated trustees of the Fund include the current Temple president and all past-presidents. Their charge is “to keep accurate and detailed accounts of all investments, receipts, disbursements and other transactions” and “to file with the Board of Trustees of the Temple a written accounting . . . effected by it during the current fiscal year.” (Resolution document, passed April 20, 1982) A few months later, in October, 1982, Temple commissioned the Tree of Life sculpture currently located on the southeast wall of the sanctuary/social hall. The branches of the tree form the Hebrew words “Etz Chaim”. The original stones at the roots of the tree are symbolic of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. In 2002 twelve additional stones were purchased because the others had all been sold. Actually, this was a “good” problem. Over the decades members and their friends have enjoyed honoring those close to them by dedicating a stone or a leaf in observance of a special occasion . . . significant birthday, anniversary, retirement, birth of a grandchild, bar or bat mitzvah, Religious School class graduation gift to the Temple . . . you get the idea! All monies raised benefit the Endowment Fund. By 2016 we found ourselves in the same predicament. All of the stones had been sold. The Endowment Fund trustees recommended that eight mini trees be added to the Tree of Life sculpture in order to encourage the ongoing celebration of life-cycle events. In addition, the Fund trustees recommended a price increase for both the leaves and the new stone “replacements,” or mini trees, the first price increase since 1982. Effective March 1, 2017, the price to inscribe a leaf is $250 and a mini tree, $600 (motion passed at the February 21, 2017 Board meeting). Perhaps you’ve been in attendance at a Friday evening Shabbat service when a leaf or stone was dedicated. The look of surprise and appreciation on the face of the recipient is always special. Going forward, consider making a donation to the Temple Beth-El Endowment Fund. I will try to do a better job of announcing leaf and mini tree dedications in our monthly bulletin. Because some dedications are a surprise to the individual(s) being honored, please know that donations can always be made “after the fact” as well (the office will notify the honoree). Another option is to simply make a general donation to the Endowment Fund. What a fitting way to help secure the future of our Temple. Stop by the office to pick up a Tree of Life brochure. Indicate the wording you would like to see on the leaf or mini tree plaque, leave the requisite donation (minimum of $250 or $600), and we will process your request. Plan ahead for that special occasion! We generally need at least 3 weeks turn-around time. Questions can be addressed to Linda Dunn (219-923-1910), Helen Gold (219-836-6185), or the Temple office (219-934-9600). I look forward to working with you. Linda Dunn

The next TBE book discussion is scheduled for Thursday, March 2, 2017, at 1:30 pm in the Bertha and Dan Rabin Library. At that time we will review The American Heiress by Daisy Goodwin. “It's a battle of the New and Old Worlds, and for much of this lush look at Edwardian excess and scandal on both sides of the Atlantic, it's tough taking sides. American Cora Cash is the impetuous and spoiled-brat daughter of a flour-making millionaire and a nouveau rich mother from hell, growing up in mansions on Fifth Avenue and Newport at the tail end of the 19th century and introduced to society at a ball where gold-sprayed hummingbirds are released at midnight. But Cora's mother has her one good eye—the other was mangled in a bizarre wardrobe malfunction—on just one prize for her only daughter: a title. Cora, only too happy to free herself from her overbearing mother, happily obliges and, once in Jolly Ol' England, literally falls in front of, and in love with, the handsome and mysterious ninth duke of Wareham. But plopped into a chilly English castle and laughed at for her American ways by high- and low-brow alike, Cora discovers she's merely traded prisons and has to use some Yankee resilience and resourcefulness to unravel her stubbornly aloof husband's dark secrets, win his heart, and earn her place. Television producer Goodwin's debut is a propulsive story of love, manners, culture clash, and store-bought class from a time long past that proves altogether fresh. (Publishers Weekly, April 25, 2011) Copies of the book are available in the Temple office. Questions? Contact Linda Dunn (219-902-5366). Newcomers to this Temple activity are always welcome!

ADORN THE WALLS OF YOUR HOME

Over the decades many gifts of framed art have been given to Temple. Some have hung on the walls of classrooms, the sanctuary, social hall, lobby, etc. Others never made that leap. In order to “clean house” and make room for future works of art, the Board of Trustees authorized a silent auction at its February 21 meeting. Beginning March 3, please visit the tables set up in the sanctuary and bid on those pieces that, hopefully, will find a place in your home. Proceeds from the sale will be deposited in the Design Fund to help defray the cost of future purchases. Take advantage of this opportunity to both help Temple and add to your art collection.

Annual Marriage Reconsecration

If you are celebrating a multiple of 5 or 10 years of marriage this year, (5, 10, 15, 20, etc.) we invite you to join us on the Shabbat

during Passover (April 14) as we will honor you for reaching this milestone in your life.

Please contact the Temple office to let us know that you will

participate in this service.

Temple Beth-El 5th & 6th graders join

other 5th & 6th graders for the annual

small cities retreat at OSRUI in Wisconsin.

We met students from Wausau &

Kenosha Wisconsin; Rockford, Peoria and

Champaign, Illinois.

Fiddler on the Roof Sing-a-Long On Sunday, February 26, we hosted a sing-a-long to Fiddler along with showing the movie. This play was a favorite of our dear friend, Paul Mesirow. His favorite character was Tevya. As many of you know, Paul passed away last year from ALS. We raised funds to support research for a cure and prevention of ALS.
