    Course title :

Academic Organisation : Department of Mathematics and Natural Science Education-

    Study program: Chemistry Education

    Level/class : Undergraduate (Strata-1)/SBI

    Semester : V

weight : 2 CSU (credit semester units)

    Lecturers : Dr. rer.nat Sri Mulyani, M.Si. and Sri Retno DA,S.Si., M.Si.;

Time and Location : Friday from 8:.40 AM to 10:.20 AM in Room D5311

Course Description : CHEM 00282 is a study of the chemical and physical properties ofbiologically important molecules.

Every area of biochemistry cannot be covered in this lectures. So,

a list of topics to be taught, reference books and a list of journals

where contemporary research on all fields of biochemistry are

included in this syllabus as reference. Students are encouraged

to pursue whatever interest subject from these sources.

    Prerequisite

    Corequisite

    :

    :

    CHEM 00272 (Organic Chemistry II)

CHEM 00282 (Experiment in Biochemistry I)

Most of the discussions in the class rely heavily on the

fundamentals of pH, basic cell structure and chemical bonding. For students who feel deficient in these areas, they are

suggested to review freshman chemistry or biology materials on

    these topics

    1. Competence

    Standard

: to introduce students to the philosophy of biochemistry,

structure and function of the major biological molecules found in

living organisms. The content addresses in detail an integrated

view of the molecular organisation of cells the properties of

water and biological acids, bases and buffers, and the chemical

properties of biomolecules (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, &

nucleic acids) and their functions. The course will cover the

fundamentals of enzyme reactions and kinetics, membraneorganisation and transport, digestion system, vitamins, trace

    elements and hormones .

    2. Basic competences 1. To provide the background for further study in biochemistry, biological sciences and some of the health-related sciences.

    2. To develop an understanding of the composition andstructure of complex biological molecules.

    3. To comprehend the relationship between composition, structure and function of biological molecules.

    4. To gain experience in the handling and manipulation ofbiochemicals and instrumentation that is applicable to

    biochemistry

    existence, exploring information, analyzing data)

    6. Being able to discuss information on biochemistry I(Life skill: oral communication, information management, decision making )

    4. Learning Objectives : After successfully completing this course students should be able

    to:

    1. have a basic knowledge of the molecular organisation of cells2. have a basic understanding of the chemical properties of the

major classes of biological molecules which contribute to the

    life of the cell

    3. be able to interpret and analyse problem using experimentaldata relating to the analysis and function of biological

molecules4. begin to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills5. Graduate attributes : Graduates will be prepared to be leaders in their fields by being:

    Environments

    6. Learning resources/

    Textbooks / Materials

: 1. Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry' 5th edition by Nelsonand Cox

    2. Fundamentals of Biochemistry: Life at the Molecular level" byVoet, Voet and Pratt, 3rd edition, Wiley

    3. Journals that carry biochemistry papers, such as: Advances incarbohydrate chemistry, Analytical Biochemistry, Annual

Review of Biochemistry, Biochemistry, Journal of lipid

research, Microbiology and Molecular Biology Reviews,

Nature (on line or from library)

    4. Web-based resourcesStudents are also encouraged to browse through the current

literature on the course-related subjects and to prepare a short

(10-15 minutes) presentation for the class.

    7. Reading Assignments : It is impossible to cover every area of biochemistry research

during the formal lectures. Additional materials may be assigned

as class readings and preparing a short (10-15 minutes)

    presentation to complement the lectures

    8. Teaching Methods : Teaching methods include lectures, discussions, assigned

readings, class assignments & presentation and exams. Lecturesare generally based on the class readings and class discussions to

extend and clarify the lectures and readings. Teaching as well as

learning is an interactive process. For every hour of lectures

students are expected to spend at least three additional hours

    to self study.

Teaching and Learning feedback is performed by lesson study
