Intro To Temperate Grasslands Antarctica is the only continent that doesn’t have a

Temperate Grasslands.

In Asia they’re know as steppes, in Africa they’re know as savannas, and in the US we call them prairies or plains.

Temperate Grasslands are in the middle of being a Forest or Desert. If they receive more rain they would become a Forest, Less would become a Deserts.

Temperate Grasslands have a growing and a dormant season.

Animal Life .1 The animals that live in the Temperate Grasslands

are.. * American Bison * Black-Tailed Prairie Dog * Greater Rhea * African Lion * Black-Footed Ferret

American Bison The American Bison lives in the Great Plains of

North America. Males can weigh up to 2,000. Females can weigh up to 1,100 pounds. The average Life Span is 12-20 years.

African Lion The African Lion lives in the grasslands of

Southern Africa. One or two males will dominate each pride. Lionesses weigh up to 400 pounds, And grow to 6

feet long. Lions weigh up to 550 pounds, And grow up to 8

feet long.

Plant Life 2. ( American Prairie ) The plants that live in the American Prairie are… * Black Walnut * Basswood * Western Sandcherry * Squawbush Sumac

Western Sandcherry When compared to other shrubs the Western

Sandcherry is relatively small and short-lived. When the Western Sandcherry is fully matured

they grow it 7-10 feet tall, and the width would be 6-8 feet.

The leaves go to Red , Dark Red , or purple through the seasons.

Basswood The Basswood is nicknamed ‘ The Bee Tree ‘

because of bees always being near it for it’s flowers.

They can reach up to 130 feet high when fully matured.

Basswood trees have heart shaped leaves.

Human Influence Positive- The hunting of animals have been

banned due to extinction Positive- National parks have been created to

preserve the grassland biome Negative- Hundreds of animals are hunted for

valuble body parts Negative- fires which are started by humans

Weather Late spring and early summer precipitation

usually occurs Summer time temperature’s range around 100

degrees F Winter time temperatures can range around a low

of 40 degrees F

Warnings Continued global warming could turn current

marginal grasslands into deserts as rainfall patterns change

Development of urban areas is increasingly cutting into grassland habitat

Drought-hardy, cold-resistant, and herbicide-tolerant varieties of soybeans, wheat, and corn allow crops to expand into native grassland

Where only one crop is grown, pests and disease can spread easily, creating the need for potentially toxic pesticides
