Mediterranean Lands: Between 30 and 40 Degrees (see figure 1 page

103) On Western side of landmasses Hot Summers: due to dry trade winds Mild Winters: prevailing south-westerly winds

Evergreen Trees:

Small waxy leaves or sharp thorns that don’t lose moisture through transpiration (the loss of moisture through the leaves or bark of a pant)

Trees such as the cork oak and olive have thick protective bark which help to stop heat getting in or moisture escaping through transpiration

Long tap roots reach for underground water (key to avoiding summer droughts)
