What is temperate climate?

• Temperate latitudes of the globe lie between the tropics and polar regions

• Maritime climate VS Continental climate

Page 4: Temperate Climate

• Region’s climate is influenced by maritime airflow from the ocean

• Cooler summers, warmer winters, smaller annual temperature change

• Water has higher heat capacity than soil or rock, thus seawater takes longer time to heat up during summer, but retains the energy for a long time, helping to moderate the climate

• Fairly humid with considerable amounts of precipitation

• British Isles, prevailing southwesterly winds from Atlantic

• Annual average temperature range is 10 degrees celsius

Page 5: Temperate Climate

• Hotter summers, colder winters due to long distance from the moderating influence of the sea

• Soil and rock has lower heat capacity than water and thus gains and loses heat quickly

• Relatively dry as most of the moisture carried by air masses from the sea is lost as rainfall earlier on

• Siberia, Canada, Northern states of US

• Average annual temperature of up to 40 degrees celsius

Countries that experience temperate climates

● Countries that experience temperate climates exist in the two temperate zones

● These zones consists of the tepid latitudes

● The Sun never ranges overhead, and the climate is mild, ranging from a cool to warm climate

Countries that experience temperate climates

Examples of countries:● Britain● Australia● New Zealand

Page 8: Temperate Climate

● Maritime temperate climate● Summer temperatures are generally cooler than

further into Europe due to the cooling effect of the sea.

● Overall temperature is warmer than the rest of Europe and the temperature rarely drops below 0 Celsius or goes above 21 Celsius

● Lowland areas tend to be warmer● Receives an average of 850 mm of rain in a year,

which is relatively high.

Page 9: Temperate Climate

● The climate of Australia varies a lotbecause of its large size

● Only the south-east and south-west corners have a temperate climate and moderately fertile soil.

● Brisbane: 14-26 0C, 1000mm rainfall, temperate

● Cairns: 20-30 0C, 2200mm rainfall, subtropical

An example of how varied the climate is in two different

cities in Queensland, East of Australia.

Page 10: Temperate Climate

● New Zealand has a mostly cool to warm temperate climate

● Winter temperatures are much milder in New Zealand compared to other areas of similar latitude.

● 20-30 0C in summer, 10-15 0C in winter
