Temasek Primary on 22 May 2013. The session kicked

off with a sing-a-long session where the Temasek leaders

Temasek’s Green Efforts

Project Green Earth 2013

Project Green Earth is a collaborative project among members of the Temasek ParentConnection Committee, the school’s Partners Committee and the Temasek Student Leaders. The project is a part of the prefects’ service learning platform to serve and to demonstrate the value of respect. Besides advocating Respect for Oneself and Respect for Others, the prefects promoted the need to Respect Our Environment. They also attempted to raise awareness among pupils and staff on the importance of the green habits.

From 2 May to 3 May 2013, the members of the ParentConnection Committee together with the school’s prefects sold numerous potted plants to pupils and staff during recess. Along with the plants came information about the plants and a mini-guide on their care routine. To encourage recycling, pupils brought their own plastic bags for the potted plants they had purchased.

Terrarium-Building Workshop

To promote Green Habits, our ParentConnection Committee organised a meaningful Terrarium-Building Workshop for 30 P4 pupils. Mdm Kartini, one of the PCC members, prepared the handout for the pupils and mentioned that through the activity, pupils would learn about the relationship between the environment and the plants and their inter-dependence. The activity was also a great way to teach pupils about evaporation and condensation.

Encouraging our P6 pupils

33rd Annual Athletics Meet/ NAPFA Test

The next ‘In Thing’ @Temasek With the recent installation of the queue railing, the school has received positive feedback from pupils and staff on the orderly movement of pupils as they purchase their food from the canteen stalls.

Mr Foo presented every P6 pupil with a special handmade item shaped like a dragonfly to encourage and spur our pupils to be focused and to wish them all the best in the

PSLE.

The 33rd Annual athletics Meet was held on 13 March 2013 at the Bedok Stadium. This is the first time that the House Colours are replaced by the Seven Habits. Each Habit is represented by a competitor from each class. However, there are no changes made to the type and number of events. Congratulations to the Champion Habit – Think Win-Win (Habit 4) and the Champion Cheer Habit – Put First Things First (Habit 3)! The NAPFA Test for Primary 4 to Primary 6 pupils were conducted after Semestral Examinations 1. Primary 4 and Primary 5 pupils took their NAPFA Test from 23 May to 29 May 2013 while the Primary 6 pupils took theirs from 3 June to 5 June 2013. A retest for absentees was carried out during the first week of Term 3.

Temasek Kindness Movement Pupils participated actively in the school-based kindness activity of assembling ‘Kindness Daisies’ coordinated by the Pupil Development department in conjunction with Singapore Kindness SG. Other activities included writing Kindness slogans and poems, in keeping with the theme of “A nation of kindness starts with one”. In celebrating this special event, it is hoped that residents of Singapore will be encouraged to perform kind acts and also show their appreciation when receiving kindness.

Pupils focused on their craft work and happily displayed their handiwork.

Talent Fiesta Temasek Style

The talents of our young artists were evident through the display of their creative art work in the canteen. Pupils from each level were given a poem. Armed with the freedom of expression and creativity, the pupils illustrated their interpretations of their respective assigned poems.

Outstanding-Educator-in-Residence (OEIR) Simon Smith’s first visit to a Singapore school

The school recently played host to Simon Smith, Outstanding-Educator-in-Residence (OEIR) on 27 May 2013. He was impressed with the school’s commitment to developing our students to be passionate life-long learners, a mission that resonates deeply with him. This positive learning spirit was strongly felt during Mr Smith’s interaction with the school staff and pupils. During the Science inquiry-based lesson conducted by Mrs Doris Tan, Mr Smith witnessed not only engaged learning, but also how the school’s values of honesty, responsibility, respect, consideration and perseverance have been imbued in pupils and translated into action, evident through the pupils’ interaction with one another.

Mr Simon Smith observed a meaningful and enriching Science lesson and also participated in the activities with our pupils. Vibrant ASEAN Flowers

In working towards a vibrant arts campus, the Aesthetics department, school staff, parents and pupils were involved in drawing and painting the national flowers of some ASEAN countries including Singapore’s national flower, the Vanda Miss Joachim. The finished products will be used for decorating the canteen tables.

All smiles as our parents and pupils proudly displayed their completed paintings.

Temasekians’ Achievements

Harry Tan (5D) - one of the 31 grand finalists of the RHB-The Straits Times National

Spelling Championship 2013 held on 27 April 2013.

“I took part in the National Spelling Championships in May this year. I was very excited but I was very familiar with the format of the competition as I had participated in it the previous year. I practised for the competition by asking my parents to print out long lists of difficult words and asking my peers to test me on words like, presbyterian, reconnaissance, communique, dachshund and pharmaceutical’, just to name a few. I felt proud when I emerged as one of the finalists. I learnt the value of perseverance through my participation in the competition as I had to work hard to fight my way through the Zonals, before making it to the Finals. This was definitely a memorable experience for me.” Harry Tan (5D)

Theatre Experience & Drama Competition 2013

“I took part in an English drama competition some time ago. We were told to prepare for our act to be performed in front of the judges within around three to four hours. I worked hard and collaborated with my teammate Durga to prepare for our act. After preparing, we performed with confidence and both of us really enjoyed the experience of working together as a team. Once the results of the competition were released, we found out we had won first place! We were overjoyed that we were able to persevere and win the competition for our school. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience for me.”

Robocup Eindhoven 2013 Three of our pupils - Samuel Chin (6E), Chen Hua En (6E) and Ryan Pek (6D) from our Robotics Club represented Singapore in the Robocup 2013 held in Eindhoven, Netherlands from 24 June to 1 July 2013. An estimated 40 countries were involved in this competition. The boys, the youngest among the 2500 participants, demonstrated great enthusiasm and passion for learning. In the Junior Rescue A (Primary), of the 29 countries that participated, our team, Temabot 61, was placed in the 8th position. In the Superteam Junior Rescue A (Primary), Temabot 61, together with their Austrian counterparts from Bestche, were placed 4th out of the 14 teams in the category.

“We (Hua En, Samuel and I) had an enjoyable time participating in the Robocup 2013 in Eindhoven. We prepared for the competition by going for intensive Robotics training during the June holidays, after the Supplementary classes. Although we had prepared beforehand and tried our best, we still did not win. At the competition grounds, there were many people from many different parts of the world, all of different ages and with different perspectives. We saw many different types of designs of robots, programming languages and improvisation skills. From the competition, we learnt that we have to depend on ourselves and that no one can help us if anything goes wrong. Improvisation skills would be needed to solve these

problems.” Ryan Pek (6D)

Reuben Lee (5F) – Received the ‘Joe David’ Award for breaking the 300m and 600m ‘C’ Boys records.

“I feel honoured as the Joe David award is the best award I have ever achieved in my life. It is important to have the end in mind when participating in competitions. My aim was to do well in the 600m individual event and in many other events. I have been training with the school’s Athletics Team since P1 and have shown steady but good improvement in my speed and stamina. This helped me succeed in the 300m individual event, where I broke the record. I also realised the importance of synergy, especially when I had to work with my teammates and this was an important factor when we worked together to break the record for the 4x300m event. I am thankful to my coaches who trained me well and the support given to me by my classmates, Form Teachers and my parents.”
