PRINCIPAL’S PATTER
Hello Everyone,
It is with great sadness we say goodbye to our long
standing teacher and colleague of many years, Mr
Ron van den Beuken (Mr V), who passed away last
week after a long and brave battle with cancer.
Mr V, our year 6 teacher, was extremely dedicated
to the education of children.
We will all miss the wisdom, knowledge and
guidance he was known for at our school.
On behalf of the Balcatta community, we send our sincere condolences to
his family.
At school, we plan to remember Mr V by planting a garden in his honour
with his favourite plants.

Golf WA is responsible for overseeing all aspects of amateur golf for the enhancement of the game. This includes a wide range of Game Development programs in schools to introduce the game & attract new players.
Students from Yrs 3-6 have enjoyed having golf lessons for the past few weeks, organised by Mr Croft and Golf WA.
To celebrate the CBCA Book Week 2019, students from P/P – Yr. 6 enjoyed ‘BIG DREAMS’, a brand new educational & interactive musical performance, presented by ‘Perform! Education’ yesterday. The production incorporated titles from this year’s shortlist celebrating, the theme of "Reading is My Secret Power!”.
Tomorrow, we encourage all students to dress up as a favourite book character or to demonstrate their “secret power”.
We look forward to seeing some marvellous, mighty and super characters!
This week was National Science Week, where schools nationally took part in different activities looking at all things science. The theme for this year was Destination Moon: More Missions, More Science.
To celebrate National Science Week and the 50th Anniversary of the
first landing on the Moon, NASA released an amazing opportunity
for our names to be sent with their next rocket to Mars. During our
science lesson, we registered our names and collected our boarding
passes. Our names are ready to board the rocket ship and land on
planet Mars. We also played around with our new green screen app
on the iPads and took photos with
the planets!

week and some amazing at home
activities, head over to https://www.scienceweek.net.au/.

SCIENCE WEEK
Please save all your plastic
lids from landfill & pop them
in the collection box at
school opposite the front
office.
This awesome, not-for-profit
organisation transforms lids
into prosthetic limbs for children all around the world, and at the
same time providing jobs & helping our environment.
Bottle caps are fully recyclable, however, they are often
sent to landfill. Most of us don’t think twice about
throwing them away, but, one of the positives of bottle
caps are that they are almost entirely made of HDPE 2
(High Density Poly-Ethaline), which can create
functioning filament for 3D printers.
Once bottle tops are collected, they are shred and made into a filament that is then fed
through a 3D printer with a software program that creates the limb. It is quite a lengthy
process compared to normal 3D processes because this type of plastic is quite difficult to
work with.
The patterns can be unique and colourful, designed to make children feel confident and
empowered, like children can request a prosthetic inspired by their favorite superhero,
such as Batman, bringing joy to recipients.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Milk bottle tops, soft drink tops and flat water-based tops are the best to utilise and
recycle – and it is something the school and community, as a whole, can be involved in.

Please come and join us if you have a child or children
