Year 7 - 10 Reports

Years 7 to 10 Reports have been issued today. Any uncollected reports can be collected from the Front Office next term. I urge students to use these academic reports as a stepping stone to further improvements. As I always say to our students, if you haven't performed the way you would like to date, it is never too late to put more effort in and make improvements.

Board of Studies Warning Letters

From time to time, students in Years 10, 11 and 12 may receive letters of warning about assessment or class tasks they have not submitted. These letters are a signal to you that your son or daughter may not be doing as much as they need to do to complete their ROSA or HSC. If the tasks are not completed and/or students receive warnings for two or more tasks, this is a signal to the Principal that he cannot authorise the completion of the course in question for that student. Teachers will always do their best to communicate with you and your child before warnings are sent. If students can't complete tasks, they must see the appropriate Head Teacher, Mr Kingsley, myself or Mr Holding so that we can do whatever we can to help students complete all requirements.

Vacation best Wishes

I wish all our students, staff and families a great holiday. School resumes for staff on Monday 18 July. All students resume on Tuesday 19 July. Happy Holidays!

Into the Woods

Last weekend saw Bellingen High School’s MPC come alive as our students shone

on stage in a hugely entertaining production of Sondheim’s twisted fairy tales.

The whole cast were stunning; who can forget the heartbreaking soaring of Teal

Rees’ voice in her delightfully innocent and kind Cinderella? Liam Mallinson was

his usual commanding self, belting out his solos and performing beautiful, touching

duets. His partner, the hugely entertaining Grace Costello-Ramirez, brought a

quirky humour to the part, combined with the voice of an angel. Jessie O’Connor

debuted as Little Red, an amazing talent and perfect for the role.

Blaise Borrer brought his trademark energy and zest to the role of Jack, his stage

antics were sometimes a little too energetic, resulting in a few bruises and only

matched by his glorious voice and impeccable comic timing. Ella Pepper-Nebauer

played his mother, with grace and humour, singing beautifully.

Ochre Pastro terrified and mesmerised with a powerhouse performance as the

Witch and Rapunzel, her daughter, played by rising star Ella Hollinsworth,

captivated the audience with her melodic wail.

The Princes, Dylan Connors and Hugo Couper brought the house down every

night, with their hilarious, melodramatic flamboyance and majestic vocals.

The cameo roles were all carried out with passion and flair; Janardan Cowell-Curry

was delightfully creepy as the Wolf, viciously attacked by the charming and sinister

Alena Hardinge. Meg Galloway combined a dignified air with superb comic timing

as Cinderella’s evil step-mother, ably abetted by the riotously entertaining step-

sisters, Juno Pepper-Nebauer and Kira Staheyeff. Nelson Couper’s staggering

drunken father was toned down for the primary school audience.

Rosie Stephen controlled proceedings as the narrator with charm and wit. Akashya

Leopold was captivating as Cinderella’s Mother and Liam O’Connor embodied the

Mysterious Man. Marni Besley not only co-directed, but also petrified the crowd

as the Giant. Jordan Neville entertained with his pompous and comic Steward and

also cleverly constructed the real star of the show, the cow Milky White, brought

alive (and dead) by Alana Scheef. He also made a harp, a carriage and some birds;

his talents are endless.

It was very much a team effort, students helped as extras, puppeteers, backstage, as

artists and with props. Tom Ruming ably controlled the atmosphere with his

lighting and Zac Jones ran around backstage helping with the sound.

The Orchestra were, of course, outstanding. Congratulations to all involved across

the faculties and greater school community.

Our School Choir participated in the Arts Unit “In Concert” performance at the

ARIA Awards. The massed choir accompanied Katie Noonan on two songs,

Blackbird and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. These two songs were arranged to

also feature improvised solos from talented students from the NSW Public Schools

State Jazz Band.

Our students particularly loved singing excerpts from the incredible Carmina

Burana with full Symphony Orchestra!! Our other piece was the world premiere

of a new commission by Sally Whitwell for massed choir and orchestra. A fantastic

work when finally sung with the NSW Public Schools Symphony Orchestra.

Special Note:

I would like to thank Ms Pauline Williamson, Mrs Lynette Rigney and Mr and Mrs

Ridgley who travelled down with the choir and assisted students with their needs

during the excursion, it was very much appreciated. Mr Derek Ridgley took some

fantastic photos of students, so if any parent would like to view, please contact Ms

Cochrane (Music) during school hours.

On the subject of supporting parents, a big thank you to the other nine parents

who travelled all the way from the North Coast to watch and support our students

at this wonderful event. It made it a very special night.

Down at the Ag Plot

Students have been busy at the Ag Plot with

lots of great things happening!

Last Friday, Mr Hiller came in for the day to

crutch the sheep and the students enjoyed

having him back here. Mr Hiller spoke about

all aspects of crutching and sheep handling, and

the students were keen to join in.

The oranges are ripe and Year 9 has picked

75kg to sell to local business Bellingen Green

Grocer. The oranges were picked, cleaned,

weighed and delivered by Recess that morning.

You can’t get much fresher than that!

Tuesday Week 1 next term will see our day old

chickens arrive ready for Year 7 students to

weigh, handle and cuddle. Ahhhhh. Early next

term also we will have lambs being born –

double ahhhhh. What a very exciting and busy

Anti-Bullying Production

Brainstorm Productions performed "Sticks and Stones" to our students this week. The production focused on the story of Toby growing up. When things go wrong in Toby’s life, he feels frightened or threatened, he gets all churned up inside. His body tells him to fight, his dad and other kids tell him to fight, even TV shows and computer games tell him to fight. He’s always in trouble and unhappy at home and at school.

He learns to stop, breathe, and put his hands in his pockets, walks away, count to ten and talks about his feelings.

When Toby decides to break the habit and take responsibility for his own actions he begins to develop positive relationships. He stands tall, becomes assertive and co-operates with other kids to create a circus routine, with acrobatics, uni-cycling and juggling.

Indonesian News

On Tuesday 21st June, Year 7 Indonesian students were lucky to have a well-known Indonesian Dance teacher visit Bellingen High School. Ibu Bibi Ahmed is a teacher at Scott’s Head who has been instructing Indonesian Dance for many years.

The Indonesian room came alive with Indonesian music and colour. The students were able to dress themselves in the traditional wide-legged black pants, a sash to keep them from falling down and a wrapped headdress. Once the scene was set, the dancing started.

Ibu Bibi taught the students a traditional Randai. Randai is a folk theatre tradition of the West Sumatran people. It includes music, sound/song and Silat (a type of martial arts incorporating body percussion and beating on the wide-legged pants).

After learning a variety of moves, Year 7 students created rhythmic patterns and traditional segments putting the moves altogether to create energy, sound and dynamism in the dance.

What a fun, exhausting time they had!

He explained the pricing and margins of various items on the menu and promotional activities that had proved successful for the business. The students gained insight into the day to day processes of a real life business. Miss Hill and Year 12 Business Studies would like to publicly thank Paul for his enthusiastic and motivational presentation on his business. We look forward to having his ongoing support of Bellingen High School.

Students compete at Coonabarabran Interschools

Four very talented and dedicated Bellingen High riders made the long trek with their horses in tow to Coonabarabran for the 2016 North West Equestrian Expo. Coona is an enormous interschools event run over five days, attracting up to 600 riders and 700 horses.

Through pouring rain and strong winds, our four riders; Annalie Bardsley, Grace Costello-Ramirez, Emily Stalder and Aziza Yusuf, soldiered on with bright smiles and huge amounts of dedication and enthusiasm for their horses, each other and their sport.

As Team Manager I could not have been more proud of our girls. Under extreme weather conditions, they were impeccable in their behaviour and support for each other and other competitors, and made this event a fun and exciting week for all.

From dressage on the first day, followed by a day of torrential rain, then to cross country, polocrosse and showjumping, the girls gave it their all. Grace and her trusty tall steed Bruno came away with a 1st, a 2nd and a 2nd in the 17 years showjumping, giving her reserve champion; Annalie shone on the agile Astro with a 6th place in the 60cm ODE and 3rd in the 60cm showjumping; Aziza and her speed machine Princess Matsara jumped their way to 7th place in the 80cm ODE, and Emily and the fantastic Fletch jumped a great clear round in the showjumping phase of the 80cm ODE.

Just to attend and compete at Coona is an achievement, but for the girls to walk away with such success for a small school, virtually unknown before the event, was astounding. When I went to the office to collect ribbons, the crowd lined up was looking at me with confusion. 'Where is this equestrian school?' They asked. I could only smile!

A big thankyou to the wonderful riders and parents - for getting up at 4am in Gunnedah to get our regular campsite at Coona, for the great meals and wonderful company through rain, wind, a little bit of sunshine, freezing cold and awesome riding. Great week!

PDHPE News Small Schools Athletics Carnival

Six of our Year 10 PASS students helped out recently at the Small Schools Athletics Carnival held in Urunga.

We had some terrific feedback from the organising Principal, Katreena Meenahan:

Julie Taylor Head Teacher PDHPE/Welfare

“The six students were an amazing help yesterday. Please thank them again on behalf of myself and all of our small schools. Thanks again, it made our day run so much easier, I really hope we can get some students to help out again next year!”

Five Runners qualify for State

Championships

The North Coast Cross Country Championships were held at Murwillumbah on Friday

17th June. Due to the long trip less than half of the Bellingen High School runners

that had qualified made the journey north. Those that did all performed well with

some outstanding results.

The 14 years girls' were outstanding with Willow Neal finishing 3rd, Sophie Keough

6th and Brynne Couper 8th.

Talissa Alford finished 6th in the 17

years+ girls with Jonah Mitchell coming

away with 2nd in the 17 years+ boys.

Well done to these runners who will now all

be travelling to Eastern Creek to compete

at the NSW All Schools Championships on

22nd July.

These runners have all got to where they

are now with no formal training and are

keen to train. Any help in this area would

help these runners achieve closer to their

potential.

Organ Donation - Facts and Statistics Have you decided about organ and tissue donation? One organ and tissue donor can transform the lives of 10 or more people. Australia is a world leader for successful transplant outcomes.

Around 1,500 people are on Australian organ transplant waiting lists at any time.

To lift donation rates the Australian Government, with State and Territory Governments, has implemented a national reform programme, 'A World's Best Practice Approach to Organ and Tissue Donation for Transplantation'.

The national reform programme includes actions to increase clinical capacity and capability and to increase community engagement and awareness in relation to organ and tissue donation.

The Australian Government funds dedicated doctors and nurses in 72 hospitals to work specifically on organ and tissue donation. These positions are part of the national DonateLife Network which also includes State Medical Directors, hospital-based Donation Specialists and Donor Family Support Coordinators.

In 2015, 435 organ donors gave 1,241 Australians a new chance in life.

The number of organ donors and transplant recipients in 2015 was the highest since national records began.

Complementing the significant progress made in the clinical sector, Australia needs more active engagement and awareness within the community to increase Australia's consent rate to organ and tissue donation.

The majority of Australians are generally willing to become organ and tissue donors (69%).

Less than 1% of people die in hospital in the specific circumstances where organ donation is possible. The circumstances in which you can become a tissue donor are less limited.

In Australia the family of every potential donor will be asked to confirm the donation decision of their loved one before donation can proceed.

The most important thing that helps a family's decision is their knowing the donation decision of their loved one.

In Australia approximately 60% of families give consent for organ and tissue donation to proceed.

The majority of Australians (60%) have now discussed their donation decision with their family.

Of the 36% of Australians that feel confident they know the donation decisions of their loved ones, 93% would uphold these decisions.

Every family who is offered the opportunity of donation is able to receive dedicated support from DonateLife Donor Family Support Coordinators, whether or not donation proceeds.

The quality of care for a potential donor at the end of his or her life, and the wishes of their family, is always the foremost consideration of those involved, and is never compromised by the potential for organ and tissue donation.

We encourage all Australians to register their donation decision on the Australian Organ Donor Register and most importantly to discuss their donation decision with family members.
