Genie rolled out a couple ot newproducts at the recent Worid of Concrete,including the latest and final member of itstelehandler family, explains Chad Hislop,director of product management, referring

to the company's newGTH-1256. The newtelehandler will be "aworkhorse for energyand heavy constructionsites," he says, "be­cause it's designed andbuilt to help get heavier

loads to height. You can safely lift morematerial to four or five stories, and whenyou can move larger loads, you're operat­ing more efficiently."

"This is really going to give us a fullline of telehandlers to meet the needsof rental centers and their customersin every single category out there. Withits leading capacity, 12,000 pounds,56 feet of lift height, we're really focus­ing on getting productivity out there onthe job site so the end-users can safelyand efficiently handle the lifts they needto do," he emphasizes.

The telehandler uses the company's"field-proven" military grade chassis,hydrostatic transmission and Danaaxles. Lift the expansive housing overthe side-mounted engine and youhave easy access to oil and air filters.From the back .of the machine, youcan access the cylinder, booms andchains.

The cab is also a productiVity tool•"because it serves as the operator'soffice," Hislop points out. Operatorshave good visibility over the boom'and of the boom when moving andworking; as well as to the sides andrear. An adjustable suspension seatand steering wheel, easy accessto the joystick and visibility of thecontrols, all help the operator staycomfortabie to focus on the job withreduced strain and fatigue. The con­trols are the same across the Genieline, he adds.

Other standard features Hisloppointed out include air-filler tires andfenders on all four wheels to helpkeep the vehicle clean. For 2015, hesays, the telehandlers will also beequipped with a lift shackle. "We weregetting consistent feedback from thefield and our dealers that a lift shacklewould give the machine additionalflexibility, as well as additional safetyand efficiency on the job site," he says.

A: As the building construction seg­ment starts to grow, we are seeing an

increased demand for forkliftrentals. Forklifts are used for a specificperiod of time during the constructionprocess, so many contractors preferto rent rather than buy. Also, asthe industry moves to Tier 4 Final

compliance, the price of machineryis going up which can increase thedemand for rentals.

Q: Have you given these productsmore R&D attention over the pastfew years?

A: With each new emissionsrequirement, we have the opportunityto look at other improvements onthe machines. Based on customerclinics we heid, we saw there wasa strong desire to keep the controlsand braking mechanism similar tothe traditionai models. As long asperformance is maintained, horse­power is not a driving force. However,improving fuei efficiency and comingup with a simple Tier 4 Final soiutionheld strong value.

Q: Have you made any changesin the equipment specifically with therental channel in mind, factors rentalcenters would focus on?

A: As we developed our Tier 4Final strategy, we heavily weighed theimportance of a simple, maintenance­free soiution. This is what drove us touse a Particuiate Matter Cataiyst part­nered with a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst(DOC) solution, which uses a highefficiency fiow through filter and elimi­nates the need for a Diesel ParticuiateFilter (DPF) or after-treatment soiution.The DPF is a high cost maintenanceitem and the after-treatment solutionrequires an additional fluid to beadded. We also maintained a com­mon ITA Class 3 hook style carriageand common controi patterns.

Q: Based on overall marketdemands or needs, has CASEshifted its focus on the rentalchannel in any manner?

A: No - there has been no changein our focus. Rental has always beenan extremely important part of ourbusiness.

Q: We continue to hear thatcontractors are relying more on rentalcenters as their "fleet managers", soto speak, preferring to rent ratherthan buy - at least for now. Basedon CASE's sales into the rentalchannel, and the company's strongdealer netWork, are you seeingthat trend?

A: Both channels are seeingtremendous growth with theimproving economy, but, withincreased costs of emissionssoiutions and economic increasesof materials, some contractors arehaving sticker shock when looking atpurchasing new equipment. This hasbeen driving a slightly faster pace forgrowth for the rental channels thanthe commerciai sectors. We haveseen growth with sale~, not onlywhen it comes to nationai rentalhouses, but smaller local rentalhouses and our own dealer'srental fleets.
