R yan Fricker may still be waiting for his three ‘A’ level results but he can be almost certain that his 63 round Elfordleigh GC in Devon has qualified him for the Abu Dhabi Junior Championship presented by the Daily Telegraph from 24-29 November. “I’m not entirely sure what to expect of Abu Dhabi,” said Fricker, who is sharing second- place with Tomasz Anderson on a boys’ qualifying list led by Tom Lewis, the English Boys’s Under 18s champion, on six under par. “All I know is that I can’t wait for the trip. I’m expecting all sorts of different foods, massive skyscrapers and a golf course that looks like some glorious oasis,” he said. Fricker, a member at Yelverton, got off to the best of starts at Elfordleigh. Having made a birdie at each of the third and fourth, he eagled the fifth before notching yet another birdie at the seventh. A golfer from the age of nine, the now 18- year-old Fricker believes that fitness and temperament are among his strongest suits. His parents were both physical training instructors in the Navy, while his father is nowadays a management consultant concentrating on team leadership. Fricker Snr. has always taught his son to stay “neutral” on the golf course. “I try to forget the bad shots and remember the good,” said the teenager. Ryan, who sat psychology as one of his three A levels, says that Tiger Woods has the best mind of them all and he duly tries to emulate his approach. He says that he will probably follow the World No.1’s lead in taking aim on an American university by way of a stepping- stone to playing golf for a living. This year, there is a new rule concerning the make-up of the finalists for Abu Dhabi. The field will continue to comprise 12 boys and nine girls, only as from now one of the two wild-cards awarded to the Boys will be handed to a UAE local. Stiggy Hodgson, who won the Daily Telegraph junior title in 2007 and 2008, has called for boys and girls up and down the country to make sure they try to qualify for this year’s championship while they still have the chance. “Whoever is lucky enough to make it through to this year’s finals is in for a great time,” he promises. “In the evenings, the atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed but, by day, everyone wants to beat each other’s brains out – and that’s the way it should be.” Speaking on behalf of the ADTA, Ahmed Hussein, the Deputy Director General of the Authority, said that the tournament will bring “numerous benefits to the emirate, not just as a tourism destination of distinction but in terms of building on our sporting credentials. The championship is another step forward in our campaign to establish ourselves as a destination for major international events and as a premier sporting hub.” The Deputy General went on to say that hosting so prestigious an event also provided the perfect platform from which to promote sporting excellence amongst the region’s youth.
