She received a Diploma in Nursing from the Richmond Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1986, and in 2000, a Bachelors of Science in Health Arts degree from the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois. Her background is as a Certified Pediatric Nurse with specialization in Pediatric Oncology and Pediatric Neurosurgery. She also has OB/GYN and newborn nursery experience. Mrs. Susan Cypher, RN, BSN Mrs. Cypher received a Bachelors of Science in Nursing from the University of Nebraska-College of Nursing. She has completed credits in Health Planning and Policy from the University of Illinois- Chicago. Her background is in med/surg, neuro and physical rehabilitation, dialysis, home health, physician office/clinics, and school nursing.

Grades: 11 or 12HS Credits: 3Prerequisites: Intro to Health and Medical Sciences, Algebra, Biology and TEAS (Test for Essential Academic Skills) REQUIRED. Chemistry highly recommended.

Practical Nursing I is the first year of a two-year practical nursing program that is accredited by the Virginia State Board of Nursing. After successful completion of PN I the student will be admitted to PN II. The PN I students will also be eligible to take the Certified Nurse Aide exam after successful completion of PN I and 40 hours of clinical experience.

Class units include geriatric nursing, nursing skills, nutrition, growth and development, nursing fundamentals, administration of medication and anatomy and physiology. There is a required 40 hour clinical experience at a long term care facility.

Rising juniors, seniors and qualified adults who meet admission requirements are eligible to apply to the program. Criteria for admission are satisfactory scores on the Nurse Entrance Test, satisfactory attendance, three references, and satisfactory high school grades or a diploma. A high school GPA of at least 2.5 is recommended. All students must be able to provide their own transportation to all clinical experiences and to Monroe Technology Center daily. Upon initial acceptance the student must undergo or obtain specific immunizations,

medical clearance, and CPR certification. These requirements must be met by the first day of school for final placement. A criminal background check will be done prior to any clinical experience at a hospital. The Virginia State Board of Nursing requires a social security number to take the licensing exam to become a licensed practical nurse.

Practical Nursing II is the second year of a two year practical nursing program that is accredited by the Virginia State Board of Nursing. After successful completion of PN I the student will be admitted to PN II. After successful completion of both years the graduate will be eligible to take the NCLEX-PN licensing exam and upon passing will be able to work as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

The LPN works in all healthcare settings under the direction of a medical doctor or registered nurse. The job outlook for the LPN is strong and in demand. LPNs often continue their education to become a Registered Nurses (RN) or similar health care providers.

Class units include medical and surgical nursing, psychiatric nursing, obstetrical and neonatal nursing, pediatric nursing, advanced nursing skills and professional issues. The students have a rigorous schedule of 16+ hours a week of classroom instruction

and 16 hours a week of clinical experiences. During clinical time students give direct patient care under the supervision of clinical instructors. Clinical experiences are at various healthcare facilities including hospital and doctor’s offices. All students must be able to provide their own transportation to all clinical sites and to Monroe Technology Center daily.
