Rosa 1 Matthew Rosa Gardner 10 Honors English 3 May 2015 The Safety Concern with Teenagers and Driving Zernik, a national correspondent for the The Times, tells us that “crashes are the leading cause for death of teenagers.” Teenagers have been driving vehicles for a long time, but the reality of people dying is starting to set in. Many civilian deaths are due to teen driving. Should teenagers be allowed to drive at such a young age? Or should the age minimum be raised? In California, teenagers are legally allowed to obtain a provisional license at the age of sixteen (DMV.org). With so much new technology in today’s society, more problems are arising. Many of us have seen teenagers either texting on their phones while driving, or talking on their cell phone, but along with these problems comes inexperience. As Be Smart. Be Well, a website that covers health and real world information, puts it, “Inexperience is the leading crash risk, with most teen crashes occurring in the first six months of having a license.” Although teenagers might have somewhere to be without anyone to drive them, lives are more important than leisure activities. The minimum age for teenagers to obtain a license should be raised because money is saved, GDL laws are taking too much time, and lives won’t be put at serious risk.
