Book Reviews

To Kill a Mockingbird By Harper Lee Classic Historical Fiction * * * * Stars (Great!) Scout Finch lives with her brother Jem and their widowed father, Atticus, in the sleepy Alabama town of Maycomb. The town is suffering through the Great Depression, but Atticus is a prominent lawyer and the Finch family is reasonably well-off compared to the rest of society. Atticus, one day, is chosen to defend a black man, Tom Robinson, in a

tough case. And back then, a white man defending a black man was very uncommon – especially in Maycomb, a racist white community. Tom Robinson was accused of raping a white woman. I loved this book. It was an excellent read, and I’m sure many other people will enjoy this book!

Elsewhere By Gabrielle Zevin Fantasy Other * * * * * Stars (Amazing!) Elsewhere is a book about where you go when you die. A 15 year old girl named Liz dies when she gets hit by a taxi. After she is hit she wakes up on a boat (the SS Nile). Liz doesn’t know that she is dead when she first wakes up, but she slowly realizes. The boat stops at only one place and everyone has to get off. The place is called Elsewhere. The rest of

the book is about how Liz handles being dead and how she eventually gets over it. This book was very interesting because it brought on a whole new perspective about the afterlife. I really enjoyed this book.

Book Reviews

The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton Adventure Realistic Fiction * * * * * Stars (Amazing!) This book is amazing! S. E. Hinton wrote this when she was still in her teens and since she was born in 1948, she knew of two rival gangs at her school, namely the Greasers and the Soc’s, and wanted to write a book from the Greasers’ point of view. Because of this, her book has sold more than 14 million copies and is increasing by more than 500,000 books a

year. The Outsiders is a novel following the Greasers and the Soc’s and how different their lives are because of their socio-economic status. This book is told from the point of view of shy, quiet, 14-year-old Greaser, Ponyboy Curtis.

Avalon High By Meg Cabot Fantasy * * * * * Stars (Amazing!) Ellie Harrison just moved to Washington D.C., expecting a somewhat normal life. But nothing is normal when both her parents are professors studying King Arthur. Will, class president and quarterback, is more than he seems. Even Ellie isn’t who she thinks she is. But she’s about to find out.

I liked this because it added an extra twist to the story with King Arthur and his court. It taught me about medieval times while keeping the book interesting and up-to-date.

Book Reviews

True Grit By Charles Portis Historical Fiction Western * * * * * Stars (Amazing!) 14 year old Mattie Ross goes out to avenge her father’s blood. A man known as Tom Chaney shot him dead for 2 gold pieces and a horse. Mattie gathers up a gang consisting of a Texan Ranger La Boufe, and US Marshall Rooster Cogburn. Set in 1900s western time, Mattie sets off on an adventure. I liked this because I liked the way the book was portrayed through

Mattie’s eyes. She had a lot of spirit and “spunk.” I liked the action and dialogue in the story.

Awakened House of Night #8 By P.C. & Kristin Cast Fantasy Supernatural * * * * * Stars (Amazing!) Zoey has been healed, now she must leave the Isle of Skye and return home. Countless and ageless evils, love, death, and shocking secrets await her. Will she save Tulsa, defeat Neferet, and survive whole? Read to find out.

I liked this because it was easy to read (in modern language), had in-depth characters, a good plot, and was a great continuation of the story.

March 14, 2011 By Diamond Prus There goes a bloody heart, hit by a poisonous dart. Venom courses through the veins, and sanity has lost all reins. Plagued by a depressing thought, happiness never to be caught. There goes a bloody heart, hit by your poisonous dart. I will forever miss your touch, this pain is just too much. Can barely stand the sight of you, a knife to the heart when I do. There goes my bloody heart, hit by your poisonous dart. Memories still fresh in mind, a torture like no other kind. I'm sorry it has to be like this, so here's my last goodbye kiss.

Candyland Zombies By Brittany Berger

Juan and Misha were wandering through Candyland in search of Sugar River. They had just passed Gumdrop Mountain when they heard a strange noise. Scared, they dashed toward Candy Cane Forest, only to find their path blocked by a dozen zombies. “Braaaaaaiiiins!” The zombies moaned. Juan and Misha ran back to Gumdrop Mountain. The zombies followed at a slower pace. “Braaaaaiiiins!” Juan and Misha threw gumdrops at them. The zombies paused. “Guuuuuumdroooops!” The zombies groaned and began to eat.
