During the month of September, we are excited to sponsor a brand-new referral program. If you have friends, family, or co-workers who don't know about the amazing services we offer our patrons, tell them about us! Here’s how it works:

You’ve heard of TED, the nonprofit global phenomenon devoted to spreading innovative ideas and sparking dynamic discussions.

A TEDx event is a local version of TED—a community-planned series of conversations on multiple issues, featuring a diverse range of voices.

The Tinley Park Library is pleased to host its first-ever TEDx event at 7 pm Wednesday, October 12. Light refreshments will be served. Registration opens September 20 and is limited to 100.

Celebrating Shakespeare2016 marks 400 years since the death of playwright William Shakespeare. The Bard’s legacy is still strongly felt around the world, with his influence upon the English language andpopular culture showing no signs of waning.

Join us for three exciting programs presented by independent teacher and lecturer John Nygro: 'Richard III' on Monday, September 19 at 7 pm, 'Shakespeare’s Women' on Monday, October 24 at 11 am, and 'Shakespeare: The Winter’s Tale' on Monday, November 21 at 7 pm. Register for each program separately.

Periodically SpeakingLike to read magazines? Every year, we add new titles to our collections upstairs and down. New to the junior magazine collection are Disney Frozen and Marvel Super Heroes, both bimonthly. Adult titles include Bark (about—guess what?—dogs), Dr. Oz: The Good Life, Military History, and Mindful. For those who prefer digital magazines, the library subscribes to Zinio. Unlike library ebooks, Zinio issues may be downloaded and kept forever—or until you choose to delete them from your device. Shredding EventSaturday, September 24 from 9-11 amThe Friends of theTinley Park Library will sponsor a shredding event in the West parking lot of the 80th Avenue Metra Station. The West parking lot is located north of the train tracks at 179th Street & 80th Avenue. A maximum of two standard-sized paper boxes filled with your sensitive papers (bank statements, bills) is allowed. Approximate dimensions: 16" x 8" x 12". Shredding representatives will remove the boxes from your car, take them to the shredding truck, and shred them onsite. Thank you to the 500+ who attended our April shredding event.

Gift Packages on Sale Saturday, November 5 from 9 am-4 pmLooking for stress-free holiday shopping?

Look no further. The Friends' gift packages are the solution -- all wrapped up and ready to give. A variety of themes and age ranges will be available, from golf to cooking and from child to adult. There's something for everyone! The sale will be held in the Main Level Meeting Room of the library.

Together We Cope TWC in Tinley Park is collecting toys and gift cards for youngsters aged infant to 18 for the nonprofit agency's annual Adopt-a-Child Christmas program, which this year will provide holiday gifts for1500area children in need.

The 2016/2017 Sunday Afternoon Concert Series

Maureen ChristineEnsembleSunday, September 18 at 2 pmOnline registration begins Thursday, September 8. Please register by phone or in person beginning Friday, September 9. Each person attending the concert must register individually. Award-winning vocalist Maureen Christine makes her Sunday Concert debut with piano and woodwind accompaniment.

Eddie Korosa, Jr.and His Boys from IllinoisSunday, October 30 at 2 pmOnline registration begins Thursday, October 20. Please register by phone or in person beginning Friday, October 21. Each person attending the concert must register individually. Come celebrate Oktoberfest with Eddie and his boys. It's always a fun time!

The Sunday Afternoon Concert Series is sponsored by the Friends of the Tinley Park Public Library. Doors open at 1:30 pm for the performance. Registrants must obtain a ticket from the registration table no later than 10 minutes before the scheduled performance.

Unclaimed reservations will be released at 1:50 pm.

If you have registered for a concert and are unable to attend, please call the library at 708.532.0160, x 3 to cancel your reservation.

Friends Visit Drury LaneWednesday, November 16Don't miss this romantic Gershwin musical comedy. Crazy for You brings new life to memorable tunes like "I Can't Be Bothered Now," "I Got Rhythm," and "Nice Work If You Can Get It." Crazy for You is a vivacious show filled with mistaken identity, plot twists, and fabulous dance numbers that are perfect for the whole family! Winner of three Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Tickets are $62 each, which includes bus fare, lunch at the Theatre, and the performance. Menu information and tickets will be available at the Checkout Desk on Thursday, September 8 at 9 am. Deadline for ticket purchase is 4:30 pm Sunday, October 16. The bus will leave the library parking lot at 10:30 am sharp and will return at approximately 5 pm. Tickets are nonrefundable. Cash or check only, please.

Motoring West with Frank Lloyd Wright Wednesday, September 14 at 7 pm

In late 1934, an entourage of architecture students and their teacher, Frank Lloyd Wright, escaped an especially harsh Wisconsin winter by taking a trip to Arizona. Historian Dave Clark examines Wright’s annual pilgrimage across our country’s highways, including Route 66, and shows us the iconic structures he built along the way.

Richard IIIMonday, September 19 at 7 pm

The recent discovery of the remains of the historical King Richard III has sparked a re-evaluation of his true character. Independent teacher and lecturer John Nygro compares factual information about Richard’s physical body and contemporary accounts of his personality with Shakespeare’s portrayal of him as a malformed, evil manipulator.

Bring your pillow and yoga mat or blanket to lie on the floor and enjoy this wonderful guided meditation designed to help you let go of stress. Relax, refresh, and renew during this time set aside just for you. Cell phones must be turned off before entering the Meeting Room. Doors open at 6:30 pm. The meditation begins promptly at 7 pm. No admittance once the meditation has begun.

Stitch ClubFirst and third Thursdays of the month from 11 am–1 pmSeptember 1 and 15, October 6 and 20, November 3 and 17. No registration required.

Open to anyone who wants to meet, mingle, and share tips on needlecraft projects. Bring your own supplies.

Whether you are an experienced player or newbie, now is your chance to play mah jongg at the library. Similar to rummy, this popular game of luck and skill originated in China. An instructor is available to teach those new to the game.

One group meets at 1:30 pm on the second Wednesday of the month and the other at 7:30 pm on the fourth Tuesday. The novel manages to combine the poignancy of a coming-of-age story with the rawer elements of hardcore urban fiction.
