techUK Data Centres Council Members Introduction techUK’s Data Centre Council comprises up to twenty individual members who represent the full spectrum of business interests and business models across the data centre sector. Members include wholesale and retail colocation providers, cloud and hosting operators and enterprise providers and range from multinationals to SMEs. Some members specialise in the provision of professional services to data centres such as lawyers, surveyors, investors and advisors, some manufacture the IT and communications hardware that occupy these facilities and others represent the data centre supply chain. The Council is supported by a Technical Committee chaired by Professor Ian Bitterlin. The Council is a decision-making body providing strategic direction for all techUK’s activity relating to data centres. Formal Terms of Reference provide governance for the group. The Council was established in 2009 in conjunction with the British Computer Society (BCS). Its primary objective was to provide a representative voice for the sector in policy matters, particularly those relating to energy and carbon taxation. Over the last five years the Council has been responsible for delivering a number of significant outcomes for the UK data centre sector. techUK Data Centres Council Members

Introduction techUK’s Data Centre Council comprises up to twenty individual members who represent the full spectrum of

business interests and business models across the data centre sector. Members include wholesale and retail

colocation providers, cloud and hosting operators and enterprise providers and range from multinationals to SMEs.

Some members specialise in the provision of professional services to data centres such as lawyers, surveyors,

investors and advisors, some manufacture the IT and communications hardware that occupy these facilities and

others represent the data centre supply chain. The Council is supported by a Technical Committee chaired by

Member Biographies

Andrew Jay (Chairman), Executive Director EMEA Data Centres, CBRE

Andrew is an Executive Director within the Global Corporate Services division based in London. He is head of the EMEA Data Centres team which is the World’s largest data centre real estate advisory group.

He is recognised as one of Europe’s leading advisors to the data centre industry and benefits from in-depth knowledge of all aspects of the technical real estate market including development, leasing and corporate data centre dynamics.

Andrew is responsible for the unique research provided by CBRE into the Global Colocation market and is a regular speaker at the main conferences including Data Centre Dynamics and Data Centres Europe.

Andrew is a founder member of techUK’s Data Centre Council and was a driving force in negotiating the climate change agreement (CCA) for data centres.

Rob Coupland (Vice Chairman), Managing Director EMEA, Digital Realty

Rob is Managing Director, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), responsible for Digital Realty's operations in the region. He joined Digital Realty in conjunction with the company's acquisition of eight European data centres in 2016 and is based in London. Rob most recently served as Chief Executive Officer of the former TelecityGroup data centre business, which Digital Realty acquired on July 5, 2016. Previously he was UK MD of TelecityGroup with responsibility for developing the company reputation and presence in the UK market. He has over twenty years' experience in the telecommunications and technology sector.

Prior to joining TelecityGroup in early 2007, Rob was Head of Product Marketing at NTL Business where he was responsible for the entire business services portfolio.

Before joining NTL Rob spent 12 years at Cable & Wireless in senior product management roles with a particular focus on business networks, hosting and convergence markets.

Rob is a founder member of the Data Centre Council and his contribution to the successful negotiation of a climate change agreement for data centres was critical.

Emma Fryer (Manager), Associate Director, techUK

Emma has worked in and around the technology industry for the last 15 years in a range of roles including research and report writing, project management and policy negotiation. She leads the data centre progamme for techUK and manages the UK Council of Data Centre Operators, techUK’s Data Centres Technical and Professionalism Committees. Her achievements include negotiating and implementing the Climate Change Agreement for Data Centres, worth over £200M to the sector. In recognition she won the DataCenterDynamics Award for “Outstanding Contribution to the Industry” in 2013 and the “Effective Voice” category of the Association Network Awards in 2014.

Emma has also produced a significant body of work including formal and informal policy responses, white papers, overviews, briefings, high level thought leadership papers and illustrated infographics explaining complex technologies in laymans' terms - plus everything in between. Recent publications include “Cones of Pain: Generator Emissions Compliance Roadmap” and “Silver Linings: The Implications of Brexit for the UK Data Centre Sector”. Emma is a judge for both the leading industry awards providers: BroadGroup and DataCenterDynamics. She is a regular speaker at industry events.

Derek Allen, Group Director Operations, Global Switch

Derek joined Global Switch as Group Director Operations in 2012. He holds a Bachelor in Engineering degree and a post graduate Diploma in Management Studies. Derek has extensive knowledge of operating large scale data centres, having over 30 years’ industry experience, the last 12 of which have been working directly in the data centre industry for companies such as Cable & Wireless Worldwide and UBS, where inter alia he led the standardisation and introduction of best practice operating processes and was responsible for a number of significant data centre build projects. Prior to these roles Derek worked for BT where he built up comprehensive engineering and facilities expertise. At Global Switch, Derek is responsible for the management of the Operations team and ensuring that the company maintains its best in class operating procedures across its global footprint.

Tony Allen, Director Customer Operations, Equinix UK Ltd

Tony has worked for Equinix since the year 2000 and is accountable for Customer operations at 5 UK data centres.

Tony has significant knowledge and experience of data centre management spanning 30 years and has been instrumental in growing Equinix’ UK footprint to 5 data centres with the 6th on target for 2015. Tony has also actively participated in new business growth across EMEA.

Equinix are the world’s largest IBX data centre and colocation provider across 32 strategic markets including the Americas, EMEA and Asia Pacific; connecting more

than 4,500 companies directly to their customers and partners inside the world’s most networked data centres. Equinix support the council in its mission to foster growth in this sector. Equinix actively participate in the development of industry standards and related issues, including best practice data centre design operation and management and driving innovation.

Billy McHallum (Alternate)

Mark Bailey, Partner, Charles Russell Speechlys

Mark is a highly experienced commercial, IP and technology lawyer, who provides advice on a variety of technology, infrastructure and commercial contract matters for clients ranging from growing businesses to public authorities, consultants and major suppliers and buyers of IT services.

Mark combines in-depth commercial expertise, specialist technology know-how and a highly practical approach to advising clients on a range of matters including software licensing, internet and e-commerce issues, terms and conditions of business, IP protection, research and development and collaboration agreements, software developments and licensing. He also advises on supply chain contracting, agency distribution and supply agreements, data centre operation, outsourcing and facilities management and green IT and low carbon issues.

Mark works across a number of sectors but has particular expertise in advising within the financial services arena. Mark was a key contributor to the successful negotiation of a CCA for data centres.

Jack Bedell-Pearce, 4D-DC

Jack started his career with management consultancy firm Accenture where he worked on technical projects, then spent a couple of years at a London-based design agency as their Head of Digital before establishing his own small consultancy company. He joined 4D, one of a handful of small to medium sized privately owned UK data centres, in 2007. Since then, Jack has overseen the rapid growth of 4D, winning, along the way, multiple green awards for retrofitting their data centre with cutting edge cooling technology and winning a Deloitte Fast 500 award 4 years in a row. Taking on a legacy data centre and growing it organically from an almost zero customer base to a nearly full data centre has provided Jack with some unique insights, including: commercial experience in running and managing a Tier 3 data centre, hands on experience in retro-fitting / upgrading a legacy colocation data centre (in a live environment), with the latest UPS and cooling technologies including successful retrofit of adiabatic cooling, a strong understanding of the issues that smaller retails colocation providers face and a commitment to providing a voice for this cohort of operators. Mike Bennett, VP Data Centre Operations EMEA, Cyxtera. Mike Bennett is Cyxtera’s VP for Data Centre Operations EMEA, a role he has held since late 2015. In his role Mike is responsible for the running and operation of Cyxtera’s 6 EMEA Data Centres. Prior to this Mike was VP of Data Centre Expansion and Acquisition at CenturyLink and has also held the posts of VP Operations for EMEA, Head of European Technical Operations and Hosting Engineering Manager for Savvis UK, which was acquired by CenturyLink in 2011. Mike's career prior to joining Cyxtera has involved building expertise in a variety of roles for Intel Corporation, and

for Cable and Wireless in their Internet and Data Communications Divisions. Cyxtera brings together a global data centre footprint and a modern, hybrid- and cloud-ready security portfolio. The result is a powerful, resilient platform capable of securing and supporting dedicated infrastructure, private and public clouds and with software and services that extend protection to on-premises environments and public clouds. Robin Brown, Head of TMT M&A, BDO

Robin is currently Head of Technology Media and Telecommunicatons at BDO Corporate Finance advising business owners and private equity on corporate strategy, value creation, M&A and financing. Previously Vice President DCS Portfolio at Colt Technology Services Robin has over 17 years direct experience in the TMT sector having started his career in South East Asia working as a TMT stock analyst at Credit Lyonnais then with PWC management consulting in Hong Kong before moving to the UK and working in industry for global network operators. Robin has successfully fulfilled a number of Director level roles responsible for driving sales growth, product strategy and asset integration for Data Centre Operators, MNOs, Carriers and Enterprise organisations. Additionally Robin has represented a US West coast M&A advisory firm in a number of executive positions including business restructuring, audit and due diligence, SaaS platform development & deployment.

Graeme Brownlie, Principal Category Manager, Procurement, Vodafone

Graeme is a UK Chartered Engineer with 15 years experience in telecoms and critical infrastructure properties with deep expertise in power markets, energy economics and procurement of forward contracts. Previously with a consultancy background, and presently operating for a multinational he has expertise of power markets across Europe focusing on energy cost risk, trading and how energy intensive business can design, develop and implement strategy to minimise business risk whilst remaining a competitive cost base. This looks at overall impact of costs arriving from both commodity, commercial and regulatory costs stemming from market reform as we continue our journey to a low carbon economy. He has strong knowledge of UK energy policy topics targeting the energy intensive sectors including CHP and Climate Change Agreements.

Paul Cranfield, Director of Power, Digital Realty (Alternate for Rob Coupland)

Paul is a chartered engineer with over 25 years’ experience of critical environments having worked in the transport, telecommunications, finance and technology sectors. With a specialism in energy and environmental management Paul is now the Director of Power for the Global Data Centre Operator, Digital Realty across the EMEA region. Responsible for power procurement, energy demand management, customer cost recovery, carbon reporting and innovation in power generation and utilization. Working with design teams to develop new data centre facilities with market leading efficiencies whilst ensuring competitive energy rates for the end user, incorporating an ever increasing demand for sustainable, renewable power. Managing the firm’s exposure to regulation and mandatory reporting of carbon emissions and environmental impact, including EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), Climate Change Agreement (CCA), Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) and ISO50001. Working as part of the Innovations function, Paul is also responsible for the application of new technologies relating to power generation, transmission, distribution and storage. Paul joined Digital Realty in October 2014 having previously worked for UBS, Vodafone, PB Power and BAA.

Andrew Fray, MD, Interxion UK

Andrew joined Interxion UK as Managing Director in December 2015, having worked in telecoms and ICT for most of his working life, including management roles in BT, Swiftcall, KDDI and Telehouse. In a career spanning 30 years, he has consistently worked with technological innovation and, with Interxion in London, he leads the company’s focus on connectivity, colocated hybrid cloud and with special focus on the financial services and digital media sectors. Educated at Bristol Grammar School and Oxford University where he studied Geography, Andrew later completed an MBA at Westminster University in 1989 and a Masters in Applied Psychosynthesis from Middlesex University in 2005. Before joining Interxion, Andrew was Business Development Director at Telehouse Europe, where, as a Main Board Director, he held responsibility for strategy, compliance, HR and legal matters and led Telehouse’s geographical expansion into emerging markets. He is a regular blogger on the importance of data centres to the economy in general and London specifically and contributes articles to the trade and national press.

Peter Gibson, Regulatory Manager, Intel Corporation

Peter has worked at Intel Corporation for 9 years as part of their Global Public Policy team. Peter has specialist advocacy responsibilities for energy efficiency and spectrum policy in his time with Intel. Peter was responsible for driving the development and subsequent publication of the IEC 62623 test Standard for PC energy consumption. He’s an active member of the Digital Europe eco-design cluster, IEC TC 100, CENELEC TC100X and ITU-T SG5. He continues to drive Intel’s ICT enabling policy in supporting the global reduction of GHG emissions.

Prior to working with Intel he worked with an American manufacturer who designed and developed fixed microwave radio systems in the 1.4 -38 GHz range. He was responsible for developing ETSI Harmonised Standards to support their industry leading innovative solutions. Peter previously worked for 6 years at the UK spectrum regulator, the Radiocommunications Agency (known now as OFCOM) as manager of the fixed services frequency assignment operations.

Gary Kilmister

Gary is a member of the Senior Management team at Pulsant and is Head of Data Centres (Southern Region) where eight of Pulsant’s 15 UK sites are based. Gary’s responsibilities include managing these facilities with his team of facilities managers and support staff. Prior to Pulsant, Gary worked for Tata Communications where he aligned services and delivered best practice across multiple facilities. Prior to that he helped develop a data centre business in Manchester up to its acquisition by a third party. Gary contributes actively to industry level policy dialogues with government, including those on the CCA, Heat Networks and EU ETS. He is also a member of the Green Grid and Chartered Institute of IT.

Matt Lovell, CTO Pulsant (Alternate)

Matt graduated with an honours degree in Industrial Management and holds a number of other post graduate qualifications. He joined Astra Zeneca in 1994 and chose to develop his career in IT, working in several global consultancy roles within Microsoft and Perot Systems before joining Severn Trent Plc as CTO in 2000. Matt joined Digica in 2003 as CTO to accelerate the development of Mid-Market Managed Services; following the Computacenter acquisition in 2007, he became CTO. In 2011, he joined the Board at Pulsant as CTO.

Dave Smith, BEng (Hons) MBA CEng MIET MBCS CITP Dave is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered IT professional and has spent the last seventeen years in international data centre operations management. Dave has an Engineering Degree from Kingston University London and an MBA from Manchester Business School. He joined DataCentred in 2014. Energy management is a key part of his role at DataCentred, alongside quality management, site development and expansion, and recruitment. Previously he was at TeleCity, joining in 1998 as Operations Manager. Among other tasks he oversaw the roll-out of data centres across Europe for TeleCity, managed the technical due diligence and integration of multiple acquisitions, and successfully implemented group wide integrated management systems incorporating ISOs 90001, 27001, 14001 and OHSAS 18001. In addition he implemented the group energy management system which was successful in achieving ISO 50001 across key European markets. In 2011 Dave took on the role of Energy & Sustainability Manager for the TeleCity Group. Dave also sits on techUK’s Data Centres Technical Committee which provides pre-consultation advice to government and other stakeholders. Dave was also part of the team who negotiated with Central Government on behalf of the industry over the introduction of the Climate Change Agreement for UK Data centres.

Mark Trevor, Senior Director, Cushman and Wakefield LLP

Mark leads Cushman & Wakefield’s EMEA Data Centre Advisory Practice which provides data centre specific real estate, M&E & strategic consulting services across all elements of the data centre industry. Mark has worked in the data centre sector exclusively for over 15 years and thus have an in-depth understanding of the colocation & outsourcing markets and the operators & vendors within it. Cushman and Wakefield’s Data Centre Advisory Practise operates on a global basis with data centre professional located in the core regions of the Americas, EMEA and APAC. The EMEA team of seven practitioners is located in London with a collective expertise in the sector of over 60 years. Cushman & Wakefield is a global leader in commercial real estate services providing occupiers, tenants and investors around the world with a full spectrum of property solutions. The company’s core capabilities include agency leasing, tenant representation, global occupier services, asset services (property management), facility services, capital markets, investment and asset management, valuation and advisory, and project and development management. Cushman & Wakefield manages 4 billion square feet globally on behalf of institutional, corporate and private clients. Headquartered in Chicago, Cushman & Wakefield has more than 43,000 professionals operating across more than 60 countries and has revenues of more than US$5bn.

Ross Woodham, Director Legal Affairs and Privacy Officer, Cogeco Peer 1

Ross has worked for Cogeco Peer 1 since 2012 and acts as head of legal for the EMEA region as well as sits on the EMEA board of Directors. He has particular responsibility for Privacy issues globally.

Cogeco Peer 1 is an internet hosting company with its headquarters in Toronto, Canada. It is a subsidiary of Cogeco Communications Inc (traded on the Toronto

Stock Exchange). It has data centres in Canada, the US and the UK and provide colocation, network/connectivity services and managed hybrid IT services. Its flagship EMEA data center is located in Portsmouth, with offices in Southampton and London employing 130+ staff.

Ross has recently taken an in-depth look at the impact of GDPR on the European marketplace. He works closely with Cogeco Peer 1’s Compliance and InfoSec teams on a global scale. Ross has spoken at conferences, given media interviews and published articles on relevant topics within this field.
