“The challenge is not to bring technology into the classroom. The millennials, with their Facebook and their cell phones, have done that. The challenge is to capture the power of technology to improve learning for all.”
David Wiley, Brigham Young University

Going Mobile
Technology Week 2010
Mobile is another Revolutionary Change We need to stay ahead of the curve so that when
business units are ready we can leverage the technology to do university business
Our job is to put infrastructure in place for the business units to useo PAWS — we were able to respond effectively to the university’s online
business requirements (pay stubs, tax slips, student statements …) because the infrastructure was in place for online service delivery
Technology Week 2010
Mobile is the next profound change
Mobile devices are becoming ubiquitous
Mobile service is differento Mobile is “on demand”o Time is of the essence for mobile
usersSaskatchewan’s Lieutenant-Governor
delivers the 2010 Throne Speech from his iPad
Technology Week 2010
Why we need a mobile strategy Our students and faculty are already using these
devices for service from vendors Other universities (MIT, Harvard, Berkeley, etc.) are
embracing mobility o It’s becoming expected by students and faculty
We need a common service frameworko Provide infrastructure so units don’t have to figure
it out on their own
Technology Week 2010
Our Next Steps Develop framework for mobile service delivery:o Strategy, architecture, governance More research: o Demand, platforms, services, etc. Moving forward:o Third Integrated Plan 2012-1016

Technology Week 2010
Importance: Technology is a strategic enabler – as important to the modern university as the buildings.
Innovation: University environments demand innovation; being on the leading edge is critical to education and research.
Investment: Continued investment in technology is necessary in order for us to be competitive.
Collaboration: We must all work together, with both internal and external partners.
