Technology to Enable Authentic Performance Assessments “To be on track for college and careers, students need to show that they can analyze and solve complex problems, communicate clearly, synthesize informaon, apply knowledge, and generalize learning appropriately to other sengs. To evaluate these and other higher-order skills, assessments must elicit complex student demonstraons and applicaons of knowledge – “bubble tests” alone, no maer how well-designed, are not adequate to the task.” - Joanne Weiss, Director, Race to the Top Program, 2010 How are you assessing students’ higher-order skills and growth over time? Are you providing students with meaningful ways to demonstrate what they know and are able to do? Do you have the tools you need to collect and use evidence of student performance on complex tasks? Scalable Portfolio-Based Performance Assessments Educators have long seen the value of having students develop porolios of their work as tools for both learning and assessment. Combined with authenc performance tasks, porolios help students to: Apply their knowledge and skills to new areas Reflect upon their learning in order to hone their skills over me Demonstrate their abilies to effecvely communicate, solve problems, and develop new ways of thinking and doing In the past, however, a lack of transparency and an inability to produce meaningful data with paper-based porolios have prohibited wide-scale adopons of this more authenc assessment method. With the Learning Achievement Tools (LAT) by TaskStream, it is possible to implement large-scale porolio assessments that make learning meaningful for students, while also producing real-me data to drive instruconal decisions, monitor student achievement, and showcase progress to the community. Technology to Enable Authentic Performance Assessments

“To be on track for college and careers, students need to show that they can analyze and solve complex problems, communicate clearly, synthesize information, apply knowledge, and generalize learning appropriately to other settings. To evaluate these and other higher-order skills, assessments must elicit complex student demonstrations and applications of knowledge – “bubble tests” alone, no matter how well-designed, are not adequate to the task.”

- Joanne Weiss, Director, Race to the Top Program, 2010

How are you assessing students’ higher-order skills and growth over time?

Are you providing students with meaningful ways to demonstrate what they know and are able to do?

Do you have the tools you need to collect and use evidence of student performance on complex tasks?

Scalable Portfolio-Based Performance AssessmentsEducators have long seen the value of having students develop portfolios of their work as tools for both learning and assessment.

Combined with authentic performance tasks, portfolios help students to:

Apply their knowledge and skills to new areas•

Reflect upon their learning in order to hone their skills over • time

Demonstrate their abilities to effectively communicate, solve • problems, and develop new ways of thinking and doing

In the past, however, a lack of transparency and an inability to produce meaningful data with paper-based portfolios have prohibited wide-scale adoptions of this more authentic assessment method.

With the Learning Achievement Tools (LAT) by TaskStream, it is possible to implement large-scale portfolio assessments that make learning meaningful for students, while also producing real-time data to drive instructional decisions, monitor student achievement, and showcase progress to the community.

e-Portfolio and Performance Assessment Technology for the Next Generation

Assess Skills & Abilities Based on Student Work ProductsTaskStream’s e-portfolio assessment system enables you to define specific artifacts and evidence to collect from students. Whether you are using research projects, reflections, papers, presentations, reports, multi-media projects, or other performance tasks, you are able to assess students based on actual work products and demonstrations of complex skills and abilities.

In addition to providing a central, organized repository of student artifacts, LAT by TaskStream allows you to define evaluation methods aligned with state standards (including the Common Core) from an integrated standards database. This structure facilitates performance assessments across states or districts.

Engage Students in Demonstrating Learning Student creativity and voice are encouraged with the flexibility to submit work as text, images, videos, and files of all types. The Web-based system makes it easy for students to direct their own learning from school or home and enables them to share the nature of their learning experiences with classmates, teachers, and parents within a secure environment.

WritingThese are two essays I wrote for my Literature in Film class about Mary Shelly's novel Frankenstein. The first essay analyzes the fundamental differences between the novel and 1994 film versions of Frankenstein. In the second essay, I analyze Mary Shelly's condemna-tion of society in Frankenstein, as represented by the alienation and miscomprehension of the Franken-stein's creature. In bothessays, I illustrate my points to the reader through concrete introduc-tions, ideas, and conclusions.
