Learning Objectives
• Increase knowledge of strategies for positive problem solving, collaboration, and open communication throughout a student’s education and beyond
• Increase awareness of how to share resources and knowledge as teams evolve across various placements
• Increase knowledge of the use of confidential team websites to facilitate transitions across a student’s lifespan
What Is a Team Site?
• A secure, password protected website/wiki site
• Owned by the parent(s)/guardian(s)
• Contains videos, recordings, pictures, conversations, resources uploaded by invited team members
Why Set Up a Team Site?
• Designed to increase team communication about a student’s educational program
• Build an electronic portfolio that can assist in transitions, document student progress
• Increase interactivity between team members, including itinerant members of the team
• Increase family involvement
• Increase access to/involvement of outside service providers
Why Set Up a Team Site for Early On?
• Collaboration among team members, especially itinerants not scheduled at the same time
• Takes the pressure off of the parent/guardian to make sure all team members stay informed
• Facilitate scheduling of team meetings
• Serve as a forum for team meetings and discussions
• Sets the stage for a comprehensive child/student portfolio
• Assists in smooth transition to school
Why Set Up a Team Site for Someone in School?• Facilitates communication between home and school
• Builds strong student portfolio
• Facilitates transition between buildings and programs
• Makes staff turnover easier manage
• Promotes consistency
Why Set Up a Team Site for Someone Transitioning from School?• Student portfolio can serve as a video and picture resume
• Portfolio is owned by the parent(s)/guardian(s), so the information is not “lost” when school program is complete
• Adult service agencies can be invited to participate to facilitate transition planning
• Ideally, the first day after leaving school runs much like the last day of school- consistency
• Takes the pressure off of the family in informing adult service providers- promotes self determination
HIPAA and FERPA
• In most cases, the HIPAA Privacy Rule does not apply to an elementary or secondary school because the school either:
(1) is not a HIPAA covered entity or
(2) is a HIPAA covered entity but maintains health information only on students in records that are by definition “education records” under FERPA and, therefore, is not subject to the HIPAA Privacy Rule.
Security Safeguards
• Invitations restrict who has access to the site is the first line of defense
• Monitoring the site content is the second line of defense
What to Put on the Team Site?
• Person-Centered Plan
• Team meeting schedule and changes in schedule
• Mini video clips that document student accomplishments
• Mini video clips used to get team feedback for improving activities
• Instructional video clips to promote consistency
• Resources
• Blog posts to disseminate information and highlight accomplishments
What NOT to Put on a Team Site
• Medical records
• IFSP’s and IEP’s
• Financial information
• Personal information, such as social security numbers
Getting Started
• For starters, find the website: google: https://www.google.com/
• Click the Blue SIGN IN button in the upper right hand corner of the screen
SIGN UP by clicking on the blue “Create an Account” link (under gray box), or SIGN IN using the blue sign in button
To SIGN UP for Google
• Click the Blue “Create an Account” link:
• Enter an email address (or create a new one)
• Create a password
• Now You’re in!
• Note: Use the same log in email each time to keep Wiki’s in same location (if you don’t, you will have to remember your email and log in for each one)
How to Log in
• Go to https://sites.google.com/
• When you log in to Google sites, you will have a list of sites that you have access to on one page, IF, you use the same email address to get into them all.
• When you first log in, it will bring you to the last site you visited (if you are on multiple Wiki sites). Use the arrow on the far left of the page to go back.
• This will bring you to a screen that looks similar to this:

That’s it!
• The list under “Navigation” functions like a website. Click the tab “Documents and Forms” to find all Forms, print them, and get started on your own Wiki site.
• Who’s involved? Gives you a list of names and contact info to keep in touch with people involved in your Wiki.
• The family signs a consent which will be posted as a PDF on the site.• The Wiki will be created by DB Central. • The site is secure…it is as safe as online banking.• Only the individuals listed on the Team Contact Form will be able to
access/share info on the team Wiki site.
