2 www.possum.co.uk
Epilepsy is complex, varied and widely misunderstood and if not monitored and treated, it can have a devastating impact on the lives of people living with the condition and their families.
Doctors generally classify epilepsy seizures as either focal, if they affect only part of the brain or generalised, if the whole brain is affected and consciousness is lost.
There is a wide range of seizure symptoms that can occur in epilepsy.
FOCAL SEIZURES:
- Simple Focal Seizures, which may alter emotions, or change the way things look, smell, feel, taste or sound and may result in involuntary jerking of a leg or arm.
-Dyscognitive Focal Seizures, which alter awareness and result in purposeless movements.
GENERALIZED SEIZURES: :
- Atonic Seizures cause loss of muscle tone and sudden collapse
- Absence seizures are characterized by a brief loss of awareness and subtle body movement.
- Tonic Seizures cause stiffening of muscles in the back, arms or legs and may cause a fall.
- Clonic Seizures are associated with rhythmic, jerking muscle movements.
- Tonic-Clonic Seizures grand mal seizures are characterized by a loss of consciousness, body stiffening and shaking.
