What does this innovation give to the world?
Do YOU care enough about the problem to spend the next 5-10 years focussed on it?

1. Research - Learn, experiment, validate. This can be done quickly and cheaply, without raising money or spending any cash.
2. Skills – commercial, software, sales, implementation, clinical, negotiation.
3. Business – Learn to be a business-person and get the structure right.
MY TOP 3 TIPS
If the research doesn’t support your innovation the bravest thing to do is to walk away.

IMPLEMENTATION
Implementation is MUCH harder
than development!
IMPLEMENTATION
Patient uptake:
Too babyish (>12yr)
Too difficult (<7ys)
A 10 yr old boy: “I don’t like that it’s a girl”

IMPLEMENTATION
Staff uptake
Technologically unconfident
No time to implement
As soon as it doesn't work
once. It will be put into a
cupboard and not used again.
Ensure it is simple and works
first time every time
IMPLEMENTATION
Institutional hurdles
Getting approval/consent for an app
• Is it scraping patient data (GDPR)?
• What if we need to edit the content?
• Who will support the app (updates)?
• Risk assessments in place?
• Legal ownership issues?
• Research ethics?
• The colour doesn’t follow the hospital branding?

Key Learning
Points
• Connectivity is power
• Physiotherapists make great innovators
• A launch is just the beginning. . .
HOT TIPS
• Implementation *sustainably* is the hardest part
• Win over your biggest doubter
• It’s all about relationships (I realise this is obvious but sometimes you
don’t realise how significant someone could be when you first meet them.
• Ask for forgiveness rather than permission.
• Break the rules (but only enough so you don’t get in real trouble!)
• Get with a program
• Be careful of the black hole that is ethics (ethics and sustainable
implementation do not make good bed fellows)
• If possible, initially do it on the cheap (funding complicates things). It’s
amazing what you can get for free if you ask.
HOT TIPS
• When it comes to governance hurdles this document will be your best
friend
