    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

    The start of organized sector of the Indian machine tool industry took place in early years of the

    Second World War. Due to non-availability of imported machine tools, few British owned

    general engineering firms took up their manufacturing in India. 1950 was considered as an era

    which brought public investments in this industry. These two initial phases of development of

    the Indian machine tool industry saw the production of general purpose machine tools most of

    which were produced under technical assistance from foreign collaborators. The recent decrease

    in imports of machine tools was partly attributed to the growing competitiveness of Indian firms,

    so this issue has greater relevance to a large number of SMEs in the sector, where a large number

    of enterprises are manufacturing tiny and small component. It was visualized that in addition to

    building volumes, the SMEs would also have to upgrade their products and processes in terms oftechnology and quality in order to remain competitive at both local and global markets. Thus, the

    machine tool industry faced the dilemma of whether to remain as finished product supplier and

    face competition from large volume players or become sub -suppliers of components and / or sub

    -systems to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).

    Revolution in The technology over past decade

    Computer numerical control machining(CNC machining), refers to a computer controller that readscode and instructions and drives a machining tool in order to make a product according to specific

    requirements. Imagine a robot that can make several different products based on a specific set of

    instructions given to it. A CNC machine works this way. Its like a robot that can make things exactly

    the way you want. CNC machining is unison between the world of software and the world of

    manufacturing. It brings both disciplines together and produces output as efficiently and effectively as

    possible. It is unlikely that any time or energy will be wasted using this kind of technology.

    UPT started its empire with 3 types of machinery Turners, millings, grindings. They had these tools

    to manufacture equipments like.

    The raw material is in the

    form of round rods of

    different diameters which is

    cut into pieces as per the

    needs. Initially they had the

    manual application of

    cutting of the rods. In 2008

    they introduced the cutting

    machine which helped in

    cutting the metals in shortest

    period of time.

    Turner machine: after the metal is but the

    metal pieces are been put into the turner

    machines to mould and shape the metal as per

    the orders. Initially they had the turner

    machines of single dimension (the machine

    which shapes only one kind of shape) later they

    introduced the newer

    version of the turnerswhich had advanced

    technology of molding

    the metal in different

    size. They use to get orders for manufacturing metals like HSK,

    TG ,Milling Chuck, Straight Shank Series.

    Later on they started getting orders for the products like

    DAT, Drill Chuck, Edge Finder, ER,EOC.

    Milling machines: these are the machines which dig the holes.

    Since the beginning they had this technology of drilling the metal

    In 2009 they introduced another milling machine. They are not using

    the higher version of this

    category because thesemachines cater their needs

    accordingly.

    GrindingMachines: these are the machines which smoothens the metal surface. They have two types of

    grinding machines external grinding machines and internal grinding machines. External grinding

    machines smoothens the outer surface; top surface &

    bottom surface of the metal where as the internal grinding

    machines smoothens the

    inner surface of the

    metal.

    For all of the above machinery they uses typical oil called collect which is a mixture of a chemical and

    water. This helps in smooth cutting of the metal.
