    Program PurposeThe purpose of the Information Technology Specialist Program is to trainstudents for entry-level computer support positions. Students will developskills applicable to small to middle size offices and to self-employment. Studentswill have skills that, with further training, could be used to gain othercertification.

    AAS Degree, Certificate Program, University of Alaska, Fairbanks

    Program SkillsStudents who earn the Information Technology Specialist Degree or Certificate will learn thefollowing skills:

    Applications SkillsStudents will learn to use the essential office applications including wordprocessing, databases, graphics, desktop publishing, and the Internet.Networking SkillsStudents will learn to use, configure, troubleshoot, and install networks in asmall to intermediate office environment.Hardware and Software Configuration and Troubleshooting SkillsStudents will learn to install, troubleshoot, and configure hardware andsoftware. The skill of troubleshooting will include both research and application.Independent Thinking and Research SkillsStudents will learn to research computer problems, provide computersupport, and to learn new computer applications. Students will learn toacquire new skills independently in order to keep their skills current.Human Relations and Support SkillsStudents will learn to help other computer users, develop training andmaintenance plans and to translate their knowledge so that others can use it.Students will also learn to respect and meet the diverse technical support needs of

    computer users.

    Networking Academy Program OverviewThe Cisco Networking Academies program consists of four semesters. The program is

    designed to teach students The skills needed to design, build, and maintain small

    to medium-size networks. This provides them with the opportunity to enter theworkforce and/or further their education and training in the computer networking field.
