Mr. Mendel, Meet My Monster: SlideShare Presentation

Instructional Goal

After completing the Creature Feature Challenge, students will create slide shows that demonstrate a mastery of heredity and SlideShare

Instructional Objectives

Technology Objectives:

Students will:1. Upload slide shows to SlideShare.2. Choose the privacy level of their presentations3. Create and manage groups4. View and comment on their peers’ work.5. Use a screen capture application (i.e., Jing® or Snagit®) to take screenshots of their

creations to use in their presentations.6. Use a photo editing application (i.e., Paint, Paint.net, or GIMP) to edit and resize their

image files.7. Create audio files to supplement their presentations*8. Sync their audio files to the slide show*9. Embed slideshows in class wiki.*

Content Objectives:

Students will:1. Demonstrate a mastery of punnett squares using work from the Creature Feature

Challenge.2. Create a minimum of five slides that correctly define and illustrate the following terms:

homozygote, heterozygote, allele, phenotype, genotype.3. Create a minimum of five slides that explain their creature’s genotype and phenotype,

what steps they went through to create the creature and demonstrate the its heritable traits using a genetic tree and punnett square.

Procedure:

Page 2: Technology Activities_LessonPlans

1. Pass out Mr. Mendel, Meet My Monster handout and rubrics to class. Review assignment, expectations, due dates, and grading rubrics.

2. For homework, ask students / groups to sign up for SlideShare accounts (or set up accounts for them using school login and passwords).

3. Give students time to create slideshow presentations.

4. Review slide creation, capturing screenshots, and photo editing and re-sizing as necessary.

5. Meet with groups to check progress.

6. Demonstrate how to upload presentations to SlideShare.

7. Demonstrate how to set up and manage groups, how to leave a comment and how to moderate comments on SlideShare. Pass out Comment Guide and Checklist handout. Review expectations for student decorum and completion of the assignment.

8. Give students time to review their peers’ work and leave comments.

For students with IEPs:

• Modifications: require fewer slides, provide a template / skeleton presentation and ask students to plug in their work.

• Adaptations: Allow extra development time outside of class; make technology cheat sheets or tutorial videos available; create account on SlideShare for student; schedule one-on-one time to work on technology skills; group students with classmates who can help accomplish the tasks.

For students with ILPs:

• Modifications: require fewer slides, provide a template / skeleton presentation and ask students to plug in their work.

• Adaptations: Provide the assignment’s directions in L1; provide technology cheat sheets or tutorials videos in L1/L2; create account on SlideShare for student, schedule one-on-one time to work on technology skills, group students with classmates who can help accomplish the tasks.

Extension Activities:

• Ask students to create audio files to supplement their presentations.

• Students can sync their audio files to the slide show.

• Students can embed slideshows in a class wiki.

• Students can create an animated video of their creature following the assignment guidelines and post it to TeacherTube.

Page 3: Technology Activities_LessonPlans

• Students can create tutorials for future students about a specific technology skill.
