Glutz access systems provide straightforward solutions to complicated

tasks. Designed for convenient access, the entire solution is built using

components developed and produced in-house: from the fitting, lock and

door hinge to a radio-based programming system and biometric reading

device. And because everything comes from a single source, the components

interact and operate seamlessly.

With today’s increasingly stringent accessibility and fire codes, the

need for universal escape doors has never been more crucial. Traditional

escape doors, which are used in most buildings today, can only be opened

on one side. On the other hand, Glutz panic door features a double leaf

application, which means it can be opened on both sides. This enhances the

escape throughput, allowing more people—and more importantly, people in

wheelchair or who need assistance—to go through the escape doors easily.

The panic bar is durable, tamper resistant, and has a satin stainless steel

finish. With its ergonomic and aesthetic features, the panic bar combines

form and function required by specifiers and end-users.

In addition, the panic devices can be connected to an electronic access

control system, which increases the security of the premises by allowing the

door access to be monitored and controlled during normal usage.

Stone fixing and caring system

Adhesives: Eastern Gotech (HK) Limited

technologies@15

Stone is widely regarded a timeless material for portraying quality, style

and character. While it is often thought to be among the hardest materials

known, some types of stone are brittle, fragile and prone to damage.

Ordinary cementitious stone adhesives have limitations, which is why E.MIX

has been developing a comprehensive range of solutions to stone installation

challenges.

The Stone Back Series is a stone fixing and caring system featuring high

bond strength with its waterproofing polymer modified cementitious adhesive

formulated for fixing mesh on stones. It is also fully compatible with other

cementitious materials, making it ideal for a wide range of applications.

The Stone Fix Series is a fast setting, high strength, water-resistant

polymerised stone adhesive. With the right amount of water, it becomes a

strong, non-slip and highly workable adhesive mortar for a variety of stone

materials such as marble, granite, slate and artificial stones.

The Stone Sealer Series is highly effective for protecting the stone surface

against water and chemicals attacks. It prevents staining and efflorescence

for both interior and exterior applications.

A laminate as large as life

Benchtops, laminates & joinery: Formica Singapore Pte Ltd

technologies@15

Laminates have been used in kitchens, offices and bathrooms for many

years. But just because they’ve been around a while doesn’t mean they’re

still the plain, uninspired materials they used to be. Laminates still retain their

good character traits like low cost, ease of maintenance, and plenty of colour

choices. But today there are new textures, patterns and finishes that more

closely mimic natural materials such as wood and stone.

Real woods or stones don’t repeat

A décor pattern repeat is usually the revealing factor of conventional high-

pressure laminates (HPL), especially when applied on large surface areas.

This is because a regular HPL is approximately 600- to 750-millimetre wide,

which is only able to fit smaller-sized applications like worktops or kitchen

doors. Hence, pattern repeat is obvious in applications such as interior walls.

To solve this, Formica has come up with an innovative printing technology to

achieve large-scale designs that capture every detail, shade and texture of

natural stone in true scale, without pattern repetition.

The result is the Formica 180fx Collection with striking colours, texture

and design details—making it easy for architects, specifiers and designers

to achieve the beauty and realism of stone in commercial and residential

spaces, minus the associated expense and high-maintenance qualities.

Since pattern repeat is avoided, it allows for a seamless look, while also

providing maximum impact resistance and durability.

The 180fx collection replicates the look and true scale of a natural stone

and wood slab. Available in 5 feet x 12 feet size, 17 large-scale patterns are

presented in three different finishes—the subtle stone surface Honed finish,

the smooth and fuss-free NDF finish, and the highly popular Gloss finish.

They are specifically created to replicate some of the most exotic stones and

rare wood species from Italy, Greece, Spain and Brazil.

About the company

Founded in 1913, Formica Group has evolved to become the world’s

preferred manufacturer for decorative surfaces. The company is driven by

new challenges and works closely with architects, designers and specifiers

to design laminates, decors and other products which complement current

design trends. With sustainability a concern for the global community, Formica

makes it a priority to offer a full range of environmentally-friendly surfacing

products. The products have been awarded three important sustainability

certifications: GREENGUARD, Forest Stewardship Council Chain of Custody,

and Carbon Trust’s Carbon Reduction Label.

Longer-lasting tile grouts

Cement – mortar: Mortar Utama

technologies@15

Mosaic in bathroom and kitchen designs is popular nowadays. The

mosaics consist of smaller tiles arranged in a variety of patterns which add

character and flair to the design. As the layout of tiles produces many grout

lines, grouting is an important step in achieving a clean look while protecting

the mosaic from mould.

The MU-408 grout series is available in many textures and colours and

supports almost all tile materials and designs (e.g., ceramic, mosaic, etc.).

To complement sparkly mosaic tiles, the Glitter grout variant is used. This

grout features glittery particles and SmartShield Formula technology, which

not only creates an impressive look but also protect the mosaic from crack

and bacteria. It is highly resistant to moulds, easy to clean, and less prone to

colour fading and cracks.

Meanwhile, the ColorPlus grout variant, available in many colours,

is mainly used for ceramic tiles. Like the Glitter model, it also features

SmartShield Formula technology which ensures grout colours last longer

without abrasion.

Ventilated façades have become one of the building envelopes of choice

today for architects and specifiers. Not only is it flexible, easy to install and

aesthetically pleasing, the installation of ventilated façades can lead to greater

energy efficiency.

Leading the industry in ventilated façade technology, Hunter Douglas’s

flagship Terracotta Façade System was developed more than two decades

ago from technology borrowed from the aerospace industry. Today, the group’s

key focus is on sustainability—achieved through its focus on three themes:

design, functionality and comfort.

Ventilated façade technology

Ventilated façade technology utilises an open-jointed cladding system that

is designed to work with nature. The open joints—which are effectively gaps

between the cladding panels and other integrated façade elements—provide

channels for ventilation as well as allow rainwater and condensation to be

drained off behind the cladding surface.

One of the advantages is that ventilated facades provide reliable heat

protection. Air is drawn in at the floor level and at the open joints, and travels

upwards. The building structure will not be directly heated by the sun; instead

the cavity will be warmed, allowing any excess heat to escape upwards.

The façades also contribute towards enhancing a building’s thermal

performance. Firstly, the ventilated façade panels provide a (small) benefit to

the U-Value of the wall behind due to the fact that they shield the building from

direct wind and sun. Secondly, the large panel format and resulting shielding

effect help to reduce the number of thermal bridges—anything that goes

through the wall’s outer insulation layer—thus maximising the performance of

the insulation.

A true ventilated façade system provides durable weather resistance—

protection from the sun, wind and rain—with moisture either descending by

drainage channels or evaporating through the ventilation cavity. In accordance

with the CWCT standards for open jointed rainscreens, Hunter Douglas’s

ventilated façade systems incorporate a 50mm ventilation cavity behind.

Ventilated façades enhance building energy efficiency

An industry leader

Durable, high quality façades from Hunter Douglas contribute to lowering

lifecycle costs of a building. Furthermore, the extensive applications of

Hunter Douglas NBK Terracotta Façade panels give architects wide-ranging

opportunities for creative freedom in designing building exteriors. It combines

the latest technology for ventilated façades with local traditions and materials

(the manufacture of clay-based construction materials centres on the

three elements of fire, water and clay), opening up new dimensions in the

terracotta façade area by blending traditional craftsmanship with leading edge

manufacturing methods.

Hunter Douglas has been a leader in the industry for more than 40

years, known for its high quality and reliable products as well as its continual

innovations and excellent record of service to customers. The company has

been working alongside the architecture and design community to create some

of the world’s most recognisable buildings. Dedicated to creating innovative

and customisable solutions, the company values design while making sure that

functionality and comfort are not compromised.

Unitised curtain wall system

Curtain walling: Jangho Group

technologies@15

Façades are crucial in determining the amount of insulation and

ventilation of buildings. The primary objective is to minimise a building’s

energy expenditure while improving indoor comfort.

The Unitised 80 (U80) curtain wall system is a modular façade envelope

for high-grade buildings. It features a 80-millimetre-wide mullion and

transom, which is ideal for projects with various performance and thermal

requirements.

Main features

The design is based on a rain screen system to achieve good thermal

performance, air tightness and waterproofing, as well as wind load and

plane deformation. The air permissible line is included in the last gasket of

the transom and mullion. To allow for high thermal performance, an O-type

thermal barrier trip with gasket port is used.

The system has structural sealing between units, which means that there

is no need for on-site filling of sealant. It is also adaptable to displacement

of the main structure, making U80 ideal for high-rise buildings and steel

structures. Moreover, the curtain walls are manufactured in modern,

automated factories that comply with the high requirements of environmental

protection and energy conservation.

A brand new key management solution from ASSA ABLOY, the Traka

key management system - Traka key management system combines

innovative RFID technology and robust design to provide small and medium

sized businesses with the advanced management of keys or keysets in an

affordable plug and play unit. The system can be fully integrated with almost

any access control system used in secure environments such as prisons,

hospitals, and IT data centres. Equipment such as personal attack alarms

or cell keys can be stored in key cabinets or lockers that are linked to the

organisation’s access control system. The system immediately detects the

moment at which an item is removed from or replaced in a key cabinet or

locker, and this can be communicated to the access control system in less

than 40 milliseconds. When users show their ID badge at an entrance or exit,

the system can check to see if an asset has been returned or taken, before

allowing the barrier to open.

At the heart of the system is iFob, a bullet-shaped device containing a chip

which provides a unique electronic ID. Once attached to an iFob, individual

keys or keysets are electronically tagged and can then be controlled via key

cabinets to manage a wide range of assets and facilities.

How does it work?

A user is required to enter his/her unique PIN code or RFID Card to gain

access to the cabinet. All keys and keysets are individually locked by the

Traka unit. Green LEDs indicate those keys to which this user has access.

The user cannot remove keys highlighted by the Red LEDs which continue to

remain locked in place.Amber light indicates return position.

Advanced technology carpet by Milliken

Floorcovering – carpets: PT. Indo Balau Ume

technologies@15

Carpet flooring has traditionally been used in office and commercial

environments for good reason—it adds pattern, texture and colour to a space

while still being functional. For office carpets to last long, it is important to

choose a high-quality product that is durable and stain resistant.

By combining science with design and customer insights, Milliken is able

to offer creative ways to enhance offices and commercial environments with

its safe and sustainable products.

Advanced technologies developed by Milliken Research:

Digital patterning technology

Millitron technology uses computer-controlled micro jets to inject dye

with surgical precision deep into the face of the carpet. Dye application is

accomplished by switching a high-pressure dye stream on and off without

any machine parts touching the face of the fabric. It can achieve intricacy of

up to 400 colour dots per square inch, allowing for a wide variety of colour

combinations and designs.

Adhesive-free, stay-in-place backing system

Backing systems have a major impact in the overall durability and

performance of carpet flooring. TractionBack is a bio-based, non-visible high-

friction coating that prevents lateral movement of carpet tiles while allowing

them to be easily lifted for underfloor access. It not only keeps the carpet

securely in place, it does so without wet adhesives, floor sealers or primers.

The B2 Hardback and Cushion variants are PVC-free and 100-percent

recyclable. They act as a shock absorber to extend the appearance and life

of carpets while reducing leg fatigue for end-users.

Antimicrobial additive

The AlphaSan antimicrobial additive uses silver to protect surfaces

against bacteria and other microbes that cause foul odours, discolouration,

and corrosion. It can be applied to plastics, fibres, foams and coatings.

Soil and stain resistance

StainSmart combines the benefit of repellency with the added feature of

Milliken Asia HQ & Carpet Showroom, Shanghai - China

Lume Hexagon - Silver Award of NeoCOn Hospitality Carpet 2014

stain release to extend the life of commercial carpets. Fabrics and carpets

stay cleaner and more durable, looking better and lasting longer than ever

before. The repellency layer of the technology defends against water- and

oil-based stains. Most stains will bead up and roll off the carpet or can be

gently blotted off with a paper towel. However, if the stain gets ground into

the carpet, it will be released during the wash.

Sustainability Excellence

All of the company’s products are certified Gold/EPP and Platinum/EPP;

are PVC- and chlorine-free; have acquired CRI Green Label Plus Certification

for IAQ; and do not contribute to landfills. Milliken is also a carbon-neutral

company. As one of appointed agents of Milliken Carpet in Indonesia, Indo

Balau Ume, PT. delivers the same goals and performances in top quality

products.

Giving reclaimed wood a second life

Floorcovering – timber: Jason Parquet Specialist (S) Pte Ltd

technologies@15

Reclaimed wood comes from leftovers of furniture/flooring productions or

are simply construction debris. In certain cases, they are salvaged materials

from old buildings undergoing refurbishment or from scrapings of old ships

and yachts. Timber blocks and planks have to be stripped and undergo

re-milling before they can be reused to make reclaimed wood flooring or

furniture. There are pros and cons for reclaimed wood applications:

Pros:

1. Reclaimed wood is sustainable, which means that there is no need to cut

down more trees.

2. It has weathered for decades has an antique appearance that cannot be

easily reproduced.

3. It is extremely stable as it has gone through many cycles of expansion

and contraction throughout the years.

4. Old wood is arguably stronger than new wood, as reclaimed timber

comes from older trees which has denser cellulose structure compared to

trees of the present age.

Cons:

1. Reclaimed wood is scarce and hence large-quantity applications are

technically not viable.

2. It is more expensive to produce economically compared to new wood

due to the need for resorting and preparation prior to production.

3. It may have volatile organic compounds (VOC) within due to previous

treatments done to the wood, such as tantalization and previous

application of melamine coating, etc.

Jason Parquet has started an initiative to give reclaimed wood a second

life. This is done through two schemes:

Re-profiling of used Teak parquet material from the company’s BCA ATTC

• The constructed wooden panels are re-milled and reconstructed into

tabletops for furniture uses

• InordertoqualifyasacoretradecertifiedworkerinSingapore,candidates

go through the company’s parquetry course and test

Re-profiling of recycled Balau timber for use as timber runners and battens

• Offcutsandbalancematerialsfromexternaldeckingworksarecollected

• Timber is profiled and cut into smaller sizes for use as pegging and

runners for external decking works

About the company

Based in Singapore, Jason Parquet Specialist (S) Pte Ltd is a flooring

specialist with an established reputation and track record for quality and

reliability. The company is principally engaged in the supply and installation

of a comprehensive range of timber floorings under its Tech-Wood brand, as

well as the sale and distribution of timber products and flooring accessories.

It is also easier clean and maintain compared to many other flooring types.

Gaia Maru’s 2014/2015 collection of vinyl floorcovering features a broad

range of colours, textures and patterns. Some designs resemble the look of

other flooring types, like stone, marble, ceramic or hardwood. With the huge

selection of vinyl designs, one can create almost any colour scheme and

decor of residential or commercial interior spaces. Moreover, the vinyl rolls

and planks come in various sizes and thickness. Installation service is offered

to clients in order to achieve a smooth, professional look.

Wood composite for façades

Floorcovering – wood plastic composite: Greentins Technology (International) Limited

technologies@15

Wood is a highly popular raw material in construction and interior

design. Its texture, quality and colour give a sense of nature and serenity.

However, there are also problems associated with using natural wood as it

is non-water resistant and susceptible to fire, corrosion, etc. Also, excessive

demand has led to over-logging and forestry issues in some parts of the

world.

Greentins is a revolutionary wood composite derived by combining

recycled wood waste with plastic resins to produce a granular raw material

that is further processed into a wood grain finished product by using

proprietary extrusion. Made up of approximately 70 percent timber and 30

percent plastic resins, this ensures that the natural texture and colour of

wood are maintained while being water resistant at the same time.

Greentins composite wood materials are:

• waterresistant

• fireresistant

• PHresistant

• insectandfungusresistant

• freefromnaturaldefects(e.g.,warps,cracks,splits,etc.)

• resistanttoweatherconditions

• wearandtearresistant

In addition, they have high impact strength and smooth surfaces having

been processed with a special treatment.

Greentins products have been awarded the Hong Kong Green and

Singapore Label as they are:

•recyclable

•reusable

•biodegradable

•non-poisonous

It also does not emit peculiar smells nor contribute to pollution. Greentins

granules can be transformed into various types of decorative products

includingdecking, fencestrips,handrails,ceilingpanels,wallpanels,etc.,

for both interior and exterior applications. The company also owns the

distributorship of EINWOOD, a wood composite from Japan.

18

The company developed its own production method, the Okamura

Production System (OPS), based on the Toyota Production System (TPS). OPS

improvement activities are aimed at enhancing productivity and eliminating the

wasting of resources and energy. As a result, its products feature high recycled

content and recyclability, and are developed, manufactured and distributed in

accordance with its ISO14001-certified environmental management system.

In 2007, Okamura Corporation attained GREENGUARD certification

by UL, an industry independent, non-profit organisation that oversees the

GREENGUARD certification program. Products that are GREENGUARD-

certified must meet stringent, third-party standards for low chemical emissions

based on established health standards and undergo rigorous testing and

verification processes on a regular basis. In addition to the Contessa Task

chair, which was certified in 2003, Okamura added other seating series

including Baron/Okamura CP, to its GREENGUARD-certified product range.

Adaptive glass to Green your building

Glazing & architectural glass: Energeia Glass (SEA) Pte Ltd

technologies@15

Key features

1) It reduces solar radiation and heat gain through reflectance; improves

shading coefficient; blocks ultraviolet light that is damaging to human

health and interior finishes; and improves ambient temperature and

visible lighting.

2) It offers lateral strength and safety glass features, which makes it less

likely to break, or less likely to pose a threat when broken. It is safe for

use on façades, curtain walling, framed windows, doors and balustrades.

3) Privacy is one of the most important factors in the choice of glass.

The MBXIR glass reduces reflection, so at night when the light is on,

building occupants can see the view outside instead of just people

looking in.

4) MBXIR laminated glass is able to achieve STC 45 (Sound Transmission

Class), eliminating the need for double glazing.

5) Its improved light transmittance allows more natural light to go through,

thus reducing illuminating costs, while also stopping heat from getting

through.

Applications, certifications

The MBXIR glass can be installed in both plane and curved surfaces,

which is hardly possible with coated or film-on glass types. It can be used for

structural glazing and skylights, and is particularly suited for large venues with

special safety requirements and energy conservation needs, such as airports,

train stations, sports stadiums, aquariums, and exhibition halls.

It has acquired the following certifications: ISO9001 Quality Management

System; ISO14001 Environmental Management System; patent of utility model

by the Chinese National Patent Office; Chinese 3C Certification; TNO report

from TNO Quality Services B.V., Netherlands; and product test reports from

China Building Material Test & Certification Center, Solar Energy Research

Institute of Singapore (SERIS), and SETSCO Services Pte Ltd, Singapore.

About the company

Energeia Glass is an innovative company that offers energy-efficient glass

More than just a machine

The V5 X series variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system offers a the

widest capacity rage in any VRF system, from 8HP up to 88HP in 2HP

increments through combining up to four outdoor units. It also incorporates

an array of outstanding features, extensive-range of indoor units with different

classifications and capacities, and energy-saving technologies. It supports a

piping length of 1,000 metres and a level difference of 110 metres, making it

suitable for large high-rise buildings.

Flexible and adaptable

A maximum number of 64 indoor units (with capacity of up to 130 percent

of total outdoor units) can be connected in one VRF system. This is especially

useful for office buildings, hotels, condominiums, and hospitals with numerous

types of rooms, each with different types of requirements.

Powerful yet highly efficient

The series achieves high energy efficiency of cooling by utilising its full DC

compressor control system, including DC fan motors. At part load usage, IPLV

(Integrated Part Load Value) can go up to 7.5 W/W, which is the highest in the

market. IPLV is very important especially for businesses who operates 24/7 (i.e.

BPOs) but rarely run their operations at 100% capacity.

Next generation VRF cooling solution

Heating, ventilation & air-conditioning (HVAC): Concepcion-Carrier Air Conditioning Company

technologies@15

Reliable cooling

In a modular scenario, any outdoor unit can run as the master outdoor unit

to equalise the service life of all units. It detects condensing pressure every

10 seconds, and send this information to the processor, adjusting the speed

according to the condensing pressure to keep it in an optimised level.

In a regular VRF system, the PCB is always at a risk of being damaged if

the temperature becomes too high. This may also cause fire to the system. The

PCB box of the V5 X series is protected with an auto-recovery feature, keeping

its temperature within a safe range.

Back-up function

In a multiple system setup, if the master unit fails, any single unit can be

set as the master unit and the other remaining units can keep on working. This

can be set on PCB by DIP switches at site.

Silent mode

The night silent mode feature, which is easily set on the PCB board, allows

the unit to be set to various time options during non-peak and peak operation

time, optimising the units noise output. Extra silent operation mode can reduce

sound level further to 43dB (A).

About the company

Concepcion Carrier Air Conditioning Company (CCAC) is a leader and

pioneer in cooling solutions in the Philippines’ HVAC market with over 50 years

of experience. By partnering with Midea, they combine the manufacturing and

technological scale of Midea together with the local expertise of CCAC, which

makes a truly brilliant joint venture.

Beauty and performance in wood

Interior & decorations: Super Star Co. Ltd.

technologies@15

Kebony is a wood modification technology that gives faster growing wood

species the similar attributes and performance of tropical hardwoods. The

result is an environmentally-friendly and highly durable product with similar

appearance to endangered tropical hardwoods.

Eco-friendly process

Kebony modifies wood by forming stable, locked-in furan polymers in

the wood’s cell walls. The two-step process requires a bio-based liquid (a

byproduct of the sugar industry) to treat and give enhanced hardness and

durability to the wood. First, cellular level impregnation of the organically

derived monomer into the wood occurs. Second, the crosslinking

polymerization of the two materials at the molecular level through a curing

process completes the modification. The results are enhanced appearance,

improved dimensional stability relative to moisture changes; high durability

and resistance to insect and decay; and increased surface hardness.

All the woods used in the process carry the Nordic Ecolabel ‘the Swan’

and are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for

the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

Applications

The wood’s dark colour resembles teak, ipé, mahogany and other

rainforest varieties of wood. If left untreated, it will acquire a silver grey patina

after exposure to elements.

Kebony products can be used in various applications and architectural

designs, such as roof, wall, cladding, deck/dock, public space planking,

outdoor furniture, building exteriors, etc.

About the company

Super Star Co. Ltd. is a provider of innovative building materials to architects

Regenerative, energy efficient, battery-powered elevator

Lifts & escalators: Concepcion Otis Philippines, Inc.

technologies@15

Power outage is a common problem in the Philippines. Hot weather

and typhoons have been known to send power grids crashing in the county

already struggling to keep up with rising electricity demand. With regular

power interruptions, it is not uncommon for people to get stuck in elevators.

In some buildings, the elevators have a backup generator. In most, if the

power goes out, the elevator stops and people get trapped for hours.

This problem has led many building and property managers to find ways

to cope with power outage. One solution to this problem is GeN2 Switch,

an elevator that simple to install, sustainable to operate, and powered by a

battery when the power fails. The system is capable of providing simplified

power infrastructure to support elevators during frequent grid outages.

Energy efficiency

It requires only single-phase power so it can be plugged into a regular

power outlet like any home appliance, unlike other elevators which require

three-phase power. This makes the system particularly advantageous when

retrofitting into an existing building where 3 phase power is not available, or

for removing the requirement to have 3 phase power in a new building just to

supply the elevator.

Furthermore, the system generates electricity during operation and uses

the harvested power to recharge its battery, thereby achieving significant

savings in electricity bill. When conditions allow, the system regenerates

energy from the accent and descent of the elevator car. This regenerated

energy goes right back into the battery, ready for the next run. The battery,

made of 97 percent recycled materials, is itself 90 percent recyclable. With a

power supply contract of only 0.5kW, less than a microwave oven, substantial

savings can be achieved in both the cost of installation and overall power

consumption.

Safety in the event of a power failure

As the system is powered directly from the battery, should the building

power fail, the system will not be affected and will continue to operate normally

for up to 100 trips. Passengers using the elevator would not even realize the

building power has failed. This is especially helpful for elderly, disabled or

reduced mobility users who cannot take the stair, and means that building

power failure would not result in passengers being trapped in the elevator.

Depending on the car load, travel direction and travel length, speed varies

from 0.63m/s to 1m/s to limit energy consumption without limiting passenger

comfort.

The product’s other features include a compact gearless machine that

takes up less space; LED lighting advanced sleep mode. Instead of traditional

hoist ropes, the system uses Otis’ patented Coat Steel Belt technology, which

require no lubrication and are far more durable than traditional hoist ropes.

Even the controller is small enough to mount in the hoistway, which means

there is no need for a machine room which, in turn, means more rentable

building space.

Energy-saving floodlight

Lighting – fixtures: Ominus Lighting

technologies@15

Floodlights are broad-beamed, high-intensity artificial lights used to

illuminate a large area such as an outdoor playing field and theatre stage. The

most common types of floodlights are metal halide, sodium vapor and high-

intensity discharge (HID) lamps. In recent years, however, new technology

developments have made LEDs bright enough to be used for illumination

purposes on large areas. Compared with other types of floodlights, LEDs use

less energy and release less heat.

Ominus Lighting’s surface-mounted Brilliant floodlight applies Philips

Fortimo LED module. It is environmentally-friendly, easily replaceable, and

radiation- and UV-free. Featuring a low maintenance ratio and consistent

light output, it also delivers high lumen outputs of 6,000lm, 12,000lm and

24,000lm; colour temperatures of 3,000k, 4,000k and 5,000k; and colour

rendering index (CRI) of 70-80 Ra. Despite its high lumen output, Brilliant

uses 70 percent less energy than traditional HID floodlights (rated by

Energy Savers as being 75 to 90 percent more efficient than incandescent

floodlights).

Moreover, it needs no maintenance with its energy-saving and durable

features, ensuring consistent light emission with a 120-degree beam angle. It

can be used in area lighting, façade lighting, sports lighting, and advertising

billboard lighting. Its certifications include CE, CCC, IP65 and RoHS.

Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) are surface light sources, rather

than spotlights. Just a mere 1.8 mm thick, OLEDs diffuse a warm, pleasant

and homogeneous light over its entire surface. They are composed of ultra

thin layers of organic semiconductors and colour molecules, which are

embedded between two layers of glass. When a voltage is applied, the

organic layers light up.

Surface light sources versus spotlights

Unlike LEDs and other common light sources, OLEDs diffuse their light

from the source right across the entire surface, hence the term ‘surface light

sources’. Light from OLEDs is characterised by a natural softness, which

diffuses ‘nicely’ and is not dazzling. Due to their extreme flatness, OLEDs

can be integrated into many different surfaces and products and allow light

sources to be designed in a wide range of shapes and sizes. They can be

fully dimmed right across the spectrum—less electricity means less light,

more electricity makes it brighter. No sophisticated electronics are required—

just standard potentiometers will do. OLEDs are available in numerous

colours. Alongside standard shapes, companies such as Philips also provide

sophisticated shapes as well as structural OLEDs.

Energy efficiency

In terms of energy efficiency, organic light diodes are far more advanced

than the usual lighting systems. Not only because manufacturing organic

OLED – raising lighting to a new level

components require less energy as compared to non-organic components,

but also because OLEDs are cold light sources and require less electricity

due to their special technology. OLEDs are quick and efficient at converting

electrical energy into light, without becoming warm themselves. In fact, they

do not get any warmer than 30 degrees Celsius. As a result, they can be

integrated into materials that never used to be associated with light sources,

such as straw or paper, for example.

Philips leads the way

Philips is leading the way for future developments within this market.

Alongside the traditional uses of standard lighting, OLEDs provide additional

ways in which structural lighting (signage) and special lighting can be used.

With products such as the LivingShapes interactive wall, the new light source

has already found its way into places such as bars, restaurants, lounges and

shops.

Lumiblade

Philips has consolidated the OLED technology under the brand name

Lumiblade. This innovative light source was researched, developed and

manufactured at the Philips site in Aachen. It now boasts an efficiency of 45

lumen per watt and a lifespan of 15,000 hours; a normal bulb has a lifespan

of about 1,500 hours. Lumiblade OLEDs are already used in numerous light

installations and lamps and by a variety of manufacturers. Distinctive features

of the Philips Lumiblade OLEDs are their extreme flatness, their pleasant,

surface-covering diffused light and the high quality of their light. As a material

that can illuminate, OLEDs can be exceptionally well integrated and, as such,

will in future facilitate new and interesting lighting solutions that go far beyond

the lighting applications we are currently familiar with.

LED lamps provide warm white light similar to traditional ones. However,

unlike traditional lights, they consume up to 80 percent less energy and

have a much longer lifespan.

Philips has streamlined its range of LED bulbs to make converting from

incandescent bulbs to energy-saving LEDs in homes easier. It has reduced

the number of products from 50 to 20, each with clear on-pack labelling

showing equivalent wattages and fittings, enabling consumers to select the

right LED bulb according to their needs. Made with high quality materials,

the bulbs are shaped like incandescent ones with similar fittings, making

them simple to install in luminaries.

75W replacement bulb

As an industry leader in LED lighting solutions, Philips released Europe’s

first 75W replacement LED bulb, based on its 60W replacement LED bulb

which won the L-Prize from the United States Department of Energy. With

1,050 lumens, the LED replacement for the 75W bulb consumes only 17

watts, which means one can save on energy and energy costs and still

get a quality warm white light. With a screw cap fitting and shaped like

an incandescent bulb, the new 75W replacement LED marks an important

milestone in the field of LED lighting.

Six innovation concepts exemplify Philips’ vision for lighting in the next

decade—flexibility, controllability, alternative energy, connectivity, dynamism,

and materials integration. With these concepts, lighting can be seamlessly

integrated into novel technologies, allowing them to deliver in both form and

function.

Alternative energy

Light is a basic necessity, but there are many off-grid areas in the

Philippines that have limited access to power. This raises the need for cost-

efficient alternative lighting solutions for budget-conscious communities.

The solar-powered LED lighting systems from Philips store energy from

the sun during daytime, so that they are able to provide illumination at night.

They feature higher efficiency compared with conventional lighting. These

modules are commonly used in open areas including streets, roads, and

soccer fields.

Innovative lighting concepts for LED and control systems

Lighting – LED: Philips Electronics & Lighting, Inc.

Connectivity

Hue is a smart lighting system which can be controlled by a smartphone

or tablet to have varying colours and intensities. It operates with an Internet

service provider and can connect to the world in new ways. Each Hue bulb

uses 80 percent less power than a traditional light bulb, and covers all

shades of white (from warm to cool white light) and a wide variety of colours.

Controllability

Under controllability is a technology called Antumbra. Engineered for

high-end residential and hospitality buildings, this light switch series greets

guests by automatically ‘waking up’ with a wall-washing lighting effect.

Antumbra pairs versatile functionality with a contemporary design

aesthetic. Two styles of wall switches and dimmers are offered with individually

configurable buttons while multiple hidden sensory inputs automatically

control the local environment. Hidden indicators light up the wall when a user

approaches, and fade as the user leaves. An internal light level sensor adjusts

the effect to the appropriate illumination level. A built-in temperature sensor

allows room-based integration with building energy management and HVAC

systems. Frame finishes include white plastic, magnesium-coloured plastic,

chrome, and aluminium, with buttons in white, magnesium, and silver.

Dynamism

Under the concept of dynamism is Color Kinetics (CK) which uses

multiple product solutions and advanced digital control technology to deliver

dazzling light installations. These installations are used in over 34,000 iconic

architectures around the world—including England’s London Eye and New

York’s Empire State Building.

36

technologies@15

Materials integration

LED lighting systems can also be integrated with superior sound

absorption to enhance room interiors to create the ideal setting for the

workplace where concentration and communication can take place. The

Soundlight Comfort Ceiling (SLCC) combines comfortable LED lighting with

sound deadening technology to orchestrate the perfect work space, as it

exudes comfort and performance. It creates the sound absorption needed

to support speech clarity over short distances, whilst reducing the total

distance over which sound travels. By shortening the sound propagation

in this way, different working groups are less likely to be disturbed by each

other. Less vocal effort is needed, directional hearing increases, and it’s

easier to concentrate.

The Luminous Textile Panels (LTP), on the other hand, instantly bring

drab spaces to life with a rich combination of multi-coloured LED modules

within acoustic textile panels that soften sound, setting the suitable tone for

hallways and meeting areas.

The six innovation concepts are aimed to create lighting solutions that

offer beyond ordinary functionality. All products ensure energy efficiency and

sustainability while also featuring creative designs.

Flexibility

Under the concept of flexibility lies the OLED (organic light-emitting

diodes) technology. OLEDs are surface light sources—like wallpaper,

ceilings, and windows—that shine brightly with daylight even when it is dark.

These glare-free lights have glass plate assemblies that can be seamlessly

integrated into installations.

The LivingShapes interactive mirror, for example, uses dozens of

Lumiblade OLEDS that emit light when it is turned on and appear as mirrors

when turned off. Likewise, LivingSculptures let designers orchestrate three-

dimensional arrays of OLED in open spaces like ceilings and walls—adding a

sense of movement to any surface, as multiple light panels rhythmically move

and illuminate to create interactive displays.

While many may feel that global warming is a problem beyond control,

there is one relatively easy and cheap way to offset climate change—paint

roofs and walls white to bounce sunlight back to the atmosphere. The science

behind it is simple—white reflects the sun’s rays more than dark colours do,

thus offsetting a portion of the warming effect from greenhouse gas emissions.

A white coating on the roof or wall therefore acts as an anti-warming device

to cool interiors, reducing or eliminating the need to use air conditioning that

would otherwise emit tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

White paint seems like an eco-friendlier choice than dark paint. However,

white is not always an option, as dark shades are often desired or even required

by clients. In fact, contemporary exterior colour trends use many medium and

dark tones. To address this problem, modern paints are infused with infrared-

reflecting (IR) pigments to produce what is called ‘cool coating’. This pigment

technology reduces heat build-up via albedo effect, or the reflection of light

and heat to keep indoor heat to a minimum. This makes it possible to create

greens, blues and other dark shades of coating that reflect infrared light and

reduce heat build-up.

Boysen’s Cool Shades is a line of heat-reflective coloured roof coatings

which are water-based and have low VOC (volatile organic compounds). It

utilises the technology IR pigments that repel infrared light before it turns into

heat. Independent tests have shown that Cool Shades reflects 21 percent

more infrared light than ordinary roof coatings. Depending upon colour and

location, ceiling and wall cavity temperatures can be reduced by as much as

35 degrees.

The ability of IR pigments to reflect infrared light is affected by how long

the paint film stays clean. To maintain high solar reflectance over time, Cool

Shades is designed with an all-acrylic binder to keep the film durable and highly

dirt-resistant.

use in wet areas, including residential showers and tub surrounds. They are

also resistant to denting, breaking and puncturing—even in high-traffic areas.

The panels are code approved for use in non-combustible construction. In

addition, they feature high levels of surface burning characteristics (ASTM

E84, Flame Spread 5, Smoke Developed 0) and fire resistance (ASTM E119).

The 5/8” Fiberock Aqua-tough interior panels, AR may be used in lieu of Type

X gypsum panels in over 50 fire-rated wall assemblies as listed in the UL Fire

Resistance Directory under Type FRX-G.

QuietWall acoustic system

Prolonged exposure to noisy environments may create anxiety and stress

for building occupants, especially those in offices, hospitals, classrooms,

and hotels. A minimum STC of 50 is generally recommended to achieve

an environment which generates better productivity and comfort for the

occupants. QuietWall acoustic system is a cost-effective partition system that

delivers high levels of acoustic performance using standard drywall installation

methods. The system consists of Rondo QuietStud (patent-pending),

SoundBlock insulation batt, and a combination of standard and fire rated

plasterboard to form an effective buffer against unwanted noise. Its improved

acoustical performance saves cost by using fewer plasterboard layers which

translates to slimmer partitions on site, thus maximising usable room space.

About the company

USG Boral is one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of

plasterboard-based wall, ceiling lining systems and accessories in Asia,

Australasia and the Middle East.

Plasterboard is a lining material for walls and ceilings. It consists of a

gypsum plaster core that is encased in a heavy-duty paper liner, which wraps

around the long edges of the sheet. It is available in many types and sheet

sizes to suit a variety of applications.

Impactstop

This fire-, water- and impact-resistant lightweight plasterboard is

specifically designed for interior wall linings. It is utilised in the Boral ImpactWall

system which complies with the impact performance requirements (BS 5234)

of internal walls. The salient points of this standard include wall stiffness,

high-performance acoustics, small hard body impact, large soft body impact,

and lightweight and heavyweight anchorage.

Firestop

This interior lining fire protection is simple to install and is able to prevent

the spread of fire from 30 minutes up to four hours, depending on the system

applied. It is ideal for lining walls, ceilings, beams, and columns in residential

and commercial construction. The application of Firestop in single and

multiple layers provides a variety of fire rated and acoustical performances.

Two variants are available in 12.5- and 16-millimetre thickness.

and Development Agency Kimpraswil. All products have met Indonesia’s

standards on earthquake engineering and construction, demonstrating that

they are not only strong and practical, but safe as well.

One of the system’s key features is incorporating ZAM technology (from

Nisshin Steel Co. Ltd in Japan), a highly corrosion-resistant hot-dip coated

steel sheet that has a layer of zinc, aluminium and magnesium. These three

elements produce a steel material quality that is highly resistant to corrosion,

ammonia, acid and alkali. Corrosion test results have found that ZAM can last

for at least 60 years. In addition, the surface is harder than other lightweight

steel coatings, making it scratch-resistant.

Prefab house

Aside from frameworks, the system is also suitable for prefabricated

houses. The advantages of prefabricated houses are that they are resistant

to earthquakes and respond well to topographic land conditions that are not

flat. The structure is fully integrated, from the footing to the base, and has a

closed roof. Other building materials can be combined to create a variety of

construction models and designs. Manufactured and packed in modules, the

JSteel framing system is easy to transport and install—a good solution for the

fast development and high-quality construction in Indonesia.

About the company

Established in 1977, PT. Jaindo Metal Industries is an innovator of a

variety of high-quality steel products for the building construction industry. It

has obtained the quality management certificate ISO 9001: 2008 in February

2009.

Lightweight steel framing systems are easier to install and maintain than

wood due to their lighter load and durable structure. Unlike wood, lightweight

steel eliminates problems such as corrosion, termites and shrinkage. Steel is

also cheaper than wood, because of its wide availability.

Innovation

The JSteel framing systems consist of a variety of forms and profiles

which are used for roof construction and frameworks, such as trusses, ceiling

frames, wall frames, door and window frames, and floor frames. They have

been tested and approved by the Structure Laboratory of Bandung Institute

of Technology (ITB), Center for Research and Development of Settlement

(Puskim), Ministry of Settlement and Regional Infrastructure, and Research

carbon emissions a year—equivalent to 5 percent of global carbon dioxide

emissions. Given its high emissions and critical importance to society,

cement is an obvious place to look to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Ground granulated blast furnace slag

The use of Green cement as a replacement with lower environmental

burdens offers opportunities for significant reductions in energy use and

carbon dioxide emissions. One of the effective alternatives to Portland

cement is ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), a sustainable

building material made from a by-product of iron production. GGBS is a

Green cement alternative which replaces 50 percent of Portland cement in

concrete mix. Greater proportions of up to 70 or even 80 percent can be

used with advantage in suitable situations.

Key advantages of GGBS in concrete:

• Savesenergy(requiresnearlythree-fourthlessenergy)

• Reducesemissionsofcarbondioxide(cutmorethan90percent)

• Conservesnaturalresources

When GGBS is single-blended, the principle of equivalent amount

replacement could be followed. The following methods can be used to

determine the appropriate replacement ratio of GGBS:

• Foron-the-groundconcretestructureswithhigherearly-agestrength

requirement, replacement ratio should be 20 to 30 percent;

• For underground concrete structures with average strength

requirement, the replacement ratio should be 30 to 50 percent;

• For mass concreate or concrete structures with strict temperature

rise equipment, the replacement ratio should be 50 to 65 percent;

• Forspecialtyconcretestructureswithhigherrequirementondurability

(e.g. corrosion resistance marine structures, sewerage treatment

plants, etc.), the replacement ratio should be 50 to 70 percent.

There are situations where users should consider a higher GGBS

replacement ratio. Some of them are in mass concrete with strict temperature

control requirement (e.g., mega basement or sub-structural works and

tunnels); corrosion-resistant concrete structures which are exposed to

rigorous conditions (e.g., marine structures, sewerage treatment plant);

concrete structures in acidic or alkaline area, and in areas with potential

alkali-aggregatereaction;andself-compactingconcrete(SCC).

The construction sector has become one of the latest industries to

the manufacture and delivery of the building materials, and the activities of

a multitude of contractors.

that allocates ecopoints to different products or materials—the more

ecopoints, the larger the impact on the environment. Under this method,

GGBS scored 0.47 ecopoints, while Portland cement scores 4.6 ecopoints.

This classifies GGBS as having only one tenth of the environmental impact

of Portland cement.

Solar panels are used as a component of a larger photovoltaic system to

generate and supply electricity in commercial and residential applications. The

efficiency of a module determines the area of a module given the same rated

output.

HIT (heterojunction with intrinsic thin layer) double solar panels are bifacial,

which means that they can generate electricity from both sides of the panels. It

employs a technology in which hybrid solar cells composed of single crystalline

silicon wafers are surrounded by ultra-thin amorphous silicon layers. In double

solar panels, the solar cells are sandwiched between strengthened glass,

allowing electricity to be generated not only from the front face through direct

sunlight, but also from the underside, through indirect reflected light, giving the

solar panel a high power generation capacity.

The panel potentially enables up to 30 percent* higher power generation

(kWh) compared to power generation from a single-sided HIT solar panel

installed and subject to the same conditions. Every square metre of space

is utilised to its highest capacity, generating more power for a given amount

of space. HIT solar cells also perform more efficiently at high temperatures

compared to conventional solar panels. This means that more power is

generated throughout the day as the temperatures rise and fall.

With a double glass structure that allows brilliant light and shadows to shine

through the panels, the solar cells appear to be floating in the air. The panels

can be used for a wide variety of applications, such as awnings, canopies for

car parks, trellises, skylights or building façades.

formed slabs feature a natural texture and feel, and come in a standard size of

2,550mm (L) x 600mm (W) x 50mm (BH). To install, jigsaw is used to cut the

excess of the slab and hole for the sink or cooktop; hole saw, on the other hand,

is used to bore a hole for the faucet. Other than those two industrial tools, basic

construction equipment and materials such as steel tape, L-square, adhesive

and sealant are needed to set up a single countertop.

Touch and eco-friendly

Solflex Superior features high temperature resistance, which allows it to

withstand up to 150 degrees Celsius. It does not get damaged easily compared

to other similar products that quickly distorts, cracks or softens when exposed

to high heat. It is also made with an eco-friendly organic PVA fibre material that

emits very little to no VOC.

Mass production

Commercial structures such as condominiums and hotels can also greatly

benefit from Solflex Superior. The pre-formed slabs, including already attached

backsplash and skirting, can be mass-produced to fit the standard sizes of

most buildings’ vanity tops and countertops. This means multiple countertop

installations can be done quickly without compromising quality, function and

aesthetic.

About the company

S.E.A. Olympus Marketing, Inc. is a distributor of high-quality raw

materials and construction brands such as Polyklear Composites, Sunshield

Polycarbonate Sheets, Ecofoam Polyurethane Foam, and Solflex Solid Surface

in the Philippines. The company is also a distributor of industrial equipment

from some of the biggest brands including Titan, Graco, Prona, SP Air, and

Kaeser Kompressoren.

Solid surface materials are a popular choice for kitchen countertops, sink

tops and vanity tops. This durable, non-porous material is highly resistant to

heat, stains, mould, and bacteria. However, one downside of solid surfaces is

that they are difficult, if not impossible, for do-it-yourself (DIY) home remodellers

to fabricate. Would not it be wonderful if a homeowner can install a brand

new solid surface countertop without special tools and expertise? That is major

savings on labour cost.

Easy installation

Solflex Superior was created for hands-on homeowners who are renovating

the kitchen or building a new one. What sets it apart from other solid surface

materials is its ability to let regular people install highly-durable kitchen

countertop on their own and mostly only within an hour.

Created through a specialised compression casting process, Solflex

Superior produces pre-formed solid surface slabs that have 200 percent more

Plain painted walls are a standard feature in most homes and buildings. To

add vibrance and personality to a room, plain walls are used as blank canvases

for much more interesting designs and styles achievable with wallpapers and

decorative panels.

Wallpapers

Wallpapers are a helpful tool to create or change the ambience of a room.

A simple difference in texture of the material can give an entirely different feel.

It is important to be able to get the look that one desires through the use of

customisable wallpaper designs. From the material to the graphics, there are

a lot of palettes, patterns and materials to choose from Brushstroke Creative’s

collection of wallpapers.

Smooth wallpapers are the most commonly used wallpaper today. It is

available from gloss to matte finish. On the other hand, linen wallpapers consist

of lines that resemble those of linen cloth. Stucco wallpaper is characterised

by its rough texture which is similar to that of a stone. Organic wallpapers are

textured covers that resemble woven fabric, corkwood, and grass linen.

All these wallpapers require a flat wall surface to achieve an even finish

when installed. Eco-friendly ink is used to create the wallpaper’s graphic prints.

Decorative panels and other cutting solutions

These decorative panels are usually made of medium density fibre (MDF)

board, marine plywood, plyboard, sintra board, aluminium composite panel,

acrylic, of other flat rigid materials. They are typically used for office, hotel,

restaurant and home for both indoor and outdoor applications, depending on

the material to be used. For indoor applications, decorative panels are used as

dividers and wall accents for residential and commercial spaces. The cutting

equipment from Brushstroke Creatives utilises the same materials used for

signages, room numbers and other indoor/outdoor applications. LED lights

can also be incorporated for a more attractive and effective solution.

A revolution is taking place in new building technology around the world.

The Green building industry has rapidly grown in recent years, along with

increasing demand for environmentally responsible and healthy places to work

and live in.

As the market leader in waterborne finishes, Bona’s aim is to develop

environmentally sound products of the highest quality in order to bring out the

best in wooden floors. Through continued research the company develops

wooden floor treatments which focus on design and performance. With the

belief that a good design solution is not just about appearance but also about

functionality, Bona takes into account factors such as durability, gloss, shade,

friction and slip resistance when coming up with its coatings.

Waterborne finishes

Bona’s waterborne finishes are durable, fast drying, clear in colour, almost

odourless, and most importantly environmentally adapted. As the finish dries,

water evaporates into the air leaving the protective polyurethane coating on

the wood. This means low VOC emissions and no toxic fumes, minimising the

health risk to contractors and homeowners.

In 2007 Bona received the Singapore Green Label for the waterborne

finishes Bona Prime Classic, Bona Novia, Bona Mega, Bona Traffic and Bona

Naturale as well as for the Bona wooden floor cleaners.

Silane-based adhesive

Bona’s innovative silane-based reactive adhesives can be used for all

types of wooden floors. They are also especially suitable for sensitive wooden

floors as they don’t contain water or organic solvents. In 2009 Bona received

the Singapore Green Label for Bona R848 and R850 silane-based adhesives.

Dust-free sanding

It is also important to consider the effects of products on indoor air quality.

Sanding wooden floors has always been associated with lots of dust. Bona’s

patented technology to vacuum up wood dust during floor sanding has been

developed to meet high health and environmental standards. Measurements

show that Bona’s dust-free sanders contribute to better and cleaner air quality

than found in the room before sanding.

Pioneer

Bona pioneered waterborne floor finishing technologies in the 1970s. The

company has a tradition of commitment to personal health, indoor air quality

and the environment, and has led the development of lowering VOCs in finishes,

while maintaining industry-leading performance standards. Bona’s innovations

over the years have resulted in the highest quality and most environmentally

responsible floor finishing processes. With a complete system of products

for installation, maintenance and renovation of wooden floors, Bona offers its

customers lifetime support.
