6.1.0 Foreign Literature

6.1.1 Harvard Connection

Harvard Connection was a social networking website launched on May 21,

2004 that was founded by Harvard students Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss,

and Divya Narendra in December 2002.Users could add people as friends, send them

messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves. Users

were placed in networks based upon the domain name associated with the email

address they used for registration. In December 2002, Harvard students and

friends Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra wanted a better

way to connect with fellow students at Harvard and other universities. As a result, the

three conceived of asocial network for Harvard students named Harvard

Connection, which was to expand to other schools around the country. In January 2003,

they enlisted the help of fellow Harvard student, programmerand friend Sanjay

Mavinkurve to begin building Harvard Connection. Sanjay commenced work on Harvard

Connection but left the project in the spring of 2003 when he graduated and went to

work forGoogle. After the departure of Sanjay Mavinkurve, the Winklevosses and

Narendra approached Narendras friend, Harvard student and programmerVictor Gao

to work on Harvard Connection. Gao, a senior in Mather House, had opted not to

become a full partner in the venture, instead agreeing to be paid in a work for

hire capacity on a rolling basis. He was paid $400 for his work on the website code

during the second half of 2003, then excused himself thereafter due to personal

obligations.

6.1.2 Twitter

Launched in 2006, the social media web application known as Twitter has grown by

leaps and bounds. By answering the question What are you doing? in 140 characters

or less, users are doing just that and microblogging their thoughts, musings, images,

links, news, and more to the open audience that is the Internet (7 Things, 2007). To get

a better handle on Twitter and the phenomenon it has created we need to understand

social media a bit more. Once that is done we can take a look at how instant messaging

set some of the ground work for Twitter before delving into what Twitter is and why

understanding it is important. Social networking is not a new concept. Coyle and

Vaughn (2008) tell us that a social network at its core is a set of individuals linked to one

another through interpersonal means--whether it be through computers, locality, ideas,

or similar interests. People by nature are social and find different and unique ways to

connect with one another. In the 21st century its only natural that relationships forged

online can carry similar weight as those relationships that are made offline the old

fashioned way. Coyle and Vaughns (2008) study found that in todays digital age, social

networking is a new form of communication that continues to evolve. It is this evolution

in communication that allows people to connect in new ways. Taylor (2008)

acknowledges that different social networks give us access to our friends in different

ways, ways which differentiate our relationships. Whether it is checking your friends

Facebook page to find out what they did this weekend, getting business referrals on

LinkedIn, getting the latest news updates in your Twitter feed, or checking out the

pictures on Flickr that your cousin took of her trip to the Grand Canyon, you are

connecting with people in various ways. 2 With social networking use exceeding web

based email use in February 2009 (Wilson, 2009), some of these connections are not

just being made by people. Businesses and organizations are also seeing the value of

connecting with their consumers and other individuals of interest online. Business are

using social networking tools to find new opportunities, expertise, employees, and

information on how customers utilize their products and services (Wilson, 2009). Some

health care organizations have found that social networking gives them a better avenue

to listen and respond to patient needs and allows for richer engagement and deeper

doctor-patient relationships (Hawn, 2009, p. 368). While in educational settings it can

help develop trust and understanding between students and teachers (Kist, 2008) or be

used for more practical purposes like forming learning communities for student

collaboration (Barbour and Plough, 2009). By understanding the ways social

networking allows individuals to be connected with one another, it lays the groundwork

for discovering how Twitter connects people to one another.

Along these same lines and as a prelude to Twitter, instant messaging (IM) shares

many characteristics with the microblogging service. Mostly utilized by students in high

school and college (Quan-Haase, 2008), IM is another waythatpeoplecanstayconnected

online. IM is defined as applications that provide textbased, near-synchronous

communication between two or more users who are usually known to one another

(Quan-Haase, 2008, p. 106). Whether it is through the use of online messaging

software or SMS texts on cell phones it is this near-synchronousness that gives IM a

feel of live conversation. IM has its own place in the communication hierarchy, and in

many cases is considered talking and not writing (Jacobs, 2008).

6.1.3 Facebook

Facebook has a different feel than most websites, even ones that might be considered

similar like dating websites or professional job seeking networks. The entire system is

organized around exploring and engaging other participants. The idea is to help you

access and display as much information about yourself and others as you want and at

the same time pursue connections between the heterogeneous mess of people,

components, and ideas. Facebook is a source of information, place of communication,

and, as is proposed and flushed out later in this paper, a multifaceted arena of identity

performance. It is fundamentally a socio-technical mesh; a blending between human

actors, echoes of abstract individual personalities and social perspectives, and code-

powered, semi-automated visual interfaces. Access is mediated by both cell phones

and computers of all types.Upon logging on visitors are greeted with the impression of

activity by looking at the newsfeed, their latest application updates and the published

shifting statuses of their friends. On some level its almost comparable to the buzz of a

city (Stutzman 2007a) or the front page of a newspaper. One can see some of whats

going on amongst their friends on the site and do things like track specific recent

changes in their friends profiles or upload new media to share with their classmates. A

student might chase down classmates or find that person they ran into on the quad

earlier, or seek the social hub of a campus group theyve just joined. Often all it takes is

an impartial set of information a first name and a major, a year and a club

membership, an email address or AIM handle to find specific people in the system. In

most cases this sharing of media, identities and knowledge is desirable. Students can

keep in touch with family members and distant friends, see pictures of someone they

wish to take out on a date, or download the latest song their buddy many miles away

composed in his bedroom. The process is much easier than it would be to normally

accomplish such tasks without the help of Facebook largely because just about every

venture in social exchange is a function available through the system. Facebook is

notably conducive to one-sided activity and browsing, or stalking as most users refer to

it. Surely most of the aforementioned tasks have run rampant throughout programs and

websites for years prior, but with such high logon rates, deep integration, and the ability

for anyone to conduct them unbeknownst to others as well as in an overt fashion, one

can safely say the intensity has changed.

2.1 Product Description

A revolution in communicating, interacting and involving. Connect is a community portal

developed for the PUP San Pedro faculty members and most especially for the PUP

students, ideally it was designed to act as a social networking site for the said campus.

Connect were equipped with different functions / tools which made a significant

innovation in the way how the population of PUP would share ideas, get connected to

each other and updated to all campus events all the time. Styled and developed using

CSS3, XHTML, Jquery UI, PHP and Comet Programming.

2.8 Labor Requirements

The Site Reliability Operations team manages monitors and maintains Connect

deployed server and network infrastructure. The team also performs software

installation and configuration changes, develops basic systems management scripts,

and manages other projects related to the deployed platform. The efficient, stable and

fast operation of our mission-critical, large-scale infrastructure is crucial to our business.

Team Connect chose only the talented, driven technical professional to join the 24x7

Connect Technical Operations team. The successful candidate must have a good

understanding of distributed computing and solid understanding of networking and UNIX

system concepts. Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and

be able to interact effectively and professionally with internal customers throughout the

country. Ability to rapidly assess, analyze and resolve complicated issues with little

initial information or direction and with varying degrees of ambiguity. An addiction to

working in a super-fast-paced environment and resolving multiple interrupt-driven

priorities simultaneously is a must.

Responsibilities

Effectively respond to tickets, emails, and phone calls made to the Operations group

Escalate events as required by the documented procedures with the proper level of

urgency and follow-through

Generate tickets based on internal requests and alerts follow up on escalated problems

Actively monitor the stability and performance of the Connect infrastructure using key

tools.

Understand and execute standard network commands, functions, and procedures

Requirements:

- Education: Bachelor's Degree in BSCS, BSIT and Computer Engineer or other

related field preferred or equivalent experience

- Overall Experience: at least 3 years of experience in core web development and

networking

- Familiarity with basic UNIX troubleshooting required

- Working knowledge of at least one of the following scripting languages is also

preferred: PHP, CSS, XHTML, XML and Jquery

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills is an advantage

2.9.3 Required Content:

- A template approved by the PUP Administration will be provided to Web Admin.

For the purposes of continuity and uniformity and to ensure that the entire

website is user-friendly, it isrecommended that this template should be used in

all pup web pages.
