A process acquired by Technip

In 1991, Rhône-Poulenc sold its know-how and patent portfolio in phosphoric acid production to the engineering companySpeichim.In 1993, the Speichim process was aquired by Technip, who has constantly improved the process in order to offer the latesttechnology to its licensees. The Speichim process is a leader in licensed processes for the production of phosphoric acid withthe following references:

The Technip process for producing phosphoric acid by dihydrate route wasinvented by the French company Saint Gobain in 1953. It was further developedby the leading French chemical group Rhône-Poulenc through four decades ofexperience in its own units and its numerous licensees plants.

Process developmentThe Diplo process is a new generationprocess aimed at improving crystallisa-tion and yield. Its best application isunground, poor reactivity or low gradephosphate rocks.

The Diplo process is a variation of thestandard Speichim Single Reactor processwhere phosphate rock is attacked in twostages within two reactors connected inseries.

The Diplo process offers an excellentopportunity for revamping with lowinvestment costs and improved performances.

Process descriptionReaction filtration

Phosphate rock reacts with sulfuric acidin a non-compartmented reactor to givephospho-gypsum slurry. A centralagitator ensures high recirculation rateand mixing efficiency in order to obtainhigh yields and optimized crystallization.The heat of reaction is removed by aircooling with very compact surfacecooler-dispersers.

These special devices also limit theformation of foam in the reactors.

Exhaust gases from the reactor arescrubbed with water in a venturiscrubber and one or two cycloniccolumns to remove fluorine compounds.

The off-gas satisfies the most stringentEPA regulations.

Phospho-gypsum slurry is fed to the UCEGO® filter to separate phosacidfrom gypsum.

An efficient washing of the gypsumcake gives maximum P2O5 recovery. Thesimple conception of the filter withfew moving parts allows maximum rota-tion speed and thus highest produc-tion capacities for minimum investmentcosts.

The simplicity of layout and equipmentcoupled with the choice of appropriatematerials leads to high operatingfactors and low maintenance costs.

Concentration

Filter grade acid is concentrated up to50-54% P2O5 by vacuum evaporation

in a forced circulation loop. Acid isheated by LP steam through a graphiteheat exchanger.

Vacuum is obtained by a directcondenser, which avoids the use ofsteam ejectors.

A fluosilicic acid recovery unit can beadded. Vapour from the evaporator isscrubbed in absorbers to recover fluo-silicic acid. High quality recovered F.S.A.is suitable for use in production ofaluminium fluoride or sodium-potas-sium fluosilicates.

Research & developmentToday more than 420 different phos-phate rocks have been tested in theSpeichim pilot unit and more than 1,300phosphoric acid production tests havebeen performed.

The Speichim pilot unit is operated byTechnip to pursue research and deve-lopment, design new units and findsolutions for specific client needs.
